Virginia Earns No. 4 Seed for ACC Tournament

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The Virginia men's basketball team will be the No. 4 seed in the 2012 ACC Tournament, scheduled for March 8-11 at Philips Arena in Atlanta. The Cavaliers receive a first round bye and will open play with a quarterfinal game against either NC State or Boston College on Friday.

Virginia's quarterfinal game will be at 2 p.m., or 30 minutes following the first game of the day. The ACC Tournament will be televised on the ACC Network within the ACC footprint and on the ESPN family of networks throughout the rest of the nation.

The Cavaliers (22-8) finished in a fourth-place tie with NC State and Miami at 9-7 in ACC play. Virginia defeated Miami and NC State in the only regular season meeting against both the Hurricanes and Wolfpack to win the tiebreaker and earn the No. 4 seed.

This Week In Recruiting

Basketball Recruiting - UVa Recruits In Playoff Action

A pair of Virginia basketball recruits - 2012 class signee Evan Nolte and 2014 class commitment B.J. Stith - are still alive in postseason play after their respective teams earned victories this past weekend.

Nolte, a 6'8" forward, demonstrated his offensive prowess with a 30-point outburst against North Gwinnett. He made 9 of 11 shots, going a perfect 5-5 in the second half in Milton's (Alpharetta, GA) 22-point victory. The Eagles advance to the Class AAAAA State Semifinals, which take place this Thursday.

Stith was hindered by foul trouble in the first half of Saturday's Group AA Division III State Quarterfinal against Handley, but older brother Brandan and senior Shaquille Jones picked up the slack. Brandan Stith and Jones had 21 points apiece as the Bulldogs pulled away from Handley, 63-38.

Brunswick meets Rockbridge County on Tuesday night in a state semifinal game.

Football Recruiting - QBs Come Off The Board

The state of Virginia's class of 2013 features three prominent quarterback prospects: Stone Bridge's Ryan Burns, Fork Union's Christian Hackenberg and Virginia Beach Salem's Bucky Hodges. After last week, only the 6'6", 220-pound Hodges remains uncommitted.

Hackenberg was the first to commit last week, pledging to Penn State and new head coach Bill O'Brien. Burns followed suit last night, choosing Stanford over offers from Penn State, Virginia and others.

There is no question that Burns and Hackenberg were high on the list of UVa targets. The news is not all bad for the Hoos on the quarterback recruiting front, though. As reported on the EDGE last week, Virginia is the heavy favorite for 6'5", 210-pound junior Brendan "Whitey" Marshall. Marshall plans on visiting Virginia again in late March or early April and mentioned the possibility of committing, but it wouldn't be a surprise if a pledge came sooner rather than later.

We'll be sure to monitor any new developments with Marshall this week, in addition to the usual beat of class of 2013 recruiting updates.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre EDGE recruiting updates since the last SabreMail ...

Marshall Is High On The Hoos
Image: Brendan MarshallGood Counsel (Olney, MD) quarterback Brendan "Whitey" Marshall has recently taken two ACC recruiting visits, including one to Boston College and one to UVa. The 6'5", 210-pound junior was in Charlottesville for the football program's February 25 junior day, the first time he has been to UVa since taking in the home game against Virginia Tech last fall. There is no question that the talented signal caller likes what he has seen in Virginia so far.

Mizzell Has "Great" Visit To UVa
Image: Taquan MizzellThe University of Virginia football program is establishing quite the pipeline at Bayside High School (Virginia Beach, VA). It started in the class of 2010 with linebacker Henry Coley. Cornerback Demetrious "Tra" Nicholson signed in 2011 and subsequently started every game of the 2011 season. Wide receiver/safety Anthony Cooper signed with the Hoos in 2012. Rising senior running back Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell, Mike London and company hope, will be UVa's fourth Marlins recruit in as many years.

Scott To Miss Rest Of Season

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia senior forward Mike Scott (Chesapeake, Va.) will undergo a second operation on his left ankle and miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season. The 6-8 Scott had arthroscopic surgery on Dec. 16 to remove loose pieces of cartilage from the ankle. The second surgery is for additional cartilage work and to remove impinging bone spurs. He is expected to return to full activity in three to four months.

Scott has not played in six of Virginia's last seven games.

"Obviously we are going to miss having Mike on the court, but the most important consideration is what's best for him," said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. "He will have the operation and focus on taking care of rehabilitating his ankle. In his absence all of our players will need to continue to step up and our young frontcourt players will continue to gain valuable experience."

It is expected that the paperwork necessary to request a medical hardship enabling Scott to retain a year of eligibility will be filed.

Scott has played in 10 games this season and leads the Cavaliers in scoring (15.9 ppg.) and rebounding (10.2 rpg.) average. He has six double-doubles, including a stretch of five double-doubles in a row. He is the first Virginia player to have five consecutive double-doubles since Ralph Sampson in 1983.

Scott was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 6 for his play in the Cavaliers' victories at Minnesota (Nov. 29) and Virginia Tech (Dec. 5).

Sabre staff note: TheSabre.com's sources indicate that Scott's intentions right now are to undergo rehabilitation, apply for the medical hardship waiver, and, if granted, return to Virginia next season.

Hoos Topple Terps For 22nd Win
Image: Mike ScottVirginia flirted with another disappointing late-game collapse on Sunday, but the team's seniors produced monster games and the Hoos came through with an important overtime win against Maryland in College Park. The Cavaliers' Mike Scott and Sammy Zeglinski combined for 55 points, including 8 in the decisive OT period, to lead the way to a 75-72 victory. At 22-8, UVa posted its most regular season wins since 1982-83 when that team won 25 contests.

Maryland Primer No. 2
Image: Joe HarrisAfter dropping their fourth 3-point game to a top 3 ACC team in a 63-60 home loss to Florida State on Thursday, the Virginia Cavaliers (21-8, 8-7 ACC) head to College Park on Sunday for their traditional end-of-the-season game against the Maryland Terrapins (16-13, 6-9 ACC). Will UVa pick up a win and in all likelihood seal up a bid to the NCAA Tournament, or will the Terps trip up the Hoos and leave them with question marks heading into the ACC Tournament?

Diamond Scouting Report: Wright State, Seton Hall
The Virginia baseball team's current homestand concludes with four more games this weekend, two each against Wright State and Seton Hall. The Cavaliers look to rebound from a lackluster effort in a forgettable 8-0 loss to Liberty this past Tuesday. Here are brief scouting reports on Wright State and Seton Hall.

Seminoles Stun Hoos
Image: Mike ScottDespite being without the services of Malcolm Brogdon, Virginia had 22nd ranked Florida State on the ropes late Thursday night. But it couldn't deliver the knockout blow. FSU mounted a furious rally in the final five minutes and landed one final counterpunch to win the game when guard Ian Miller buried an off balance 3-pointer to beat the buzzer. The Seminoles escaped John Paul Jones Arena with a 63-60 win.

Beyond The Lawn With Clint Sintim: The Super Bowl Experience
Image: Beyond The Lawn with Clint Sintim If you ever needed motivation for anything, winning the Super Bowl is probably the easiest way to be motivated. To be out there and watch the game from a fan's perspective with a seat is bittersweet. You want to be out there. You want to play. You want to share that moment with those guys you went through camp with. Unfortunately, it didn't come to pass this year. But I was at the game. Game day I woke up excited as if I was going to play.

Florida State Primer No. 2
Image: Mike ScottAfter a gut-wrenching 54-51 home loss to UNC on Saturday, the Virginia Cavaliers (21-7, 8-6 ACC) are back in action Thursday night at the John Paul Jones Arena, playing host to the Florida State Seminoles (19-9, 10-4 ACC). Will the Cavs secure their first win against Florida State since their last NCAA Tournament appearance in 2007, or will the Noles pick up their 20th win on the season?

Diamond Scouting Report: Liberty
Image: Keith WermanThe Virginia baseball team swept the previously undefeated Monmouth Hawks in a three-game series over this past weekend and the Hoos jumpstarted their offense in a big way by scoring a total of 38 runs on 44 hits in the three wins. The Cavaliers are now 5-1-1 with a four-game win streak. They welcome the Liberty Flames to Davenport Field on Tuesday starting at 3 p.m. At 8-1, Liberty is off to a fast start of its own and will bring a high-powered offense to town for this in-state baseball matchup.
