D.A.D's Day 2012

Join Sports Radio 910's Wes McElroy and the Flying Squirrels throughout the month of June for D.A.D.'s Day to raise money for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation.

D.A.D.'s Day was started by Sports Radio 910's Wes McElroy five years ago in honor of his father, Frank, who was diagnosed with diabetes in 1998. Frank is alive and well today and living a healthy lifestyle at 63-years-old, but Wes knows that all sons aren't as lucky as him because others have lost loved ones to this disease.

From June 1-June 15, please join Sports Radio 910 to learn about diabetes, health tips and lifestyle changes to prevent diabetes and in return, raise money and awareness. We invite you to join us at The Diamond on Friday, June 15 as well to donate your $1 towards the fight against diabetes.

Learn more about D.A.D's Day here. Learn more about the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation here. You can donate a dollar online here.

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Mike London and company ran their first one-day camp of 2012. The camp was for rising juniors and seniors, and at least two 2013 class prospects - St. Christopher's (Richmond, VA) DL/TE Jack English and Briar Woods (Ashburn, VA) TE Cam Serigne - expected to learn Monday if Virginia will offer. I'll have updates on both prospects this evening on the EDGE Subscribers Board, so stay tuned.

English scored his first scholarship offer one week ago, when Virginia Tech offered him as a tight end/offensive lineman. Serigne boasts nine offers in total, including one from ACC-rival Wake Forest.

Virginia football also had a big day on the visit front Sunday, when the coaches played host to three top targets in 2013 RB Taquan Mizzell, 2013 DL Wyatt Teller, and 2014 DB Quin Blanding. I hope to have more from all three prospects this week.

Mizzell recently narrowed his list to 10 schools, including Virginia. Teller has not officially narrowed the field, but Virginia and Virginia Tech are the frontrunners. Blanding, a rising junior, just landed an offer from Alabama to give him 21 offers in total.

Basketball recruiting ...

The NBPA Top 100 Camp comes to the John Paul Jones Arena this week, and TheSabre.com will be there for coverage. In case you missed it, a preliminary list of those attending was posted on the Good Ol Blog last week. Some notables as far as Virginia is concerned are: 2013 PG Anthony "Big Cat" Barber, 2013 PG Kendal Harris, 2013 PG Jaren Sina, CG (combo guard) Roddy Peters, 2013 PF/C Austin Nichols and 2014 SF Jalen Lindsey.

Before camp begins, I'll have an update on Peters, a product of Suitland High School in Maryland. Virginia is one of the schools showing strong interest, and if he attends Tony Bennett's Elite Camp later this month, he could well come away with an offer.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre EDGE recruiting updates since the last SabreMail ...

Q&A: 2014 Star Da'Shawn Hand
Image: Da'Shawn HandIn just two years of high school, Woodbridge (VA) defensive end prospect Da'Shawn Hand has accomplished quite a bit. In fact, he has become a serious candidate to be the top prospect in the country in the class of 2014. In this Q&A, Hand discusses his ascent to elite prospect status, recruiting, and more.

Strategy Session: PG Remains Key Need
"We're moving the bar up a little bit in terms of the caliber of player we're bringing in," Tony Bennett told TheSabre Editor Kris Wright in an exclusive EDGE Q&A. The 2012 class, in fact, was Virginia's most highly rated class since Bennett took over as head coach. The Cavaliers will now look to continue their success in 2013 recruiting, which is very much in full swing.

ACC Spring Tour: Boston College

From TheSabre.com's Good Ol Blog

The Boston College Eagles ended their 2011 season on a high note by edging out Miami 24 -17. But mostly that was it in terms of highlights, leaving Boston College with an overall record of 4-8 and a 3-5 record in the ACC. This was not the season coach Frank Spaziani had hoped for.

The Eagles’ 2011 season started slowly as they lost their first three games to Duke, Central Florida and Northwestern. The Eagles found themselves with a victory against Massachusetts, 45-17. They claimed victories over Maryland (28-17) and NC State (14-10) as well as that glorious finish over Miami to get to four wins.

Even though the Eagles seemed to have found their strength and stride at the end of the season, Coach Spaziani was thinking ahead. He took the offseason to re-evaluate not only his team but his coaching staff as well. As many coaches stepped down, Coach Spaziani was ready with a handful of coaches to throw back into his coaching staff.

Teresa Sullivan To Step Down

University of Virginia News Release Courtesy UVA Today

The Board of Visitors and President Teresa A. Sullivan [Saturday] mutually agreed that Sullivan will step down as president of the University of Virginia effective Aug. 15.

Rector Helen E. Dragas said, "We express our deep appreciation to President Sullivan for her effective stewardship of the University. She is a much respected educator, as well as a visible presence in the University community and a prominent voice in higher education."

"It's been a great honor to serve as president of the University of Virginia," Sullivan said. "Although the board and I have a philosophical difference of opinion, I will always treasure having had the opportunity to work with so many gifted faculty and staff, talented students and loyal alumni. I am also grateful for the privilege to have worked with our extraordinary vice presidents and deans."

For the past year, the board has had ongoing discussions about the importance of developing, articulating and acting on a clear and concrete strategic vision. "In a rapidly changing and highly pressurized external environment in both health care and in academia," Dragas said, "we believe that the University needs to remain at the forefront of change."

Beyond The Lawn With Tyler Wilson: My First Spring Training
Image: Beyond The Lawn with Tyler Wilson For four memorable years within the framework of the University of Virginia and its unparalleled baseball program, the misnomer of the 'offseason' was littered with fall ball and Iron Cavalier competitions plus intermittent and taxing midterms and finals. In the current state of my transition from 'offseason' to pitch one, fall ball was replaced with Spring Training, classes were replaced with workouts and social time with ... more workouts.

Cavs Bow Out Of Region
Image: Keith WermanAs an admitted UVa fan, I try to put on an objective hat when covering sports for TheSabre.com but let me say it's difficult to watch my favorite club lose two NCAA Tournament games in the same day - each by a lone run with the tying run in scoring position. Brutal. That's what that is.
