Covington Joins UVa Radio

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia Sports Properties, a division of CBS Collegiate Sports Properties, the multi-media rights partner of the University of Virginia athletics department, announced [Friday] that former Cavalier football player Tony Covington has joined the Virginia Sports Network. Covington will serve as analyst with play-by-play announcer Dave Koehn on Virginia broadcasts during the 2012 football season.

Covington lettered for the Cavaliers from 1987 to 1990. As a junior he was a member of UVa's ACC Championships team that became the first Cavalier squad to be ranked No. 1. He earned second-team All-ACC honors at cornerback as both a junior and senior. Covington started 47 of 49 games during his career and played in the 1987 All-American Bowl, the 1990 Citrus Bowl and the 1991 Sugar Bowl. During his Virginia career he had 194 tackles and six interceptions.

Covington currently resides in Philadelphia where he is the director of the Special Olympics Pennsylvania Philadelphia Chapter.

"I'm extremely excited to once again work with my UVa family. It is truly an honor and a privilege," said Covington. "UVa has and will always be near and dear to my heart and I am thrilled to have the opportunity to work alongside a veteran like Dave Koehn. Coach London and his staff are doing great things with the program and I feel that the future is extremely bright for Cavalier Football."

Covington replaces former UVa player and long-time analyst Frank Quayle, who retired from the booth after 29 years behind the microphone.

"We'll definitely miss that wealth of historical knowledge that Frank brought to the booth, but we're excited about what Tony will bring to our broadcasts," said Dave Koehn, Director of Broadcasting at Virginia Sports Properties and Voice of the Cavaliers. "Tony was a passionate member of the this football program as a player and we're excited to see him bring that same level of enthusiasm and insight to our network."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Virginia football's final one-day camp of 2012 produced a commitment.

Malcolm Cook, a 6'1", 198-pound safety out of Richmond (VA), told TheSabre.com shortly after Saturday's camp that he planned to wait until November before making his college decision. As it turns out, he didn't need nearly that much time, and he pledged to head coach Mike London later on Saturday.

Cook has good size, and on Saturday he showed off his speed, running the 40 in 4.4 seconds and 4.41 seconds. He also looked good in the afternoon one-on-ones. He played well at defensive back and wide receiver, but Virginia is recruiting him as a safety.

"I love the atmosphere at UVa," Cook said immediately following the camp on Saturday. "My mom loves it. The staff is lovely. The players are nice. I've talked to Anthony Harris. The academics are great."

A starter on Armstrong High School's (Richmond) varsity squad each of the past three seasons, Cook is transferring to Fork Union Prep for his senior year. There, he'll play on the prep team along with quarterback Christian Hackenberg.

Cook's commitment gives UVa 16 recruits in its class of 2013.

EDGE Subscribers can read more on Cook and other top performers from this past Saturday in my "Camp Notes" feature linked below. I'll also have more from the camp later this week, including follow-up articles on Virginia class of 2013 offensive line commit Sadiq Olanrewaju, Virginia class of 2012 tight end commit Max Valles, and class of 2014 linebacker prospect Troy Reeder.

Olanrewaju and Valles (who is heading to Fork Union for a postgraduate year) were in Charlottesville on unofficial visits. Reeder participated in camp and was one of the most impressive performers. He is expected to land an offer from the Cavaliers in the coming days, if he hasn't already.

Mizzell Watch

The Gridiron Kings, a national 7-on-7 competition, takes place this coming weekend, and there is a chance Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) rising senior tailback Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell makes his commitment there. Mizzell told TheSabre.com last week that he still planned on making his college announcement on August 21, but he has been considering an earlier decision and has mentioned Gridiron Kings as a possibility.

We'll be sure to monitor the latest on Mizzell's decision. Whenever the elusive 5'10", 185-pound prospect commits, Virginia looks like the clear favorite to land him.

UVa's Latest Commit An Impressive Athlete
Image: Malcolm CookThe University of Virginia's July 21 camp came to an end around 1:30 in the afternoon. At that time, safety prospect Malcolm Cook, fresh off an impressive camp performance, didn't plan on giving head coach Mike London a verbal commitment. Three hours later, the Richmond (VA) native changed his mind and is now the 16th member of Virginia's class of 2013.

UVa's Latest Commit An Impressive Athlete
Image: Sadiq OlanrewajuThe University of Virginia football program held its final one-day camp of 2012 today. In this "News And Notes" feature, I write about a new name (at least to fans) on the class of 2013 recruiting radar, a very promising rising junior linebacker who appears set to land a Virginia offer as a result of his performance today, UVa class of 2013 recruit Sadiq Olanrewaju, and more.

ACC coaches on Penn State sanctions

From the Richmond Times-Dispatch

The best way to describe the reaction from coaches of football teams in the Atlantic Coast Conference to the Penn State penalties from the NCAA is stunned.

"If I'm Bill O'Brien right now, that's got to be devastating news," said University of Virginia coach Mike London this morning.

London and the ACC coaches are here for the ACC Football Kickoff media event.

Today, the NCAA announced the penalties imposed on Penn State in the wake of the cover-up of the Jerry Sandusky child-abuse crimes. Sandusky was a former Penn State assistant coach and defensive coordinator.

...

"I'm the father of seven," London said. "You think about the things that happened to those victims, and it makes you angry and outraged. And there are concerns about the layers it went through without anyone saying anything, and that makes it tough.

"Now, this is probably the fallout for some other things to happen. The trial was a tragedy, and it was terrible to hear all those things. After this reaction (by the NCAA), it's obviously going to continue for quite some time. It's a shock."

Krog Transfers To UVa

Official Release, Virginia Athletic Media Relations

East Carolina women's golfer Lene Krog has transferred to Virginia. She will be a junior for the Cavaliers during the 2007-08 season. While at ECU, she played for new Virginia coach Kim Lewellen.

"I'm excited to have Lene enroll at UVa and be a part of the Cavalier program," Lewellen said. "She will be a great addition to our team, and it also allows her the opportunity to pursue her academic goals. She will be a great representative for a program that is young but has already established itself on a national level."

Krog led East Carolina last year with a 75.69 stroke average and qualified for the NCAA Championships after finishing ninth at the East Regional. Her best round of the season was a 5-under 67 during the final round of play at the East Regional held at LSU. She posted seven top-10 finishes in 10 events for the Pirates and shared medalist honors at the Pinehurst Challenge. Krog ended the season ranked No. 75 in the final Golfweek standings and was a second-team pick to the All-Conference USA squad.
