From The Blog: The Cinderella Ball

New York Giants linebacker Clint Sintim, a Virginia standout and Sabre.com "Beyond The Lawn" contributor, is supporting a great cause in the Washington D.C. area. Here's a message from Clint about the Cinderella Ball:

"Please help support a cause that is very near and dear to my heart. The House Inc. is holding its 7th Annual Cinderella Ball for children of all types of disabilities in Washington D.C on the 3rd of June. Every child deserves an opportunity for normalcy and the ball helps provide this. For more information on the cause and how to donate please go to http://www.acinderellaball.com/#/event-info/. Remember every little bit helps!!!!"

Sintim is taking on the title of Prince Charming on Sunday, June 3 to escort his sister Brittany to the Cinderella Ball at The Willard InterContinental Hotel in Washington D.C. The Cinderella Ball is a prom for students with a disability or lifethreatening illness. Clint's sister, Brittany, is diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), a neuro-development disorder that leads to impaired language, communication and social skills, affecting 1 in 88 American youth, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). The Ball provides a unique and unduplicated opportunity for Washington D.C.'s Capital Area disabled youth, who are often sidelined in social activities, to attend a prom event like none other, including a private dinner, a concert by Grammy Award-winning duo Mary Mary, and a dance.

"This is an outstanding event with a meaningful message," Sintim said in a news release. "I'm honored to be able to escort my sister to A Cinderella Ball. This is a night our family won't soon forget."

Sintim and his sister will join other students and their families as they walk down the red carpet at the Pennsylvania Avenue entrance to The Willard InterContinental Hotel, while forty Marines from Quantico Marine Base form the ceremonial sword arch, welcoming guests to the ball. The Walt Disney Company's Cinderella will be waiting inside to greet each student as they enter the hotel. Once inside, the students and their families will experience Mary Mary in concert.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

  • UVa football scored commitment No. 7 in the class of 2013 last week when Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) quarterback Corwin "Turtle" Cutler came aboard. I caught up with the 6'3", 190-pound junior this past weekend to discuss his commitment as well as the scholarship offers he picked up after pledging to the Hoos. How solid is Turtle in his commitment? Find out this week on the EDGE.
  • I'll also have the latest on Monacan (Midlothian, VA) junior Connor Wingo-Reeves. The 6'3", 220-pound prospect, a star linebacker for the Chiefs, is getting a look from Virginia as a potential defensive end. Wingo-Reeves provides the latest on his recruitment, including what may be on tap for him this summer.
  • I caught up with Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) sophomore wide receiver Jamil Kamara this past weekend as well, and I'll have a full report up on the 6'2", 190-pound prospect this week. UVa was the first school to offer Kamara, who scored the offer from the Cavaliers when he was just a freshman. He has since added 10 other offers and figures to pick up quite a few more before all is said and done. Kamara talks recruiting in an EDGE update coming this week.
  • I'll have football and men's basketball "Strategy Sessions" this week too. The "Strategy Session" is a big-picture recruiting outlook, a detailed projection of the scholarship count and needs in the class of 2013. In these pieces, I'll also list the top targets and where Virginia currently stands with those players.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Matt Thomas Reflects On UVa Visit
Image: Matt ThomasUniversity of Virginia head coach Tony Bennett took the lead role in the recruitment of shooting guard Matt Thomas, obviously a sign of how highly he thinks of the 6'4", 195-pound rising senior. A Monica Wright Update

From WNBA.com and the Minnesota Lynx

Monica Wright's teammates and coaches don't hold back superlatives while describing her ability on the court. Ask coach Cheryl Reeve and she'll use the words elite, athletic and strong. Lindsay Whalen focused on Wright's ability to adjust her game.

Guard Seimone Augustus simply said Wright is built to get to the rim.

"We always laugh about it because she's got some of the biggest shoulders on the team," Augustus said. "She's got that football build, and she uses them well. She turns that corner, and it's like money in the bank."

That's the part of her game Wright has noticeably improved through two preseason games. Once described as a mid-range shooter, she is now beginning to use that athleticism she possesses and take it to the basket. It was a big part of her game on Tuesday, an 82-61 win over the Chicago Sky at the University of Minnesota Sports Pavilion.

And if she continues to bring that ferocity to the court, it could pose big problems for Minnesota's opponents throughout the 2012 campaign.

"She really took to heart some of the things we talked about, being able to get to the rim and finish," Reeve said. "She's my player where when the defense gets intense and really gets pushed up on us, she's so fast and explosive. She can get by you."

Issue No. 108 - Oct. 10, 2003

Virginia sacks North Carolina

Virginia decimated the Tar Heel defense last Saturday to the tune of 515 total yards in a 38-13 blow out. Quarterback Matt Schaub passed for a remarkable 19 of 22 for 284 yards with two touchdowns and no interceptions in only his second game back from a severe shoulder injury suffered against Duke in the home opener. Of Schaub's three incompletions, two were dropped passes and the other was due to a receiver running the wrong pass route. Otherwise, the Heisman Trophy Candidate would have been perfect on the day.

Freshman receiver Fontel Mines broke into the spotlight as well, catching a touchdown on his first ever college reception and snagging two other passes for a total of 45 yards. His touchdown catch makes him the second true freshman receiver this year to have his first collegiate catch go for a touchdown. Deyon Williams did the same against Western Michigan.

Defensively the Cavs found their stride, limiting Carolina to just 58 yards rushing and sacking the normally elusive Darian Durant five times. Linebackers Darryl Blackstock, Ray Mann, Ahmad Brooks and Mark Miller all were in on at least one sack apiece. Cornerback Jamaine Winborne caused a fumble in Carolina's backfield that was recovered by Blackstock.

Diamond Scouting Report: Maryland
Image: Jared KingThe Virginia baseball team came within one out of a home sweep over Georgia Tech this past weekend. But, like the UC Irvine Super Regional game last year, baseball is a game of 27 outs, not 26, and the Hoos lost the finale 5-4 in 10 innings. Now, the Hoos travel to College Park to face the Maryland Terrapins in the final ACC series of the 2012 season beginning on Thursday at 6 p.m. Here is a brief scouting report on the Terps.

Get Your Quarterbacks Here!
With the addition of Alabama transfer Phillip Sims and Virginia’s most recent recruiting commitment, Corwin “Turtle” Cutler, the talk of the town is UVa’s plethora of quarterbacks. Let’s take a look at the resumes of the current group that will practice with the Hoos in 2012.

The Afternoon Break – UVa Among ACC's Revenue Best
USA Today produced an article on College Athletics Finances and while it focuses heavily on Texas in the editorial part of the piece, there is an interactive graphic that details the revenues and expenses at NCAA D-I public schools from 2006-2011. Naturally, Virginia is in that listing.
