Virginia Wins 6th Straight Tennis Title

Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The second-ranked Virginia men's tennis team won its sixth consecutive ACC Tournament title with a 4-1 win over eighth-ranked Duke in a Sunday's championship match at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center. The match was moved indoors due to rain, but that didn't faze the Cavaliers (24-1) as they defeated the Blue Devils (22-5) in the final for the third consecutive year.

"We played well today and needed to because Duke played a great match today," said head coach Brian Boland. "We have so much respect for Duke and knew we would need to play at a high level to win today. I think we needed a good, competitive match like this to get ready for the NCAA Tournament. Each championship we have won is special. Every year it is a different group of guys and you want to see them be successful as a reward for all their hard work."

The championship was Virginia's eighth overall, all coming in the last nine years. Sunday's win was the Cavaliers' 92nd consecutive victory against ACC competition (regular season and postseason), extending its conference record.

"The success we have had in the ACC shows the consistency we have had as a team," said Drew Courtney, the ACC Tournament MVP. "Winning six straight championships starts from what we do day-in and day-out in practice and that hard work carries over when we take the courts. We are proud to keep the tradition going."

The Cavaliers receive the ACC's automatic berth to next month's NCAA Tournament. The 64-team field will be announced on May 1.

This Week In Recruiting

Basketball Recruiting

  • One week after making an official visit to UVa, South Carolina freshman transfer Anthony Gill was at Ohio State this past weekend on an official visit. The 6'8", 235-pound power forward could have his decision as early as this week, so stay tuned. We hope to have more on Gill's situation early this week.
  • The 2012 Capital Classic took place this past Saturday, with the U.S. All-Stars taking the victory over the Capital All-Stars, 105-93. Virginia-bound recruits Justin Anderson, Evan Nolte and Mike Tobey all played in this all-star event, and we'll have more from all three players.
  • Anderson, a wing out of Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD), finished with 17 points for the Capital All-Stars. Tobey, a 6'11" center out of Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.), had 9 points for the U.S. team. Nolte, a 6'8" forward out of Milton (Alpharetta, GA), chipped in 4 points for the victors. Here's some highlight video courtesy of Sabre TV:
  • The Nike EYBL comes to Hampton this weekend, and TheSabre.com will be there for coverage of UVa's targets. Stay tuned this coming weekend for much more on the basketball recruiting front.

Football Recruiting

UVa played host to Gilman (Baltimore, MD) junior linebacker Micah Kiser this past week. This week, we will have comments from the 6'1", 210-pound prospect, who is one of the Cavaliers' top linebacker targets in the class of 2013. Kiser has double-digit offers in the fold, including Virginia, Florida, Maryland, Oklahoma, Stanford, Virginia Tech and more.

Also this week, I will have another update on Mountain View (Stafford, VA) junior wide receiver/defensive back DaeSean Hamilton. The 6'1", 185-pound prospect made two visits to UVa the week of the Orange/Blue Spring Game, and this past weekend he was in Blacksburg to check out Virginia Tech. Hamilton names no favorites, but both in-state BCS schools are going hard after him.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. No. 1 Virginia Wins 12th ACC Championship

Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

In front of an ACC Rowing Championship record crowd of approximately 1,100 fans, the No. 1 Virginia rowing team came from behind and won the final three races to capture the ACC Championship Saturday (April 21) on Lake Hartwell in Clemson S.C. With the win, UVa won its third straight and 12th overall conference crown in the 13-year history of the regatta.

"It was a great team win today!" head coach Kevin Sauer said. "Our Varsity Eight continues to push their limits and the 2V8 and Novice Eight also had good races."

Virginia finished with 56 points, followed by Clemson (52), Duke (39), Boston College (27), North Carolina (18) and Miami (17).

The first Varsity Eight was named ACC Crew of the Year and head coach Kevin Sauer was honored as the ACC Coach of the Year for the eighth time.

The 1V8 crew consists of coxswain Sidney Thorsten, Keziah Beall, Martha Kuzzy, Kristine O'Brien, Sarah Cowburn, Fiona Schlesinger, Susanne Grainger, Hemingway Benton and Carli Goldberg.

Thorsten, Beall, Kuzzy, O'Brien and Cowburn were named to the All-ACC Rowing Team.

Rusch Wins ACC Men's Golf Title

Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Virginia sophomore golfer Ben Rusch drained a five-foot par putt on the final hole to win the 2012 ACC Championships by a single stroke and become the first Cavalier to capture the individual title since 1955. Rusch, a native of Weinfelden, Switzerland, shot 3-under 69 during Sunday's cool, rainy conditions for a 54-hole total of 10-under 206. Wake Forest's Lee Bedford was second at 207. The tournament took place at the Old North State Club in New London, N.C. Rusch's victory helped No. 20 Virginia to a second-place finish in the team competition. The Cavaliers shot 1-over 289 during the final round for a three-day total of 20-under 844. That bettered the UVa team scoring record at the ACC Championships by four shots. The 1992 team held the previous best mark at 16-under 848 recorded at Northgreen Country Club in Rocky Mount, N.C.

Georgia Tech won its fourth straight ACC title at 27-under 837. Florida State was third at 847, three shots behind UVa. The Yellow Jackets entered the final round with an 11-shot lead on the Cavaliers. Virginia managed to close that to four shots at one point during the round.

Rusch said he was surprised to learn he was only the second Cavalier golfer to bring home the individual crown since Pete Arend won the title in 1955.

"I didn't know that and it makes me so proud," Rusch said. "I just played and didn't want to control anything and it just happened. I hit some great shots and made some good putts. I didn't really make any putts the first two rounds. I missed many but today I actually made a lot."

Cavs spell doom for Temple

Wali Lundy seems to think Virginia is better than No. 15.
You hope you have a good team. You think you have a good team. You're pretty sure you have a good team. But you don't really know until your team actually plays a game, right?

Well, Virginia apparently has a good football team. The Cavaliers lived up to their preseason hype with a thorough 44-14 rout of Temple in their 2004 opener last Saturday at Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia. They seized a 30-0 lead at the half and cruised from there, rolling up 286 yards on the ground and 504 overall. The defense forced a pair of early turnovers that set the tone for the afternoon.

Of course, we won't really know how good Virginia is until later in the season. The 15th-ranked 'Hoos don't face a ranked opponent until Oct. 7 when they play No. 20 Clemson at Scott Stadium.

Tar Heels Topple Wahoos
Image: Steele StanwickDespite a historic night for the Virginia men's lacrosse program, the Cavaliers could not shake the same demons that haunted them a week ago and fell to North Carolina 11-9 in the ACC Tournament Semifinals in Charlottesville. Steele Stanwick posted his 250th career point, making him Virginia's all-time leading scorer in the loss. The senior finished the game with 2 goals and 5 assists.

Diamond Scouting Report: Duke
The Virginia baseball team bounced back from being swept by UNC at home last weekend by beating the Richmond Spiders on Tuesday night. The Hoos won 7-5 after giving up a 3-run HR in the top of the first inning. Now they play the next two weekend ACC series away from Davenport Field. Here is a brief scouting report on Duke.

Nicholson Inherits Leadership Role
Image: Demetrious NicholsonCornerback is arguably one of the toughest positions in football to play. Learning the position at the college level is even tougher. Having to step in and start as a freshman is almost unheard of. Last season, Virginia true freshman Demetrious "Tra" Nicholson quickly discovered the differences between the high school and college games.

Terrell Flashes Improvement At Wideout
Image: Dominique TerrellHe's wearing the same number and he's playing the same position, but by all accounts Dominique Terrell showed up for spring football practice at Virginia a changed man. As a result, the prolific high school playmaker has picked up his production and started to flash the skills that made him one of the most coveted recruits in the 2011 class.

Diamond Scouting Report: Richmond
After being swept by UNC for the second year in a row, this time at Davenport Field, the Cavalier baseball team will look to get its offense jump-started against Richmond. The Spiders come to town to conclude the current homestand on Tuesday with the game beginning at 6 p.m. Here is a brief scouting report on the Richmond Spiders.

Vozenilek Vies For Punting Spot
Image: Alec VozenilekFor four years and more than 40 games, Jimmy Howell handled the majority of the punting duties for the Virginia football team. With Howell's eligibility exhausted, however, one of the major position replacements for 2012 comes at punter for the Cavaliers. In Saturday's spring game, sophomore Alec Vozenilek provided the only snaps in the critical special teams spot.

Swanson's Versatility Beneficial At Fullback (blog)
The measurements 6’6? and 235 pounds are not your typical numbers for a fullback. But when Virginia needed depth at that position following the departure of transfer Ryan Cobb, the coaching staff turned to Zachary Swanson to help fill the void.
