Newest Feature

Recently, TheSabre.com began a new feature on The Good Ol Blog called The Afternoon Break. Basically, it's a quick-hitting, link-filled way to take a break from the grind of the afternoon. Here's Friday's Break with results from a recent poll. Looks like some men's tennis fans are out there in Wahoo-land! Make sure you make The Sabre's Good Ol Blog a daily stop on the web.

Sabre poster Hoos in da house asked an interesting question on multiple boards last week. The Afternoon Break turned it into a poll. Here are the results from last Friday's break poll!

Men's tennis garnered the most votes as the UVa spring sports team with the best chance to win the NCAA Championship this spring; 47% of voters picked Brian Boland's Hoos. The rowing team (29%) and the men's lacrosse team (22%) also received more than 20% of the votes. Click on "view results" below to see the full range of votes.

Hoo-Tube Video Of The Day

The Afternoon Break features a daily video and today's video features the U.S. Women's National Team Player Profiles of defenders Amy LePeilbet, Becky Sauerbrunn and Ali Krieger. Sauerbrunn played at Virginia from 2003 to 2007 where she appeared in every game and all but 10 minutes of her college career. She was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year as a senior in 2007.

This Week In Recruiting With Chris Horne

Onalaska (WI) shooting guard Matt Thomas is expected on Grounds for an unofficial visit early this week. This will be the first visit to UVa for the 6'4", 195-pound Thomas, who appears to be one of Virginia's top overall targets in the class of 2013.

Boston College, Iowa State, Marquette, Minnesota, Nebraska, Northwestern, Virginia and Wisconsin are some of the schools that have offered the all-state performer, who averaged 21.3 points, 5.3 rebounds, 2.5 steals and 2.1 assists in 2011/2012. Thomas helped Onalaska to a state championship title this past season.

Iowa State, Virginia and Wisconsin have been the most talked about schools with Thomas, who has not named a clear favorite at this point. Certainly, with this being Thomas' first experience in Charlottesville, the visit is huge for UVa's chances going forward.

Stay tuned, as we'll have the latest with Thomas and his visit experience this week on the EDGE.

Football recruiting ...

On the football recruiting front, I'll continue to hit the class of 2013 recruiting beat but will also take a look at the Commonwealth's class of 2014. The state of Virginia features some of the top talents in the country, including defensive linemen Andrew Brown (Indian River H.S. in Chesapeake), De'Shawn Hand (Woodbridge H.S) and others.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an EDGE subscription, please check out the Sabre EDGE Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an EDGE subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Change Of Plans: Corney Enrolling This Summer
Image: Trent CorneyTrent Corney is arriving on Grounds sooner than expected. The 6'3", 245-pound Thousand Island Secondary School (Brockville, Ontario, Canada) product has signed a Grant-In-Aid agreement with UVa and will enroll in the first week in July, VirginiaSports.com said in a release. Corney, a linebacker recruit, initially planned to attend Fork Union Military Academy (VA) this fall before enrolling at Virginia in January of 2013.

Q&A With Taylor Barnette
Image: Taylor BarnetteA couple of days after Central Florida released Taylor Barnette from the letter of intent he signed back in November, UVa was in contact with the 6'3", 175-pound guard prospect. The Lexington Christian Academy (Lexington, KY) senior ultimately scheduled an official visit, which took place last Thursday and Friday. He left Charlottesville officially a member of UVa's 2012 class. Barnette discusses his decision and more in this "Q&A" feature.

The Virginia men's basketball team will play at Wisconsin on Nov. 28 in the 14th ACC/Big Ten Challenge. The game will be the first meeting between Virginia and Wisconsin in the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and the third meeting overall. The teams split the two previous meetings.

The teams have not met since the 1999 Top of the World Classic in Fairbanks, Alaska, when Wisconsin defeated the Cavaliers 66-56. The only other meeting between the two teams came in the Milwaukee Classic during the 1974-75 season when Virginia won 86-78 in Milwaukee, Wis.

Wisconsin finished the 2011-12 season with an overall record of 26-10 and reached the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament before losing to Syracuse 64-63. UVa was 22-10 last season and lost to Florida in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Virginia defeated Michigan 70-58 at John Paul Jones Arena in last season's ACC/Big Ten Challenge, while Wisconsin lost 60-57 at North Carolina. The Cavaliers have a 7-5 record in the Challenge and Wisconsin is 6-7.

The 2012 ACC/Big Ten Challenge is scheduled for Nov. 27-28 and features 12 games. The other games scheduled on Nov. 28 in addition to the Virginia-Wisconsin game include Ohio State at Duke, Michigan Sate at Miami, Purdue at Clemson, Georgia Tech at Illinois and Boston College at Penn State. Virginia Ready for Final Four Weekend

Michael Culver and the Cavs' defense will try to slow down Syracuse on Saturday.

The Virginia men's lacrosse team has rolled to a 15-0 record this season, but the coaches and players won't be satisfied without two more victories this weekend in the NCAA Tournament's Final Four. UVa faces Syracuse in the semifinals on Saturday, a team it defeated earlier this season, 20-15.

"I would tell you that just in passing, and I've said it over time, we never go into a season thinking about being undefeated. With the schedule we play, we just don't think that that's likely to happen," Virgiia coach Dom Starsia said. "So the fact that it has happened [in the regular season] is memorable. I think that's significant. But I think we're now focused on trying to finish this in the final weekend and then we can all sit back and look at the big picture of this thing."

The Cavaliers have won the men's lacrosse title three times, including their run in 2003. The seniors on this team were freshmen then and they would like to bookend their careers with National Championships.

"You certainly don't come to college and think you're going to play. The fact that I got a chance to play, but also to play on a team that was so talented with great senior leadership and win a National Championship was an unbelievable and indescribable feeling and experience for me. I certainly would like to duplicate that this year," senior Matt Ward said earlier this season.

Virginia and Syracuse face off in the second game Saturday - the start time is slated for 2 p.m.

Hoos Cruise To Sweet 16 Again
Image: Jarmere JenkinsDuring Saturday's NCAA Tournament opener at the Snyder Tennis Center, Virginia's Jarmere Jenkins couldn't find a consistent groove early against Fairleigh Dickinson and the Cavaliers clinched the match before Jenkins locked in fully. He dominated at No. 1 singles with a straight sets win that helped propel the Hoos to a 4-0 victory against VCU.

Knee Rehab Progress
Image: Beyond The Lawn with Clint SintimI just passed the eighth month anniversary since my surgery. I've made a lot of progress but I've still got a good amount of work to be done. I know it sounds like coaches' talk, but every day for me is a better day. I go to my doctor every six weeks and he gives me an update. I actually went to the doctor recently and he gave me some great news concerning my knee.

Diamond Scouting Report: High Point
The Virginia baseball team is coming off a nine-day break for final exams and will face the High Point Panthers on Wednesday night at 6 p.m. at Davenport Field, weather permitting.
