White: Ticket Sales Trending Up for Football

Jeff White over at VirginiaSports.com released this article last week about the Virginia football team and ticket sales. The Hoos are moving the season ticket needle in the right direction for coach Mike London's third season.

White wrote: "In 2011, the team's second season under Al Groh's successor, Mike London, Virginia sold 28,693 season tickets. UVa has already surpassed that figure this year. Through Tuesday, 28,785 season tickets had been sold, said Corbin Hunt, UVa's associate athletics director of ticket sales and operations, and that number will grow as the season nears."

In other football news, the following dates have been announced for open practices and Meet the Team Day. The Cavaliers' practices Aug. 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 will be open to the public. The annual Meet the Team Day will be Aug. 19 from 2 to 3:30 p.m. at John Paul Jones Arena.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Top 40 Update

My initial in-state top 40 list will be out this week. The rankings were supposed to be out last week, but they were pushed back by the successful week Virginia enjoyed on the recruiting front.

The Successful Week

Speaking of that, Virginia football started off the week with a commitment from 6'5", 285-pound offensive lineman Jack McDonald. EDGE subscribers can read more on McDonald, who likely will play offensive guard when he arrives in Charlottesville, in an article posted this past Friday.

New Jersey offensive lineman Brad Henson committed to Virginia the very next day, becoming the 15th rising high school senior to pledge to the Hoos. I'll have a full update on Henson later this week, so stay tuned.

Continuing on the O-Line front, I'll have a full article up on Millis (MA) rising junior Jon Baker, a center prospect who showed well at UVa's Big Man Camp on June 16.

Also this week, I plan on checking in with Fork Union postgraduate head coach John Shuman for the latest on his 2012 squad, which is expected to include at least two of Virginia's 2012 signees (TE/DE Max Valles and DL/OL Tyrell Chavis).

Virginia Basketball Elite Camp

The big news from this past weekend's UVa Elite Camp was, without question, the commitment of Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) point guard Devon Hall. The 4-star prospect is Virginia's first commitment in the class of 2013, and point guard is a position the staff really needed to address in a major way. I'll have more from the camp this week, though, including a "News and Notes" piece and an article on 6'8" rising junior forward Isaac Copeland. TheSabre.com learned Sunday night that Virginia offered Copeland following an impressive two days of play at camp.

Jack McDonald's first impression of the University of Virginia was a positive one, thanks in large part to primary recruiter Jim Reid. "Jim Reid, I've known him for a while. He was the first one I met from Virginia," said McDonald, an offensive lineman out of Boston College High (Boston, MA). He is one of 15 rising high school seniors to commit to UVa.

Coveted PG Devon Hall Commits To UVa
Tony Bennett received a big surprise last night, when Cape Henry Collegiate (Virginia Beach, VA) 4-star prospect Devon Hall verbally committed to the University of Virginia. The 6'5", 200-pound Hall, a player the Cavaliers have coveted for quite some time at the point guard position, informed the third year Cavaliers coach of his intentions following Virginia's Elite Basketball Camp.

Class of 2013 football recruiting news has come fast and furious in the month of June. UVa certainly has been in on the action, landing six rising high school seniors in the past two weeks. The Cavaliers have 15 commitments overall now, and spots are limited. In this Strategy Session, I review the most recent developments on the recruiting front and take a look at where the class goes from here.

ACC Spring Tour: Florida State

Coach Jimbo Fisher finished his second season with the Florida State Seminoles by leading them to a win over Notre Dame in the Champs Sports Bowl (18-14). Florida State ended its 2011 season 5-3 in the ACC and 9-4 overall – that’s not terrible but there is always room for improvement. The three ACC losses were to eventual ACC Champion Clemson (35-30), Wake Forest (35-30), and finally Virginia, who snuck by the Seminoles 14-13 for the win.

The Seminoles have several strong players returning to carry on their college careers, though. That includes senior quarterback EJ Manuel. Manuel suffered a fractured fibula during the Seminoles’ bowl game but is said to be in action for spring training. Sophomore quarterback Clint Trickett is also returning.

Mike Scott Selected by the Atlanta Hawks in 2012 NBA Draft

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Former Virginia standout Mike Scott was selected by the Atlanta Hawks in the second round of the 2012 NBA Draft on Thursday night. Scott was the 43rd overall pick of the draft. Scott is the first Virginia player selected in the NBA Draft since Sean Singletary in 2008. Singletary was a second-round selection (42nd overall pick) by the Sacramento Kings that year.

This season, the 6-8 Scott earned third-team All-America honors from Sporting News, Basketball Times and NetScouts Basketball, fourth-team All-America honors from College Sports Madness and honorable mention All-America recognition from The Associated Press.

A 2012 first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference selection, Scott has also earned all-district honors from the U.S. Basketball Writers Association and the National Association of Basketball Coaches.

• Virginia Finishes 15th in Final Directors' Cup Standings: Virginia finished 15th in the final 2011-12 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup competition for Division I schools. The final results were announced Wednesday by the National Association of Directors of Athletics (NACDA). The finish marks the fifth time in the last six years the Cavaliers' program has placed in the top 15. Virginia's best finish came in 2010 when it was third.
• Olympic Trials: Perdue Punches Ticket to London: Virginia swimmer Lauren Perdue punched her ticket to London Thursday with a fourth-place finish in the 200-meter freestyle, officially earning an Olympic bid as a relay member. Also at the Olympic Trials, former Virginia swimmer Matt McLean placed fifth in the 200-meter freestyle, which gives him a likely spot as an alternate on the 2012 Olympic Team, though that announcement will officially be made Monday following the conclusion of the meet.
• Former Cavalier Garcia Places Ninth in Steeplechase at Olympic Trials: In the women's 3,000m steeplechase final at the U.S. Track and Field Olympic Trials, former Cavalier Stephanie Garcia placed ninth in a time of 9:50.74. Garcia was a three-time All-America for the Cavaliers and competed in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2011 IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea.
• Four Cavaliers Named to All-State Golf Team: Four members of the Virginia men's golf team were named to the All-State team by the Virginia State Golf Coaches Association. Senior Ben Kohles and freshman Denny McCarthy were first-team selections while sophomore Ben Rusch and senior Bruce Woodall were second-team picks. Kohles and Woodall placed first and second at the annual Dogwood Invitational held at Druid Hills Golf Club in Atlanta, Ga. recently as well. Kohles took medalist honors at 17-under 271. He had rounds of 70, 69, 65 and 67. Woodall tied for second at 15-under 273. He posted scores of 69, 64, 69 and 71.
• Derek Fisher to Compete in College Home Run Derby on July 3: Virginia's Derek Fisher has been selected to compete in the 2012 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby, set for July 3 at TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha, Neb. The derby is slated for 8:30 p.m. ET on July 3 and will air tape-delayed on CBS at 2 p.m. ET on July 7. He's the first UVa player to participate in the event.
• Bruno, O'Connor Highlight UVa Honors on VaSID All-State Team: Virginia third baseman Stephen Bruno and head coach Brian O'Connor captured top honors on the 2012 University Division All-State Baseball Team, as chosen by the Virginia College Sports Information Directors (VaSID). Bruno was named the state's Player of the Year, while O'Connor earned his seventh Coach of the Year award in the last nine years.
• Somdev Devvarman Selected For 2012 Olympics Singles Field: Former Virginia men's tennis player Somdev Devvarman (Class of 2008) received a wild card entry into the men's singles tournament at the 2012 Olympic Games. Devvarman will represent his home nation of India as one of the 64 players who will compete in the event, held July 30-August 5 in Wimbledon at the All England Lawn Tennis Club.
• Borchelt Named ACC Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year for Second Time: Graduated senior Sarah Borchelt of the Virginia rowing program has been named the Atlantic Coast Conference Rowing Scholar-Athlete of the Year for the second consecutive year, the conference announced Monday. In addition, the conference announced Borchelt, Sarah Cowburn, Martha Kuzzy, Chandler Lally and Hunter Terry have been named to the All-ACC Academic Rowing Team. This is the third consecutive year a Virginia rower has been honored as the Scholar-Athlete of the Year. Jennifer Cromwell earned the award in 2010.

UVa breaks bowl game ticket sales record

The UVa ticket office announced this week that Continental Tire Bowl ticket sales have surpassed any previous UVa bowl tickets sales in the past. That includes all 13 previous bowl contests. UVa has sold over 22,000 tickets through their office since the announcement was made, and they are getting credit for at least 2,500 other tickets sales purchased by UVa fans through other venues. These numbers blow away the previous ticket sales totals of 18,500 for last year's Tire Bowl and the 1998 Peach Bowl.

If you have not yet purchased your bowl tickets, please contact the UVa ticket office today. The UVa ticket office phone numbers are 800-542-8821 and (434) 924-8821. Prices are $27.50 to $67.50 per seat, depending on location.
