Rowing Wins National Championship

Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The First Varsity Eight won its grand final to clinch the Virginia rowing team its second NCAA Championship Sunday (May 27) on Mercer Lake in West Windsor, N.J. It is UVa's second national championship in three years. The Cavaliers finished with 87 points, while Michigan placed second with 82 points. California was third with 78, just ahead of Princeton, who had 77.

"It feels great," head coach Kevin Sauer said. "I was just thinking, 'Come on you guys, do what you are capable to do.' I told them before the race to remember who they are and what they want and they just went out and did it. They were tight in the beginning and were a little behind, but they were patient and in the second thousand (meters), they were awesome."

Trailing California by three points going into the 1V8 grand final, the Cavaliers held off Michigan and won by nearly a full boat length in 6:18.72. The Wolverines were second in 6:22.09, while USC was third in 6:25.06. It is first time UVa has won the First Varsity Eight title.

"It feels absolutely amazing," sophomore Fiona Schlesinger said. "It sums up all the hours the coaches, the athletes, the trainers and everyone else has put in. We all left our hearts out there on the line. Its incredible and I'm so glad to do it with these girls and all of my best friends."

Virginia, who was seeded first in the First Varsity Eight coming into the regatta, was second to Michigan after 250 meters, but had taken the lead by the 750-meter mark. Halfway through the race, the Cavaliers had a five-seat lead over Michigan and by the finish, were almost leading by open water.

"For the last month or two, we felt we had a shot, but it had to be a team performance," associate head coach Steve Pritzker said. "We knew the Four had to be at the top, we knew the 2V8 had to make the grand final and they did that. I think it's great that even though those two boats didn't win, they can see what a great part they played in this team championship."

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Westside (Houston, TX) cornerback Hipolito Corporan verbally committed to the University of Virginia last Friday, giving the Hoos eight commitments in total in the class of 2013. I caught up with the 6'2", 190-pound prospect for a few comments on Friday, but this week I plan to have much more on the newest Cavalier.

Virginia's 2013 commitment breakdown, position-wise, is as follows: 2 quarterbacks, 2 wide receivers, 1 offensive lineman, 1 linebacker, and 2 defensive backs. Last week's Strategy Session piece focused on the linebacker position, which is one of Virginia's biggest positions of need in 2013. Check out which remaining linebacker prospects the Cavaliers are in the best position to land in that article.

This week, I'll have the latest on the seventh high school junior to commit to Virginia, Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) quarterback Corwin "Turtle" Cutler. In an upcoming News, Notes, and Links feature, Cutler comments on the scholarship offers he received after he committed to Virginia, as well as just how solid he is in his commitment to the Hoos.

The News, Notes, and Links feature will also include the latest from Thomas Dale High School (Chester, VA), specifically rising senior athlete D.J. Reid's visit plans, info on Ponte Vedra (FL) junior tight end Kyle Chung, and more. Virginia has offered both Reid and Chung.

On the basketball front, Sabre Editor Kris Wright plans to caught up with coach Tony Bennett for an article this week. I'll examine the overall 2013 recruiting picture in a basketball Strategy Session. Coach Bennett currently has two scholarships available to use in the 2013 class, and I'll take a look at which prospects/positions the staff is targeting.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre EDGE recruiting updates since the last SabreMail ...

Strategy Session: A Look At Linebackers
In our initial examination of Virginia football's needs in the class of 2013, it was clear that linebacker would be a major focus. The 'Hoos are off to a good start in the linebacker department, but there is work left to be done. This Strategy Session takes a closer look at some of the remaining linebacker targets, and which direction the staff may go with their remaining scholarships.

2014 Report: WR Jamil Kamara
Image: Jamil KamaraJamil Kamara's first scholarship offer came during his freshman year, when he was offered by the University of Virginia. The 6'2", 195-pound wide receiver prospect, now just weeks from finishing up his sophomore year, claims 10 other offers now as well.

Virginia Hosts NCAA Regional

From Virginia and ACC Athletic Media Relations Offical Releases

The NCAA announced that Charlottesville, Va., has been selected as one of 16 regional host sites for the 2012 NCAA Division I Baseball Championship. The four-team, double-elimination tournament will run June 1-4 at UVa's Davenport Field. Two games each will be played Friday (June 1), Saturday (June 2) and Sunday (June 3). If necessary, a single game will be played Monday (June 4).

Florida State (43-15), Miami (36-21), North Carolina (44-14), NC State (39-17) and Virginia (38-17-1) were named as Regional host schools by the NCAA on Sunday, giving the ACC a national-best five Regional hosts. Each of those teams will be seeded No. 1 in their brackets. Georgia Tech (36-24) and Clemson (33-26) are also inthe field. The seven ACC teams in this year’s field rank second nationally and continues a recent trend of strong showings by the conference in NCAA baseball selections. The ACC placed a league-record eight teams in the 2010 NCAA Championship and saw seven teams make the field in 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009 and 2011. This marks the ninth straight year that at least six ACC teams have been selected for NCAA postseason play and the 11th consecutive year that at least five conference teams have been chosen.

The four teams in the Charlottesville Regional are Virginia (38-17-1), Army (41-13), Oklahoma (38-22), and Appalachian State (39-16). UVa faces Army first.

Issue No. 263 - Oct. 16, 2006

Basketball recruiting.

Image: Mike ScottCoach Dave Leitao and company will host 6-8, 215-pound recruit Mike Scott on an official visit this weekend. Scott is a power forward target out of Chesapeake, Virginia. He averaged 25 points and 15 rebounds per game as a senior last season for Deep Creek High School. He originally signed with Temple last fall, but decided to open up his options following the departure of John Chaney from Temple. He is now at Hargrave Military Academy.

Scott, a prospect with outstanding athleticism, is making his first official visit. As reported on The Sabre EDGE last week, he has narrowed his list to four schools - Clemson, N.C. State, Wake Forest and Virginia. No other visits have been set at this point, but stay tuned as I will check up on the situation on Sunday following the trip.

According to a report on Rivals.com, UVa is no longer pursuing small forward Eric Wallace. The 6-6, 210-pound Wallace was once a commitment to UVa, but reneged on his decision recently and decided to re-open his recruitment.

Cavaliers Shut Down Seminoles
Image: Artie Lewicki, Photo Credit-Rob Kinnan/theACC.comGREENSBORO, N.C. - The two teams that met last season for the ACC title faced off again Saturday and while neither team will be taking home conference championship hardware in 2012, the game still had meaning for Virginia and Florida State. The Hoos wanted to erase the taste of a beat down at the hands of Georgia Tech on Friday and the Seminoles hoped to avoid going into the NCAA Tournament on a three-game losing skid. After being swept earlier in the season by FSU, the tournament rematch belonged to UVa as the Cavaliers prevailed 7-0.

GT Blasts Virginia
GREENSBORO, N.C. - Virginia coach Brian O'Connor's assessment of his team's play Friday against Georgia Tech at the ACC Tournament was simple and accurate. "That was just a good, old-fashioned butt-kicking is what it was," he said. The Yellow Jackets won 17-5 in a game that ended via the ACC's mercy rule.

Basketball Notes: Scott's Shot At NBA
Image: Mike ScottVirginia graduate Mike Scott, who starred at forward for the men's basketball team this season, is pulling in interest from numerous NBA teams. Whether that will lead to a spot in the NBA Draft on June 28 remains to be seen. UVa coach Tony Bennett thinks Scott could carve out a role in the NBA thanks to his mid-range jumper. Read about that, Malcolm Brogdon's rehab, and scheduling in this notes article.

Hoos Edge Out Clemson
Starting pitcher Branden Kline grinded out seven innings of work and Branden Cogswell drew a bases loaded walk to plate the go-ahead run as the defending ACC Champions opened the 2012 tournament with a 3-2 win over the Clemson Tigers. The win is Virginia's 13th in its last 15 contests as the Hoos improved to 37-16-1 for the season. The Cavaliers face Georgia Tech on Friday at 11 a.m.

Ingalls: Why TheSabre.com Was Founded And How I Became A Virginia Fan
Image: Yosemite Sam CavalierI'm a Virginia fan, through and through. But I never attended UVa. Students and alumni would call me a 'townie,' and that's just fine by me. I don't need to have graduated from UVa to show my support, and I by now think it's pretty obvious to most that I bleed orange and blue. So 15 years ago I started TheSabre.com as a hobby.

UVa's 2011 Football Season: Fluke Or Foreshadowing?
Coming off the euphoria of Virginia's first winning season and first postseason appearance in three years, thoughts turn to the inevitable question - was 2011 a fluke or a starting trend? Pundits are asking. Virginia fans and opponent fans are asking. Recruits are asking. It's a fair question.

Diamond Scouting Report: ACC Tournament
Image: Coach Brian O'ConnorThe Virginia baseball team completed its 2012 regular season last Saturday by dropping the final game to Maryland 6-5 after winning the series with two earlier wins in College Park. The first win against the Terps ensured that the Hoos would finish second in the Coastal Division of the ACC. The Cavaliers are the No. 4 seed in the ACC Tournament in Greensboro, N.C. and face Clemson on Thursday to open pool play. Here is a brief preview of the Virginia opponents in Pool A in the order the Hoos play them.

ACC Defections? Not Likely Anytime Soon (blog)
In recent weeks a lot of dust has been kicked up regarding expansion efforts of major conferences and how that might affect the ACC. Clemson and Florida State have been mentioned as possible ACC defections. But at various social functions this week, Virginia football coach Mike London and Athletic Director Craig Littlepage have stated to fans and donors that there's no truth to any current ACC member school moving out of the conference anytime soon.

The Afternoon Break - Greer A Captain (blog)
Virginia football coach Mike London announced that senior Steve Greer has been added as a team captain for the upcoming season.

The Afternoon Break - Women's Hoops To Face Minnesota
The Virginia women's basketball team is set to face Minnesota in the 2012 ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The Cavaliers travel to play the Golden Gophers on Thursday, Nov. 29.

The Afternoon Break - Golf Success
It's crowded on UVa's neighborhood block when it comes to spring sports, but one sport that gets overlooked a lot is golf. Both of Virginia's programs have registered successful spring seasons again and are about to enter NCAA Tournament play.
