This Week In Recruiting

This week will be filled with updates from this past Saturday's junior day event, which was attended by some of UVa's top targets in the class of 2013 and beyond.

An article is up this morning on 6'7", 260-pound offensive tackle recruit Parker Osterloh, who has been offered by Virginia and Virginia Tech. It's very likely that the Warhill (Williamsburg, VA) standout will commit this spring, and there is a good chance right now that the choice will come down to the Hoos and Hokies. Osterloh attended Virginia Tech's Feb. 18 junior day before heading to Charlottesville this past Saturday.

I'll also have a full update on South County (Lorton, VA) outside linebacker prospect Oren Burks, who scored offers from Virginia and Virginia Tech within the past two weeks. The 6'4", 195-pound junior, also a Feb. 25 junior day attendee, also boasts offers from NC State and West Virginia.

Also planned on Monday is an update on Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) running back Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell. The speedy and elusive junior had been to Charlottesville numerous times before, but he returned this past weekend for another look. Mizzell, whose recruitment keeps getting hotter and hotter, enjoyed the day.

Other notable attendees from this past weekend include Wyomissing Area (Wyomissing, PA) linebacker Alex Anzalone and Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, VA) offensive lineman Braxton Pfaff. Anzalone is one of the top linebacker prospects in the class of 2013, while Pfaff has recently become a hot in-state commodity. We plan to have updates on these players and much more throughout the week.

More Top Juniors Set To Visit UVa
Image: Ryan BurnsTime will tell just how successful Virginia February 18 junior day was, but the Hoos made inroads with some top targets in the class of 2013. One, in fact, plans on returning to Charlottesville tomorrow for what will be Virginia's second junior day of the month. Read about this prospect and others we have confirmed for Saturday.

Virginia Men Capture 15th ACC Crown

Virginia Athletics Media Relations official releases

On the 25th anniversary of Virginia's first Atlantic Coast Conference swimming championship in 1987, the men's swimming and diving team claimed its 15th conference title Saturday at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va.

It was the fifth consecutive league title for the Cavaliers and the 13th in the last 14 years. The championship also marked the 25th won by the Virginia swimming and diving program, all under 34th-year head coach Mark Bernardino. The UVa women won their 10th ACC crown last week.

Bernardino also matches legendary coach Don Easterling, the former NC State mentor, with 15 men's championships.

Virginia accumulated 626.5 points throughout the four-day meet to hold off host Virginia Tech (594.5) and North Carolina (564).

"We had enough depth and enough good fortune that we were able to capture this one, somehow, some way," Bernardino said. "Virginia Tech and the entire conference this year was tremendous. It's great to win for our seniors and it was great experience for our young athletes. We brought nine to this meet who had never been here before. I hope they learned a little bit about what it takes to perform at this level."

Heels Hold Off Cavaliers
Image: Joe HarrisVirginia held North Carolina to a season-low 54 points, but it was not enough. The Cavaliers went scoreless in the final three minutes of the game at the John Paul Jones Arena on Saturday, eventually falling to the seventh-ranked Tar Heels 54-51. UVa is 21-7 on the season with an 8-6 ACC record.

UNC Primer No. 2
After scraping by Virginia Tech, the Virginia Cavaliers (21-6, 8-5 ACC) return home to the John Paul Jones Arena for a Saturday tilt with No. 7 UNC (24-4, 11-2 ACC). Will the Hoos secure their first victory over a top 10 team this season and ensure a winning ACC record, or will the Tar Heels sweep the season series? The North Carolina Primer takes a closer look.

Moving Scott Paying Dividends For Hoos
Image: Mike ScottIt's no secret that Virginia's Mike Scott is having an outstanding senior season. The Cavalier forward averages 17.3 points and 8.2 rebounds per game for UVa's 21-6 club after all. The scoring number has climbed in conference games to 18.8 points per game, no easy feat when you consider that Scott is literally a marked man for ACC defenses. The Hoos, however, have made it more difficult for teams to play tag on Scott in recent outings.

Diamond Scouting Report: Monmouth
The home portion of the 2012 baseball season got off to a thrilling start Wednesday afternoon with an emotionally draining come-from-behind 6-5 win over William & Mary in 11 innings. Now, the Cardiac Cavs welcome the Monmouth Hawks of the Northeast Conference to Davenport Field for the first time in history for a three-game set this weekend. The Hawks are undefeated at 3-0 in 2012 and scored a total of 31 runs in their first three games. Friday's game begins at 3 p.m. while both the games on Saturday and Sunday start at 1 p.m.

Beyond The Lawn With Stephanie Marie Garcia: Cross Country Redux
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie GarciaMy earliest memories of cross country come from high school; my very first cross country race was at our home course, set on the campus of a local community college. Flat, monotonous loops in the fall heat were the backdrop to my first attempt at racing cross country and, while I was successful from the very start, I was never able to really forge the commitment to long distance racing like I did later to racing on the track.

Diamond Scouting Report: W&M
Image: Jared KingThe Virginia baseball team opened its 2012 season by splitting three games over the weekend in Conway, SC, including a rare tie. Now, the Cavaliers return home to the friendly confines of Davenport Field for a nine-game home stand that begins with William & Mary. That contest was moved to Wednesday (today) at 3 p.m. due to the snowfall this past Sunday in Charlottesville. Here is a brief scouting report.

Hoos Find A Way To Win At VT
Image: Coach Tony BennettVirginia coach Tony Bennett likes for his players to embrace words like resilience and resolve. For one night in Blacksburg, the Hoos did more than just adopt those words. They clung to them with ferocity. Already down to an eight-man scholarship rotation on the season, UVa lost two players to fouls and had a third limited with a foot injury while fending off a final Virginia Tech rally on Tuesday night, but the visiting Cavaliers survived to win 61-59. The 21st victory of the campaign ties the program's most in a season since 1994-95.

Evans Making Strides At Stripe
When it comes to free throws, Virginia point guard Jontel Evans is hard at work. Before practice. After practice. During practice. The results are noticeable for the junior from Hampton. The reason for the improvement is clear too.

Virginia Tech Primer No. 2
Image: Joe HarrisAfter dominating the second half in a 71-44 home victory over Maryland, the Virginia Cavaliers (20-6, 7-5 ACC) hit the road again and travel across the state for a return engagement with the Virginia Tech Hokies (15-12, 4-8 ACC) on Tuesday night. Can the Cavaliers notch 8 ACC wins in a season for the first time under Tony Bennett, or will the Hokies snag the season sweep?
