Football Season Is Here!

While the first game for Virginia isn't until Saturday, Sept. 1 (3 p.m. vs. Richmond), football season essentially opens this week for the Cavaliers. Media Day is scheduled for this Friday, and UVa opens practice one week from today on Monday, Aug. 6. Practices on Aug. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 are open practices. Those times are to be determined. Meet the Team Day will be Aug. 19 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

The good news for Sabre fans is that you don't have to wait until Friday or next week to get your season started! Beginning on Wednesday, Aug. 1, TheSabre.com's annual "Hoo Preview" starts a run of 26 consecutive days of preseason football content. A one-month EDGE subscription costs just $5.99, which is cheaper than preseason magazines and you'll receive a minimum of 26 articles on your Hoos for the month. That's less than a quarter per article so make sure you get on board for the month so you know what's going on with your Hoos before the 2012 season begins.

And if you want to be "in the know" all year long, The Sabre EDGE is the place to be. TheSabre.com is the oldest Virginia fan site on the web and we're still the cheapest annual option of any UVa subscription site at just $59.99! Compare that to our competitors and you'll see that we're saving you at least $39.99 a year to follow your Hoos. Plus, you get 10% off from our sponsor UVA Bookstores (some restrictions apply).

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting takes the forefront this week. Here are some topics to follow this week:

  • Former Boston University standout power forward Jake O'Brien plans to make an official visit to UVa on Wednesday. The 6'9" O'Brien is also considering Boston College, Providence and Temple.

O'Brien will have one year of eligibility remaining with whatever school he chooses. He will be a graduate student and therefore is eligible to play this coming season. He played two full seasons and 14 games of his junior year with the Terriers before missing half of his junior year and all of his senior year recovering from a foot injury. He took a redshirt his senior year.

For what it's worth, while making an appearance on the Best Seat in the House, Boston Herald columnist Dan Duggan picked Providence as the favorite in this race. O'Brien visited Providence this past weekend.

  • According to the Los Angeles Times, UVa has extended an offer to class of 2013 point guard London Perrantes. Perrantes, a 6'1", 180-pound rising senior out of Encino, California, reportedly also holds offers from Arizona State, Southern Cal, Washington State and others.

This week, I plan to follow up with Perrantes for the latest on his recruitment and, specifically, his thoughts on the reported Virginia offer. He has visited Charlottesville before according to the L.A. Times piece, which indicates UVa could be one of the favorites here. Virginia currently has one commitment in the class of 2013, from highly touted point guard Devon Hall.

  • Speaking of Hall, I hope to reach the 6'5" Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) standout as well this week. And I hope to catch up with Hall's father, Mark Hall Sr., who is head coach at CHC, for updates on some of his younger players the Cavaliers may be targeting.

  • In case you missed it, UVa has offered Florida rising senior power forward Schuyler Rimmer. I plan to have more with the 6'9" prospect soon, perhaps this week, to discuss where UVa now stands on his list. He plans to take official visits this fall before signing in November, and at last check he had scheduled one official visit already ... to Southern Cal the first weekend in September.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. 2014 LB Reeder Lands UVa Offer
Image: Troy ReederTroy Reeder had never been to the University of Virginia before last weekend, but his first trip to Charlottesville was a successful one. The 6'2", 226-pound rising junior linebacker impressed head coach Mike London and company with his performance during the Cavaliers' one-day camp on July 21. Days later, he received a scholarship offer from the Hoos.

Recruiting News, Notes & Links
Image: Sadiq OlanrewajuIn this latest "News, Notes & Links" feature, I catch up with rising senior offensive tackle Sadiq Olanrewaju to talk about his latest experience at UVa. Also, running back Taquan Mizzell firms up his decision date, and Virginia men's basketball is set to host a potential transfer next week.

Kohles Victorious in First Pro Start

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Former Virginia men's golfer Ben Kohles won the Web.com Tour's Nationwide Children's Hospital Invitational in his first professional start. Kohles beat Luke Guthrie with a birdie on the first playoff hole to take home the event's first-place prize of $144,000. Kohles was one of 12 players invited to the event by virtue of earning All-America honors as a collegiate. Kohles turned pro after finishing his amateur career last week in the Porter Cup.

Kohles made a 22-foot birdie put on the playoff hole to claim the championship. He also made a birdie putt on his final regulation hole to get into the playoff. He shot 1-under 70 during Sunday's final round.

Issue No. 320 - Dec. 3, 2007

Virginia Accepts Gator Bowl Invitation

The Virginia football team accepted an invitation to play in the 2008 Konica Minolta Gator Bowl at Jacksonville Municipal Stadium in Jacksonville, Fla., on Jan. 1. It is UVa's first Jan. 1 bowl game since the 1994 Carquest Bowl following the 1993 season; the Hoos fell to Boston College 31-13 in that game to finish 7-5. Needless to say, there's a lot more at stake this time around - Virginia is looking for its 10th win, something that has happened just once in the history of the program.

Getting to double digits in the victory column will require defeating Texas Tech from the Big 12 Conference. The Red Raiders, who feature an explosive offense, have won four of their last five bowl games. The Gator Bowl is scheduled to kickoff at 1 p.m. and will be televised nationally by CBS.

The Gator Bowl is also a test for Virginia fans, who have improved their travel reputation in recent years. However, the Cavs' only previous trip to the Gator Bowl in 1991 didn't produce a strong fan turnout from UVa. Gator Bowl Association president Rick Catlett believes that will not be the case this time around. He told The (Jacksonville) Times-Union that he received more than 100 e-mails Saturday from Virginia fans encouraging him to pick the Hoos.

"From every indication we've received, Virginia's fans will perform well by buying tickets to the game and traveling to Jacksonville," Catlett told The Times-Union.
