Hoos Face Michigan Next

After Virginia men's basketball team defeated Green Bay on Friday, 68-42, the attention turned to Michigan, the Cavaliers'opponent in this season's Big Ten/ACC Challenge. The Hoos and Wolverines face off on Tuesday night at the John Paul Jones Arena at 7 p.m. The game is televised on ESPN2.

Here are some of UVa's thoughts on the upcoming game:

Coach Tony Bennett: "They're one of the best teams in the country it appears. They can hurt you in a lot of different ways. We have to be ready to play. I told our guys it's about playing possession by possession. You have to be so good defensively. Certainly we need to be healthy and we'll need to play at a high level, but our system is geared to play good teams and we're going to give everything we've got. I know they're very good. I haven't watched them exclusively. I just saw a few deals at the Maui Invitational, but they're playing at a high level right now."

Forward Akil Mitchell: "They're a good team. I haven't really seen them too much yet."

Guard Jontel Evans: "They've been one of the top 25 teams in the country. They've been playing some great ball. We watched them in Maui. We're just looking forward to the challenge."

This Week In Recruiting

In terms of quantity and quality, Virginia had a big recruiting turnout for Saturday's game against Virginia Tech. Good Counsel (Olney, MD) senior wide receiver Stefon Diggs did make the trip as expected. Brookville (Lynchburg, VA) defensive tackle Korren Kirven, another top remaining 2012 class target of the Hoos, was on hand as well. Joining these two were a number of 2012 class commitments including Eli Harold and Michael Moore, and some top 2013 class prospects including Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) quarterback Ryan Burns, Hermitage (Richmond, VA) tailback Derrick Green, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) tailback Taquan Mizzell and more.

Diggs, a 5-star prospect according to Rivals.com and Scout.com, reportedly will reveal his final seven this Tuesday.

Throughout this week, I'll be hitting the phones for reaction to Saturday's contest and providing EDGE updates. First up, read the latest on Hermitage offensive guard and UVa commitment Andre Miles-Redmond and Patrick Henry (Roanoke, VA) junior David Prince. Both prospects were in attendance Saturday.

Last Friday night, Miles-Redmond helped Hermitage to a 10-0 win over L.C. Bird in the Division 6, Central Region final. The Panthers will host Ken Ekanem-led Centreville this Saturday in the Division 6 state semifinals. The winner will take on the winner of the Oscar Smith/Battlefield contest on Dec. 10 at Scott Stadium.

Read more on Miles-Redmond and the rest of Virginia's 2012 class still in action in this morning's "Week In Review" on the Good Ol Blog.

Nov. 27 marked the beginning of the Contact Period in the Division 1 men's football. It's less eventful this year, as Virginia has 24 high school seniors committed in the 2012 class. Now, it's all about waiting for those top, top targets - the aforementioned Diggs and Kirven are two of them - to decide before putting the finishing touches on 2012. The staff will of course stay in touch with those committed recruits, but look for a lot of work to be done on the 2013 class in the coming months.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

After Tough Loss, Johns Moving Forward
Image: Matt JohnsUVa had a fourth down stop on Florida State's final drive negated by a facemask penalty, but the Hoos were able to hold on anyway for a 14-13 win. Central Bucks South (Warrington, PA), which features Cavaliers quarterback recruit Matt Johns, wasn't as fortunate. Garnet Valley scored the winning touchdown with 16 seconds left in regulation, moments after the Titans had a fourth down stop negated by a facemask penalty.

UVa Begins Accepting Bowl Ticket Requests

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The Virginia athletics department announced Monday it is accepting requests for football bowl game tickets. The Cavaliers became eligible to participate in a bowl for the first time since 2007 on Saturday when they won at Maryland 31-13 for their sixth victory of the season.

It is not expected that bowl invitations will be extended until Sunday, Dec. 4, after selections are announced for the Bowl Championship Series, due to the Atlantic Coast Conference's bowl agreements. It would mark the 18th time in the history of the UVa football program the Cavaliers will compete in a bowl game.

All fans are encouraged to order bowl tickets from the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office. Each bowl game has a minimum number of tickets the participating schools must purchase. Only tickets purchased through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office will count towards the minimum number UVa must purchase. In addition, purchasing tickets through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office ensures Cavalier fans are seated together at the game.

Bowl game ticket requests are now being accepted from donors, football season ticket holders and the general public (including alumni) until the priority deadline of Dec. 7. Customers will need to provide a credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover) to place an order but will not be charged until the actual bowl selection is determined. Student tickets will be sold beginning Monday, Dec. 5 at 9 a.m. through the SHOTS ticket request system until the designated student section is sold out. Priority for ticket requests and seating will be given first to Virginia Athletics Foundation donors based on priority points, second to season ticket holders on a date received basis and then to the general public on a date received basis.

A Bowl Central website is linked to the front page of VirginiaSports.com to provide updates as information regarding UVa's bowl invitation becomes available. A list of all of the ACC's bowl partners is included with direct links to the various bowl games' official websites. The ACC's bowl selection process is also available at Bowl Central. Fans can make their bowl ticket request online at VirginiaSports.com by logging into their online account or through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium. The ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for in-person or telephone purchases. Telephone purchases can be made by calling 1-800-542-UVA1 (8821) or locally at 434-924-UVA1 (8821).

Cavaliers take it to Tigers

Alvin Pearman
Clemson had imploded in its previous three games, committing scores of turnovers, but the Tigers didn't give away Thursday night's game at Scott Stadium. Instead, the Cavaliers took it.

Playing physical football, No. 10 Virginia wore down the visitors and earned a 30-10 victory in front of a national audience on ESPN. Alvin Pearman and Wali Lundy combined for 189 rushing yards behind a powerful offensive line that took charge of a close game in the second half.

The Tigers scored a touchdown on their first drive and led 10-3 after the first quarter, but the Cavaliers gradually assumed control. The defense limited Clemson to 112 yards and no points in the final three quarters. Meanwhile, Marques Hagans helped Virginia convert 14 of 20 third downs and threw for a career-high 225 yards. Connor Hughes kicked three field goals as UVa stayed unbeaten at 5-0 overall, 2-0 in the ACC.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

The Sunday Sampler 2011 - VT
Image: Steve GreerThe UVa football team used a David vs. Goliath motivator to take down Florida State in Tallahassee for the first time. That's not surprising. For most of the 2011 season, the Hoos had been riding a nobody-believes-in-us mindset. The Cavaliers invested in that underdog mentality to rally from a last-place division finish 2010 to a chance at the Coastal Division title in the final week. They needed much more than that on the regular season's final Saturday.

Cavaliers Falter Against VT
Image: Coach Mike LondonIn a season where the Cavaliers exceeded expectations and went on a streak-busting spree, they couldn't shake one final demon in the season finale on Saturday. The Virginia football team dropped a painful 38-0 decision to Virginia Tech in the game for the ACC's Coastal Division title, marking the program's eighth straight loss to the rival Hokies. It's the first time Virginia was shut out in 61 games, dating back to the 17-0 loss to VT in 2006.

Hoos Chalk Up Win No. 5
Image: KT HarrellThe Virginia men's basketball team suffered neither a post-Thanksgiving nor a post-Island letdown Friday night when Green Bay visited Charlottesville. In fact, the Cavaliers led by double digits for nearly the entire game en route to a 68-42 victory against coach Tony Bennett's alma mater. Virginia is 5-1 on the season.

Virginia Tech Watch List
This weekend's showdown between Virginia and Virginia Tech has a lot on the line for the in-state rivals. The winner claims the ACC's Coastal Division title and earns a spot in the ACC Championship Game against Clemson. What can the Cavaliers do to upend the Hokies for the first time in seven seasons and earn their first spot in the title game? The Virginia Tech Watch List looks at a couple of items for the big game.

A Rivalry's Contentious Roots
Image: Ahmad Hawkins scores the winning touchdown over Virginia Tech in the greatest comeback in UVa Football historyIt's one thing to dislike a rival, but when fans (and players) start using the word "hate" you wonder how it got this bad. Why do these two programs dislike each other so much? It's as if the two factions have been trained to vilify the other, but don't know why. And whether it's an intentional cover-up, or just lost details over the passage of time, one event in the football feud between the schools has become a little hazy - but it's the reason why the animosity all began.

Game Preview 2011: VT
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsIn many ways, the 2011 Cavaliers have become streak-busters. They stopped the three-game losing skid against Duke. They erased an 0-8 record in Tallahassee against Florida State. They snapped a 13-game November losing streak and have won all three games this month. They ended a two-year winless streak in ACC road games. Well, there's one more streak on the table this week. Rest assured, Virginia wants to end this one too. UVa faces rival Virginia Tech on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when it will try to break a seven-game losing streak against the Hokies.

Robot Runner: Will Technology Make Me Better?
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie GarciaI am the least technologically savvy athlete out there. I never run with my iPod. A running watch? I didn't own one until well into my first year at UVa. Then this fall my coach broke the news to me: I needed to get a heart rate monitor and wear it for every single run. Don't forget, I'm the girl who didn't even own a running watch throughout high school. The thought of having to strap a device onto my chest every day and having my runs tracked via satellite was more high maintenance than I ever expected to be.

Greg's Game Report 2011: FSU
Image: Michael Rocco Last week I noted that the Cavaliers proved they could defeat a decent team when not playing their best. Saturday against FSU, Virginia proved it could take down a very, very good football team, on the road when not playing its best. I've seen many Virginia games in Doak and I've always sensed a level of intimidation every time I've watched the Cavaliers play in Tallahassee. The thing that was evident to me Saturday was this Virginia team had no fear and was not intimidated. To the contrary, the Hoos came into to the game and matched Florida State's intensity and frankly, was the more physical team. The Cavaliers played like a team about to play for divisional championship game.

The Rewards Of Giving Back
Image: Beyond The Lawn with Tyler WilsonWhile the differences between a collegiate baseball experience and a professional career appear most obviously in different sounding bats, aged men with classic facial hair (most notably Brian Wilson's beard), and constant media exposure, the most trying adjustments for a player in transition occur behind the scenes.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2011 ... FSU
Image: Perry JonesThink about this: how often do you celebrate a win not once, but twice? And think about this: celebrating the win twice would not have been a bit of fun unless the team got to celebrate it a third time. But celebrate a third time, the Hoos did, and arguably even a fourth time after the kneel-down ... but at that point, the Hoos almost were too spent to celebrate again! Fortunately, now that we have had time to rest, we get to go back and break it all down in this week's 10 Things.

Cavaliers Hold Off Drake
Image: Joe HarrisThe Virginia men's basketball team built a 17-point lead early in the second half and then held off a Drake comeback attempt to win its final game in the Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands, 60-52. UVa posted a 2-1 record in the event and owns a 4-1 record on the season. Though disappointed with a Friday night loss to TCU, Cavalier coach Tony Bennett was pleased to head back to Charlottesville with two wins in tow.

Photo Gallery: Virginia 31, Duke 21
Image: Perry JonesVirginia assured itself of no less than a winning season by defeating Duke, 31-21, on November 12th. The Cavaliers won their seventh game of the season and continued to keep alive their hopes for winning the ACC Coastal Division. Perry Jones scored on a leap into the endzone to help secure the victory. 60 photos help tell the story. Enjoy!
