This Week In Recruiting

Salem (Virginia Beach, VA) standout Divante Walker was the only uncommitted official visitor on Grounds this past weekend ... that is, until he committed to Mike London and company before heading home on Sunday. The 5'10", 175-pound senior, a big-time performer at tailback this past season, is a cornerback recruit for the Hoos.

This week, TheSabre.com will have more on Walker and his decision to commit to the Cavaliers. We'll also check in with numerous other recruits that were in Charlottesville this past weekend. Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL) linebacker/safety prospect Demeitre Brim took some time Sunday night to reflect on his official visit experience at UVa. What stood out to him most was the bond among all of UVa's 2012 recruits.

"I think the relationships all the players had," Brim answered when asked what his top highlight was from the weekend. "We all seemed very close. All of us had a relationship with one another. The coaches want what's best for you. They have so much compassion for the players."

One player missing on Sunday was North Hall (Gainesville, GA) running back Imani Cross. Cross' high school coach Bob Christmas confirmed Monday morning that the 6'1", 225-pound senior has narrowed his list to Kentucky and Nebraska and cancelled an official visit to Virginia that was scheduled to start on Sunday.

We will check in with athlete Trent Corney early next week for the latest on his standing with UVa. Corney, who took an official visit to UVa the weekend of Jan. 13, expects to soon learn his standing in terms of an official scholarship offer from Virginia.

Also this week, we'll have the latest on Gil St. Bernard's (N.J.) junior point guard Jaren Sina, who made an unofficial visit to UVa on Sunday. UVa has offered Sina, who had never visited Virginia before.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for EDGE subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Johns Excited For Signing Day
Image: Matt JohnsOn February 1, 6'4", 195-pound quarterback prospect Matt Johns will sign a letter of intent with the University of Virginia, the school he committed to on June 11 of last year. Signing Day will "be a day of closure. It'll be a day where my dream becomes reality," said the Central Bucks South (Warrenton, PA) star. "I'll officially be part of the UVa program."

Starsia Earns FieldTurf Honor

Virginia Athletics Media Relations official release

Hall of Fame UVa head men's lacrosse coach Dom Starsia was named FieldTurf's 2011 men's NCAA DI Coach of the Year. The honor marks Starsia's third win in the six-year history of the award and second in a row. Starsia also won the award in 2008. "I am greatly appreciative to FieldTurf for having selected me for this award," said Starsia. "It is a company known for quality work and this recognition reflects the effort of everyone associated with Virginia Lacrosse. This past 2011 season is now a special memory and FieldTurf remains a partner in those meaningful achievements."

Starsia will enter his 20th season at Virginia in 2012 with 329 career victories, the most all-time at the Division I level, passing iconic coach Jack Emmer (326) with UVa's 2011 NCAA Quarterfinal win against Cornell. His Cavalier squads have won four NCAA titles and reached Championship Weekend 13 times. He has won more games than any coach in the ACC and Virginia history, sporting a 228-72 (.760) record. In 19 seasons with Virginia, Starsia reached his 300th career game with the Cavaliers in 2011, fittingly it was the 2011 NCAA title game against Maryland at Baltimore's M&T Bank Stadium. UVa's efforts helped garner Starsia an ESPY nomination for Best Coach.

Starisa has been named USILA's National Coach of the Year three times (1985, 1991 & 2011), named the ACC Coach of the Year a record eight times (1995, '96, '99, '00, '02, '03, '06, '09).

Starsia and the Cavaliers open up the 2012 season on Feb. 18 when UVa travels up to Philadelphia to contest the Drexel Dragons.

   SabreMail History

Issue No. 167 - Dec. 3, 2004

Another Gill, another Glading in men's lacrosse class

Conor Gill helped Virginia win the NCAA championship as a freshman in 1999. Billy Glading did the same as a senior in 2003. Let's hope their little brothers make the same kind of impact for the Cavaliers in the future.

Gavin Gill and Danny Glading are among the 10 recruits who signed letters-of-intent with the UVa men's lacrosse team. Both will come to Charlottesville with high expectations, if only because their brothers were All-Americans, but each is a highly-regarded player in his own right.

Gill is among the nation's top high school attackmen, having led his St. Paul's team in Baltimore to the MIAA championship as a junior. Glading, a midfielder, is the nation's No. 1 recruit, according to some analysts. He had 45 assists last season for Georgetown Prep in Bethesda, Md.

Hokies Edge Hoos At JPJ
Image: Mike ScottOff to its best start in 30 years with a 10-game home winning streak in tow, the Virginia men's basketball team couldn't find a way to shake its in-state rival Virginia Tech on Sunday. The Hokies, who entered the game winless in the ACC, executed a superb defensive game plan and pulled off the upset against No. 15 UVa, 47-45, in front of a sold-out crowd at the John Paul Jones Arena.

Virginia Tech Primer
Image: Akil MitchellAfter crushing Georgia Tech on the road 70-38 Thursday night to move to 15-2 (2-1 ACC) on the season, the Hoos return home to face another Tech on Sunday: the cross-state rivals from Blacksburg. The Hokies are reeling, having lost their first four ACC games, culminating in a 82-68 loss at The Barn to UNC on Thursday in which the Gobblers fell apart in the second half. Can the Cavaliers win their third straight against the Hokies?

Photo Gallery: Virginia 52, Miami 51

Please check out this free photo gallery of 58 images of the event, many of them of Mike Scott. Scott, a preseason first-team All-ACC pick, had 23 points and 8 rebounds in the victory. Hoos Torch Yellow Jackets
Image: Joe HarrisDominant. Offense, defense, scoring, rebounding, shooting. Pick a category. That adjective describes Virginia's effort across the board against Georgia Tech in Atlanta on Thursday. The No. 15 Cavaliers picked up their first ACC road win of the season to the tune of a 70-38 demolition of the Ramblin' Wreck at Philips Arena. The Hoos improved to 15-2 and 2-1 in the ACC with the win.

Beyond The Lawn With Stephanie Marie Garcia - Commitment: Or, Why I Moved To Tennessee
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie Garcia2012 is a huge year - and saying even that is an understatement. It's the first year I'll be able to seriously participate in the Olympic Trials. It's a big year for me after competing for Team USA at the Track and Field World Championships in Daegu, South Korea last August. It's a big year for women's steeplechase, as 2012 will only be the second Olympic Games to have women's steeplechase as an event.

Georgia Tech Primer
Image: Sammy ZeglinskiAfter seeing a 12-game winning streak snapped at Cameron Indoor Stadium, the Cavaliers hit the road again and seek to return to their winning ways against Georgia Tech on Thursday night. But the game won't be at the Alexander Memorial Coliseum, which is being renovated and rechristened the Hank McCamish Pavilion. Instead, the game will be held at Philips Arena, the home of the NBA's Hawks. Will the Hoos be able to continue their recent success against the Rambling Wreck, one of two teams whom Tony Bennett has not lost against in his tenure at UVa?

Reviewing UVa's Hot Start With A Look Ahead
Image: Jontel EvansA little more than midway through the season with the meat of the ACC schedule up next, the Virginia Cavaliers find themselves with a top 20 ranking (No. 15 in the latest Associated Press poll) and a 14-2 record. At 1-1 in the ACC, the Hoos, who just lost a nail-biter to No. 6 Duke in Cameron Indoor Stadium, are at an interesting juncture in the season. This team, and even the very program that Tony Bennett is building, is at a potential crossroads.
