Garica At The Olympic Trials

Stephanie Garcia, former Cavalier track champion and a contributing writer at TheSabre.com, competes today (Monday, June 25) at the US Track and Field Olympic Trials in Oregon. Garcia is participating in the 3,000-meter women's steeplechase qualifying round that is scheduled for 7:50 p.m. eastern time. The NBC Sports Network (formerly Versus) is televising portions of the Olympic Trials. Monday's TV schedule calls for a 9 to 11 p.m. window of coverage. Here is a glance at the 3,000-meter women's steeplechase. The steeplechase finals are scheduled for Friday, June 29 at 7:45 p.m. eastern time; the NBC Sports Network will be live on the air from 9 to 11 p.m. that day as well. The top three athletes with the Olympic A Standard will make Team USA for the 2012 Olympics in London.

Garcia shared her most recent Sabre column - read it for free here! - with readers last week and it focuses on the Olympic Trials. That article is part of TheSabre.com's exclusive "Beyond The Lawn" series, which follows three Virginia Cavaliers through a year as a professional athlete. Baseball's Tyler Wilson (Baltimore Orioles), track and field's Stephanie Marie Garcia (U.S. Olympic hopeful), and football's Clint Sintim (New York Giants) continue to share their experiences for a couple more months on the site. Up next is Sintim, who will share his latest column this week.

The Olympic Trials for swimming are also taking place this week and 46 swimmers with UVa ties will compete in Nebraska. NBC and the NBC Sports Network are providing televised coverage of the swimming trials as well. Read more about the Cavaliers headed for the Trials in this VirginiaSports.com release. Virginia coach Mark Bernardino shared some thoughts in that release, including this quote:

"We are awfully excited to bring such a large group of current student-athletes, see so many of our incoming recruits and be part of what our postgraduate athletes are trying to do in Omaha as well. It is going to be a very special Olympic Trials. We have high hopes for several athletes on this team; we think we can be competitive and make a run at being U.S. Olympians."

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

It certainly has been an impressive past two weeks for Virginia football recruiting. Defensive tackle/tight end Jack English, wide receiver Keeon Johnson, defensive tackle/center Donta Wilkins and cornerback Kirk Garner have verbally committed in that span, giving the Cavaliers 13 prospects in total in the class of 2013.

Early this week, I'll reflect on the recent developments on the recruiting front and assess where the staff may go from here with the remaining scholarships available. Space is getting tight, as this Virginia class is only expected to go 20 strong.

Could another commitment be on the way? Virginia is a finalist for rising senior offensive lineman Jack McDonald, a 6'5", 270-pound prospect out of Boston College High in Boston, Massachusetts. Boston College and North Carolina are the other finalists, and a decision is expected early this week (possibly Monday).

UVa held another one-day camp for rising juniors and seniors this past Saturday. I'll be following up with prospects who attended the camp this week, so stay tuned. The big news from the day was the fact that Liberty (Bealeton, VA) rising senior defensive end Wyatt Teller was once again in Charlottesville on an unofficial visit. His interest in Virginia is strong, but he does plan to visit other schools next month. Check out last week's EDGE update on Teller to see what schools he plans to see in July.

Also this week, I'll follow up with class of 2013 linebacker Oren Burks, who is finishing up a 2-day unofficial visit to UVa on Monday. The 6'4", 195-pound South County (Lorton, VA) standout is considering double-digit major scholarship offers, including one from Virginia. This latest trip to Charlottesville is academic-intensive, as Burks had learned much about the football program on a previous visit.

I also plan to check in with class of 2014 wide receiver Jamil Kamara, who took an unofficial visit to UVa last Friday (the same day Garner visited and committed). Kamara, who is entering his first season with Lake Taylor (Norfolk) after two seasons with Princess Anne (Virginia Beach), has around double-digit offers heading into his junior season. UVa has offered.

Finally, by the weekend I'll have up my initial in-state top 40 list for the class of 2013. I'll be breaking down more film this week and will have the list out by Sunday at the latest.

On the basketball front, Virginia will have its Elite Camp this weekend. I plan to cover the event, so check out The Sabre throughout the weekend for any breaking news and updates on the basketball recruiting front.

ACC Spring Tour: Duke

From TheSabre.com's Good Ol Blog

The Duke Blue Devils won a total of three games in their 2011 season, a disappointing outcome to say the least. They were second from the bottom among ACC teams, barely beating out Maryland. Duke’s overall record was 3-9 and 1-7 in the ACC. After five seasons with Duke, coach David Cutcliffe will be looking for an improvement in this 2012 season. The bad news? The Blue Devils dropped Boston College and Tulane from their schedule, meaning two of their wins from 2011 are not on the docket.

The Blue Devils will be returning many of their key players, including team leaders like quarterback Sean Renfree, running backs sophomore Juwan Thompson and junior Desmond Scott, and receiver Connor Vernon.

Teel On ACC Parity And Playoffs

It looks like the FBS level of Division I football is finally adopting a playoff model. The BCS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick reached an agreement on a new four-team playoff format. The proposal must be adopated by the BCS presidential oversight committee, which meets June 26 in Washington, D.C., in order to go into effect for the 2014 season. Read more about it in this Sabre blog post.

So how does that impact the ACC, home of the Hoos? David Teel of The Daily Press penned - well, he probably typed it - a great piece on that very subject. Read it here.

Among other great tidbits, Teel nails it with this statement:

"The last ACC team to enter postseason undefeated, or with one loss, was 10-1 Maryland in 2001. ... That's 10 years for the ACC without an unbeaten, or once-beaten, team entering the bowls. During those 10 seasons, the SEC has had 12 such squads, including Alabama and LSU in 2011. The Big Ten has had 11, with the Pac-12 and Big 12 a tick behind with 10 each. The Big East has had four."

In the most recent edition of The Afternoon Break, we shared an ESPN.com article that quoted ACC commissioner John Swofford on the future of a Division I football playoff system. The BCS commissioners and Notre Dame athletic director Jack Swarbrick have since reached an agreement on a new four-team playoff format. The proposal must be adopated by the BCS presidential oversight committee, which meets June 26 in Washington, D.C., in order to go into effect for the 2014 season.
