Hokies Vs. Hoos Food Fight

Seven years of the friendly but fierce rivalry between Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia has yielded food and funds for more than 236,000 meals for the hungry in central Virginia via the annual "Hokies vs. Hoos" food drive. Martin's, which hosted donation bins for the first time last year, has become the title sponsor. This year's competition will be held at all Richmond-area Martin's supermarkets during the week of the big UVa vs. Virginia Tech basketball showdown in Blacksburg on Feb. 21. Donation bins will be set up inside all Richmond-area Martin's stores from Monday, Feb. 20 through Sunday, Feb. 26. Martin's will also afford customers the opportunity to make monetary donations at the registers this year.

The Hokies vs. Hoos "Food Fight" capitalizes on the fierce rivalry between Virginia Tech and UVa alumni and fans by encouraging donations during a time of year when donations typically decline after the holidays. Virginia leads the seven-year competition 4-3.

Each can or box of food donated in the Virginia Tech or UVa bins in each location will count for 1 point, and every dollar donated at Martin's between 2/20-2/26, or online between Monday, 2/13 and Wednesday, 2-29 at www.hokiesvshoos.com will count for 5 points. The score will be updated daily on the competition website, www.hokiesvshoos.com, with the winner to be announced on Friday, March 2.

This Week In Recruiting

There was a good turnout for the first of two junior day events the University of Virginia football program is hosting this month. 4-star junior linebacker Dorian O'Daniel, a product of Good Counsel High School (Olney, MD), was one of the headliners of the group of recruits in Charlottesville on Saturday. O'Daniel boasts offers from all across the country.

There were many other standouts in attendance as well, including in-state linebacker prospects Doug Randolph and Matt Rolin, in-state safety Mike Parker, Washington (D.C.) cornerback Devin Butler, and more. Butler scored an offer on Saturday, while the others had been offered before. Parker came away highly impressed and plans to return to Charlottesville this coming Saturday.

A handful of updates have been posted on the EDGE Subscribers board on Randolph, Parker, Rolin, and more. We'll have full articles on these recruits and others throughout the week, so stay tuned. Also this week ...

  • Liberty (Bealeton, VA) defensive lineman Wyatt Teller reflects on his visit to Virginia Tech on Saturday as well as his recent trip to UVa. The 6'5", 250-pound prospect, holder of 12 major FBS scholarship offers, spoke highly of the recent experience in Charlottesville.
  • Thomas Dale (Chester, VA) athlete D.J. Reid scored an offer from Florida recently, bringing his offer total to three. UVa and Virginia Tech have offered as well, and the 6'1", 185-pound speedster plans to be at UVa this coming Saturday for a junior day.
  • Later this week, we'll take a look at those prospects scheduled to attend the Feb. 25 junior day. It should be an exciting one, as the men's basketball team hosts UNC on that Saturday.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Virginia Women Capture 10th ACC Crown

Virginia Athletics Media Relations official releases

The Virginia women's swimming team captured its 10th Atlantic Coast Conference crown Saturday, including its fifth consecutive, at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center in Christiansburg, Va. The Cavaliers finished with 848 points. North Carolina was second (615) and Florida State took third (460).

The class of 2012 - Kelly Flynn, Meredith Perdue and Erika Stewart - become just the second class in UVa history to depart with four titles.

"This group learned how to be a team and really found its own identity," Virginia coach Mark Bernardino said. "Our seniors were the absolute glue of the team. They made everybody feel welcome and important. They helped our first years through the process of being college athletes. As far as I'm concerned, they grew that group into the swimmers they became as the year developed."

"Every year has been extremely different and full of ups and downs," Stewart said. "I am so proud of this team and feel so blessed to be a part of this legacy that we have built for the last five years."

Virginia capped the meet by edging out Maryland for a win in the 400 freestyle relay. Lauren Perdue, Meredith Cavalier, Flynn and Emily Lloyd teamed up to win the event in a NCAA 'B' time of 3:16.50. On the week, Virginia won four of the five relays.

Wahoos go 1-1 in rivalry week

Gary Forbes scored 44 points in the past two games.

Virginia's two biggest rivals, it's safe to say, are Virginia Tech and North Carolina. That rivalry has been more intense in football than basketball, but the Cavaliers took on both teams over the past six days on the hardwood - with mixed results.

UVa handled the Hokies 65-60 at University Hall on Saturday, preventing VaTech from sweeping the season series. If nothing else, the 'Hoos prevented the Hokies from claiming bragging rights in football and basketball. That would have been unbearable.

No such luck against the Tar Heels, who pounded Virginia for the second time this season Wednesday. The 85-61 rout wasn't as embarrassing as UNC's 110-76 win at U-Hall two weeks earlier, but it illustrated once again how the Cavs have been unable to compete against the ACC's top teams this season.

Gary Forbes was UVa's star in both games, scoring 21 against Virginia Tech and 23 vs. North Carolina. With four regular-season games remaining (next up: Maryland at U-Hall tomorrow), the Wahoos are 13-10 overall and 4-8 in the ACC.

Mike Scott, Virginia Destroy Terrapins
Image: Mike ScottAfter losing back-to-back games for the first time this season and three of its last four outings, the Virginia men's basketball team found a cure to its ills Saturday: turtle soup with a dash of hot shooting for flavor. The Cavaliers sapped Maryland's energy in the second half with suffocating defense and added 48.1% shooting on the afternoon to win easily, 71-44. No one was hotter than Cav senior Mike Scott, who made 10 of 20 shots and 5 of 5 free throws to post an ACC career-high of 25 points.

Maryland Primer
After losing consecutive games for the first time this season, the Virginia Cavaliers (19-6, 6-5 ACC) return home from a two-game road trip to face the Maryland Terrapins (15-10, 5-6 ACC) on Saturday. Will the Hoos pick up a much-needed win against the Terps to bolster their chances at securing a bid to the NCAA Tournament? A soldout crowd will be on hand to find the answer.

Diamond Scouting Report: Opening Weekend
Image: Coach Brian O'Connor Virginia opens its 2012 baseball season this weekend with three games in the round-robin Caravelle Resort Tournament in Myrtle Beach, SC. The Cavaliers last appeared in this annual opening weekend tournament, hosted by Coastal Carolina, in both 2006 and 2007. James Madison and Boston College round out the tournament field this year. Three of the four teams involved in this weekend's games went to the NCAA Tournament last year, which will mean some exciting early season matchups that could answer a few questions about what the Wahoo faithful can expect from the baseball team in 2012.

Beyond The Lawn With Tyler Wilson - The Art Of Pitching
Image: Beyond The Lawn with Tyler WilsonArt generally refers to aesthetically pleasing principles ranging from interpreting tangible masterpieces to the eloquence of purposefully flowing works of genius. Some see the Mona Lisa as the epitome of beauty and pure magic drizzled from da Vinci's fingertips, or Beethoven's Fifth Symphony as rhythmic depictions of what would be a breathtaking vision. Regardless of the canvas, artists share in the pursuit of beauty and attainment of perfection however varied the method. Although I can essentially guarantee Leonardo and Ludwig's image of perfection to be drastically different than Roy Halladay's, it is inarguable that pitching is also an art.

Tigers, Turnovers Topple Virginia
Image: Jontel EvansThe Virginia men's basketball team's shaky February showing took another wobble Tuesday night when the Cavaliers suffered a 60-48 setback at Clemson. The Hoos, who soared to an 18-3 record through January, dropped their third loss in four games this month. All three defeats have come on the ACC road.

Clemson Primer No. 2
After foul trouble and UNC's 19 offensive rebounds doomed UVa to a 70-52 loss at the Dean Dome, the Cavaliers (19-5, 6-4 ACC) head to Littlejohn Coliseum on Tuesday night for their second game of the season against Clemson (12-12, 4-6 ACC). Can the Cavs pick up a much needed win to buoy their hopes of securing an NCAA Tournament bid, or will the Tanner Smith and the Tigers sink the Hoos?
