USA-Argentina Field Hockey

The University of Virginia hosts a world class field hockey match tonight (Monday, June 18).

The US Olympic Team takes on Argentina at 8 p.m. at UVa's University Hall Turf Field. Admission is free.

Argentina is ranked No. 2 in the world, but the USA defeated Argentina in the final of the Pan Am Games 4-2. Both teams are considered to be medal threats at the upcoming 2012 Olympics in London. Playing at the University Hall Turf Field provides a similar surface to London where the turf will also be blue.

The 16-player US roster includes UVa All-Americans Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese. TheSabre.com's most recent "Afternoon Break" blog post features video of the Pan Am match as well as some links to Vittese articles. Read it here.

Virginia field hockey coach Michele Madison summed up the opportunity to watch the exhibition match in this Jeff White article on VirginiaSports.com.

"It's basically an Olympic preview," she said. "We're paying over $100 a ticket to go see them play in London, and here [fans] can come see them play for free."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Last week was a busy one on the recruiting front. EDGE subscribers, be sure to check out my report from the NBPA Top 100 Camp, which took place in Charlottesville last week. The report includes updates on UVa class of 2013 targets Anthony Barber (PG, Hampton (VA)), Kendal Harris (PG/SG, Richardson (TX) Berkner), Roddy Peters (PG, Suitland (District Heights, MD)), and Jaren Sina (PG, Gladstone (N.J.) Gil St. Bernard's).

Of these point guard targets, only Peters does not have an offer from the Cavaliers. That could change in the coming weeks, particularly if the 6'3" standout attends UVa's Elite Camp later this month and impresses.

Continuing on the point guard front, check out the EDGE for an article on class of 2014 standout Ja'Quan Newton. Newton, a product of Neumann-Goretti (Philadelphia, PA), earned fourth-team all-state honors this past season. Virginia has offered along with many others.

Newton discusses his NBPA Top 100 coach, former UVa standout Roger Mason Jr., recruiting, and more in the update coming out this week.

On the football front, Virginia hosted its annual Big Man Camp/7-on-7 tournament this past Saturday. I posted some news and notes on the EDGE board on Saturday, and this week I plan to have more reports from the camp. The Big Man Camp was headlined by class of 2014 star Andrew Brown. The Indian River (Chesapeake, VA) product is considered one of the top defensive line prospects in the nation in 2014, and I plan to have a full article on him this week.

Also this week, I will have more with UVa's newest commitment, A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.) rising senior wideout Keeon Johnson. The 6'3", 200-pound prospect committed to Virginia over North Carolina and Notre Dame this past Friday, giving the Hoos 11 commits now in the class of 2013.

Work also continues on my initial in-state top 40 list, which will be out next week. All four of UVa's in-state commits will be on the list.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. 3-Star WR Picks Hoos Over Heels, Irish
One week and one day ago, the University of Virginia scored a commitment from state of North Carolina 3-star linebacker LaChaston Smith. Mike London has struck again in the Tar Heel state, this time addressing the offense with a commitment from A.L. Brown (Kannapolis, N.C.) rising senior wide receiver Keeon Johnson.

Reports From The NBPA Top 100
Image: Jaren SinaIt's no secret that point guard is a key need for UVa in class of 2013 recruiting, so that's where our focus was when the NBPA Top 100 Camp came to Charlottesville this week. In this report, check out the latest on Anthony Barber, Kendal Harris, and Jaren Sina, three rising senior points Virginia has offered. Also check out the latest on potential target Roddy Peters and other notes from the NBPA Top 100.

ACC Spring Tour: Clemson

From TheSabre.com's Good Ol Blog

The ACC Champion Clemson Tigers could not have asked for a better conference season in 2011. The Tigers defeated Virginia Tech in the championship game to claim the ACC title they hadn’t held since 1991. Their overall record stood at 10-4 and 6-2 in the ACC, taking their only ACC losses from Georgia Tech and North Carolina State. ...

The Tigers’ 2012 schedule has dropped Troy, Wofford, and North Carolina and picked up Ball State, Furman and Duke. These small changes within the schedule do not include N.C. State and South Carolina, two teams that defeated Clemson a season ago. Arguably two of their toughest opponents again this season, those games fall at the end of the schedule. A good idea or a bad one? Does Coach Swinney have a plan this time to keep the steam in the team, and insure it doesn’t sputter toward the end of the season again? The answers may come from the defense where new Defensive Coordinator Brent Venables steps into the light at Clemson after being at Oklahoma for 13 years. The D, after all, is what struggled so mightily in that bowl game.

Baseball Helps Ease Pain Of Rough 2008-09

The Virginia baseball team eliminated Ole Miss on Sunday in an NCAA Super Regional, earning the first College World Series berth in school history in the process. The Hoos topped the Rebels 5-1 in the third game of the best-of-three series. UVa has won a single-season record 48 games to date.

Brian O'Connor's club is the latest UVa spring team to post impressive numbers and push deep into the postseason. Previously, men's tennis, men's lacrosse, women's rowing, women's and men's golf advanced to the final sites in their respective sports. Considering just how miserable this school year proved to be on the football and men's basketball front, many of the Cavaliers' other sports have performed very well in 2008-09. The Daily Press' David Teel tackled that very topic in his Sunday column - take a look. All told, the Hoos won a conference-leading 6 ACC Championships this school year and they will finish in the top 10 in the Director's Cup standings.

While all of those sports deserve a hat tip for their success, perhaps baseball has eased the pain of football and basketball season more than any other. Why? Because it's all been so unexpected. Many of the other spring sports and teams like Mark Bernardino's swim teams always perform well in the postseason. The baseball team's surprising run to the CWS, on the other hand, is historic. Virginia never had done it before. In fact, O'Connor's Cavaliers never had won an NCAA Regional much less a Super Regional.

It couldn't have come at a better time. Virginia fans, as GunnyHooway said on the EDGE message board, needed this. Before the spring, despite some teams' success, 2008-09 had been a rough season to follow the Hoos. It's so hard to go through a sports year when the two biggest sports struggle after all. Maybe it's a sign of things to come? Maybe like the Gator Bowl loss started a challenging cycle for Cavalier fans, the baseball run will start the path to more prosperous times?

Here's hoping!
