Remembering The "Doc"

From Mike Ingalls on TheSabre.com's Good Ol Blog

Doctor Frank McCue on the sidelines during a UVa Football game in 2004I'm one of many fortunate people who had gotten to know Dr. Frank "Doc" McCue before he passed away on Sunday at the age of 82. Over the last 30 years I'd either seen him for knee problems or just a casual chat on the practice fields and sidelines. Doc McCue conducted both of my knee surgeries - the first to run some tests and remove torn cartilage in 1983 when I played high school football, and the second to replace my blown ACL in 1992 after a basketball injury at North Grounds.

Thanks to Doc McCue, I was able to complete another four years of military service in the U.S. Air Force Air National Guard. And I can still play sports (basketball, lacrosse and whatever my son encourages me to play). But without his guidance and expertise, I would have been done with a lot of activities at the age of 27. And having a 4-year-old son so late in life (I'm 46 now), I'm thankful that I can still keep up. I owe that to the Doc.

But like many, I'm going to miss Doc McCue for more than just his medical knowledge and expertise. He was a good friend to me and my family, and a friend to anyone who knew him. If you were around him for more than a couple of minutes, it wasn't uncommon to see a number of people walk up to him just to say hello and shake his hand.

And Doc McCue didn't have an impact on just University of Virginia Athletics, he helped improve the lives of so many others in the Charlottesville area and beyond. His reach extended well beyond the borders of the UVa health system, offering assistance to athletes from other high schools and state universities around the state.

Rest in peace, "Doc".

From VirginiaSports.com: Longtime Virginia orthopedic surgeon Dr. Frank C. McCue III passed away Sunday. He was 82 years old. McCue headed up the sports medicine program for the University of Virginia athletic department for more than 40 years. Read the full release here.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

TheSabre.com's Preseason Top 40, a ranking of the top 40 rising seniors in the state of Virginia, was released last week. At this point, UVa has commitments from five of the top 40, including: Varina DB Tim Harris (No. 11), Potomac (Dumfries) DT/OL Donta Wilkins (No. 17), Oscar Smith (Chesapeake) WR Zack Jones (No. 22), Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach) QB Corwin "Turtle" Cutler (No. 28) and St. Christopher's (Richmond) DT/TE Jack English (No. 34).

As one of the favorites for Bayside (Virginia Beach) RB Taquan Mizzell (No. 3) and Liberty (Bealeton) DL Wyatt Teller (No. 6), Virginia is in position to finish strong with in-state recruiting. UVa could well be the current favorite for both players, who are expected to make their college choice before summer's end. The Cavaliers are also in contention with South County (Lorton) LB Oren Burks (No. 25), who is considering double-digit major D1 scholarship offers.

This week, I hope to catch up with Mizzell for the latest on his recruitment and also for thoughts on his experience at The Opening, an invite-only Nike Football event that took place this past weekend. The event featured top class of 2013 prospects from throughout the nation, and the state of Virginia was represented with Mizzell, Derrick Green, Holland Fisher and class of 2014 defensive end Da'Shawn Hand.

Early this week, EDGE subscribers can check out one of our most popular recruiting features, "News, Notes, and Links." This edition features the latest on UVa class of 2012 recruits Max Valles and Tyrell Chavis, who are headed to Fork Union Military Academy this fall. Also, recent Virginia offensive line commit Brad Henson discusses why he chose the Cavaliers and what position he expects to play when he arrives on Grounds for good.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre EDGE recruiting updates since the last SabreMail ...

TheSabre's Preseason In-State Top 40
TheSabre.com's Preseason In-State Top 40 for the class of 2013 is here. This group is deep at the top, with 12 players currently ranked in the 4-star category. The top 10 includes a good mix of offensive and defensive prospects, including three quarterbacks, three linebackers, two running backs and two defensive ends. Topping the list is Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) defensive end Jonathan Allen, a nationally pursued player who committed to Alabama this spring.

Notes From UVa's Elite Camp
Image: Isaac CopelandUVa men's basketball's Elite Camp took place last Saturday and Sunday. The big news obviously was the commitment of Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) point guard Devon Hall, but that wasn't the only news from the event. Before the weekend was over, the Cavaliers had also extended a new offer in the class of 2014. In this "Notes" feature, find out who landed the offer, read an update on UVa class of 2014 commitment B.J. Stith, and check out my thoughts on other promising looking prospects from the Virginia Elite Camp.

Zimmerman And MS Awareness

Ryan Zimmerman, former Cavalier and current Washington National baseball star, puts a lot of time and energy into the ziMS Foundation, the foundation he founded to raise awareness about and money toward finding a cure for Multiple Sclerosis. Last month, Zimmerman hosted the third annual "Night at the Park" at Nationals Park as a fundraiser and raised more than $200,000. Read this recap about the event from ESPNW. The ziMS Foundation also has the seventh Annual Golf & Gala scheduled for November at Hilton Virginia Beach, Oceanfront and Redwing Lake Golf Course. Read more about it or donate here.

A recent Sabre feature caught up with Tom Hagan, who works with Zimmerman, his former UVa teammate, on a "Night at the Park" and other things through the CAA Sports management agency. EDGE subscribers can click here to read "Catching Up With Tom Hagan".

White: Hoos Launch Preparations for Europe Trip

From Jeff Whtie at VirginiaSports.com

On an oppressively hot weekend, members of the UVa men's basketball team spent many of their waking hours inside John Paul Jones Arena.

With temperatures outside hovering near 100, JPJ's air-conditioning units were cranking all weekend. But the Cavaliers were not chilling as head coach Tony Bennett put them through what he called a "three-day minicamp."

The Wahoos practiced once Friday, twice Saturday and once Sunday.

"I loved it," freshman swingman Justin Anderson said Sunday night. "I loved every bit of it. Got to get out there and learn a little bit about the defense, get out there and learn a little bit about the offense, the spacing that we want. I took this weekend as a huge learning weekend, and I think I'm ready."

Your calendar is not wrong. It's early July, and UVa's 2012-13 opener is still more than four months away. But the 'Hoos need to get ready for competition long before that. The team leaves Aug. 6 for a 10-day trip to Europe that will include at least four games.

Under NCAA rules, a Division I team may practice 10 times before a foreign trip. Bennett must work in these practices around the July recruiting period, which begins Wednesday. And so on a scorching weekend when UVa's other athletics venues were all but deserted, bouncing balls echoed inside JPJ.

Dex to coach at UVa

Anthony Poindexter

Anthony Poindexter, a.k.a. Dex, is making his return to UVa football. This time, he'll be on the sidelines as on of Coach Al Groh's graduate assistants.

Dex graduated from UVa in 1998 after a brilliant college career that was suddenly cut short by a nasty knee injury. After battling through an intensive rehab program, Dex found his way onto the field with the NFL's Baltimore Ravens. Dex played two years, primarily on special teams, and earned a Super Bowl ring just two seasons ago.

With his pro career all but over, Dex has elected to try his hand at coaching in order to keep himself in the game. Poindexter's attitude, enthusiasm and knowledge of the game make him a welcomed edition to an already outstanding coaching staff. Welcome back #3.
