Ralph Sampson Inducted Collegiate Hall

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Former Virginia standout Ralph Sampson was inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame on Sunday (Nov. 20) at the Midland Theatre in Kansas City. Sampson is the first Virginia player to be inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame.

The eight-member induction class includes players Chris Mullin, Cazzie Russell, James Worthy and Sampson, coaches Bob Knight and Eddie Sutton, and contributors Eddie Einhorn and Joe Vancisin. It is the sixth class inducted into the National Collegiate Basketball Hall of Fame, which was established in 2006.

Sampson, a 7-4 center, was a three-time National and Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year during his four years (1980-83) in the Virginia program. He was a four-time All-America selection, earned three consecutive Rupp Trophies and Naismith Awards, and two consecutive John R. Wooden Awards and Eastman Awards.

With Sampson in the program, the Cavaliers won the 1980 National Invitation Tournament (NIT) Championship and participated in three consecutive NCAA Tournaments (1981-83), reaching the Final Four in 1981. Virginia compiled an overall record of 112-23 with Sampson on the team and was ranked in the Top 10 by The Associated Press for 49 consecutive weeks.

Sampson scored 2,228 points during his UVa career and also totaled 1,511 rebounds, 899 field goals and 462 blocked shots. He is the Cavaliers' career leader in rebounds, field goals and blocked shots, and ranks fourth on UVa's career scoring list.

Following his four-year collegiate career, Sampson was selected by the Houston Rockets as the NBA's number-one draft choice in 1983 and went on to earn NBA Rookie of the Year honors. He participated in three NBA All-Star games and was MVP of the NBA All-Star Game in 1985.

During his nine-season NBA career, he helped lead Houston to the 1986 NBA Finals and later played for the Golden State Warriors, Sacramento Kings and Washington Bullets.

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting

The Virginia Tech game should be a big one in terms of recruit attendance. For starters, a large number of the University of Virginia 2012 class commitments are expected to be at Scott Stadium on Saturday. Most of Virginia's class will be there. I wouldn't be surprised to see a top remaining 2012 target or two there as well, and some 2013 class standouts will be on hand too. Surely, it'll be a big day recruiting-wise, adding to what is already a big game for the Virginia football program.

Check back with TheSabre on Friday for an update on those prospects expected to make the trek to Charlottesville on Saturday.

After this past weekend, only four recruits from Virginia's 2012 class have games left to play. They are: OL Andre Miles-Redmond, CB C.J. Moore, RB Kye Morgan and DE/TE Max Valles. Morgan has only one game left to play, and it's this Thursday when Franklin (Somerset, N.J.) meets Piscataway in a Thanksgiving Day contest. Franklin has been eliminated from the playoffs.

Miles-Redmond, Moore and Valles are all trying to help their respective teams capture state championship glory. Read more on these and other Virginia commits in the latest "Week In Review," which is now up on the Good Ol Blog.

Also, EDGE subscribers can read more on top defensive end recruit Mike Moore in the latest "Notes" segment, posted last Friday. Moore, one of UVa's most highly rated recruits in the 2012 class, looks to help the Cavaliers add another highly rated recruit to the class. That recruit is Good Counsel (Olney, MD) standout wide receiver Stefon Diggs, who plans on revealing his final seven schools next Tuesday, Nov. 29 (his birthday). Virginia is a serious contender for this big-time playmaker ... we'll see just how serious next week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Commit Notes: Updates On Moore, Cooper
Image: Michael MooreUniversity of Virginia 2012 class recruits Michael Moore and Anthony Cooper took some time this week to discuss their senior seasons, Virginia's success, future position, and more in this edition of "Notes." Both players have shown why they are so highly regarded with outstanding gridiron performances in 2011.

Tobey Impressing New Coach
Image: Mike TobeyUniversity of Virginia 2012 signee Mike Tobey attended Don Bosco Prep in New Jersey for the first two years of his high school career. He moved on to the Hotchkiss School in Connecticut for his junior school before deciding to return to the Garden State for his fourth and final year on the high school level. The 6'11", 230-pound center is finishing out his prep career at Blair Academy (Blairstown, N.J.), a school no stranger to sending prospects to the college level.

Virginia Upsets No. 3 Tennessee

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia senior forward Chelsea Shine scored 18 points, including a key basket in overtime, and the UVa women's basketball team stunned turnover-prone No. 3 Tennessee, 69-64, on Sunday. The Cavaliers (4-0) came into the game allowing just over 42 points a game under first-year coach Joanne Boyle, and dictated the pace against a Lady Vols team averaging 90.5 points.

Taber Spani led the Lady Vols (2-1) with 22 points, including a 3-pointer 59 seconds into overtime that gave Tennessee a 61-58 lead, but the Cavaliers scored the next 11 points, the crowd at John Paul Jones Arena getting more excited with each basket. China Crosby had 13 points and Ataira Franklin 12 for Virginia, which beat Tennessee for just the third time in 16 games. Lexie Gerson and Ariana Moorer each scored 10.

It was the first road game for Tennessee since coach Pat Summitt announced in the offseason that she has been diagnosed with early onset dementia. She received a warm welcome when she came out onto the floor just before the game.

FUMA's Pasztor Commits

Fork Union Military Academy offensive lineman Austin Pasztor made an official visit to UVa this past weekend. The 6-6, 310-pound prospect had an excellent official visit experience and, earlier today, gave a verbal commitment to head coach Al Groh, according to The Daily Progress and other reports. Pasztor becomes Virginia's 15th verbal commitment for the 2008 recruiting class. He is the fourth prospect projected to play on the offensive line.

A native of Langton, Ontario, Canada, Pasztor was discovered by Fork Union postgraduate head coach John Shuman in August, when Fork Union scrimmaged against the Canadian National team. Pasztor decided to come to Fork Union and, even though he is classified as a true senior, played for Coach Shuman's postgraduate squad this season. He played well, starting every game at left tackle.

The Sunday Sampler 2011 - FSU
In The Sunday Sampler article after the Indiana game, I took a closer look at a pair of late-half drives that led to Virginia touchdowns in that 34-31 win. With another last-gasp drive playing a key role in the exciting 14-13 win against Florida State, it makes sense this week to take a closer look at the Cavaliers' game-winning touchdown march in Tallahassee.

Hoos Grab Dramatic Win At FSU
Image: Mike RoccoVirginia had never won in Tallahassee. Until now. Not that it was easy. In one of the most dramatic conclusions in UVa history, the Cavaliers scored the go-ahead touchdown in the final two minutes and then held on through a nerve-rattling final 76 seconds to upset No. 25 Florida State on Saturday, 14-13. Just the third win ever in the state of Florida for the program, Virginia improves to 8-3 and, more importantly, 5-2 in league play, which sets up a showdown with rival Virginia Tech next weekend for the ACC's Coastal Division title and a spot in the conference's championship game.

Virginia Downs Drexel In Paradise Jam
Defensively, the Virginia men's basketball team has opened the season with a stingy attitude. Very stingy. Drexel became the latest team to stumble against the curmudgeonly Cavaliers on Saturday afternoon in the Paradise Jam Tournament in the Virgin Islands. Virginia allowed just 25.9% shooting for the game and smothered the Dragons from beginning to end in a 49-35 victory.

TCU Topples UVa In Paradise Jam
Image: Coach Tony BennettThere's something about November tournament openers away from Charlottesville that doesn't suit the Virginia men's basketball team. For the third straight season, after all, the Cavaliers dropped the first tourney game away from home. Texas Christian became the latest team to topple the Hoos in this format as it squeezed out a 57-55 win Friday in the Paradise Jam.

Florida State Watch List
Image: Kevin ParksWhen replaying the Florida State-Miami film, one thing jumped out immediately. Speed. Players on both teams were flying all over the place from the opening kickoff. For the Seminoles, that speed was especially evident on defense where the front four get up field quickly and the linebackers cover ground better than any group the Hoos have seen this season. The receivers on offense can get downfield in a flash too. Let's take a closer look at this week's matchup in the Florida State Watch List.

Game Preview 2011: FSU
On national television on a Thursday night in late October, Virginia surprised a lot of viewers with a 28-21 win at Miami. It was just the second victory ever in the state of Florida for the program. Can that build some confidence for the Hoos as they travel to Florida State? The Cavaliers are 0-8 all-time in Tallahassee.

Tailgating With Chefhoo - FSU
Every once in a while, you just have to ignore your diet plans and splurge on some really tasty food. I mean, how often does UVa get to play under the lights on national television? We all look for an excuse to eat what we want, so let's use the "it only happens once in a blue moon" excuse and fry up some tasty morsels from the Florida Panhandle and surrounding areas.

Wahoos Wear Down Winthrop
Image: Mike ScottVirginia struggled from 3-point range for most of the night, but set a new record at the free throw line to dispatch visiting Winthrop on Tuesday, 69-48. The Cavaliers made 19 of 19 free throws in the 21-point win, eclipsing the previous program record for most free throws in a perfect game. UVa made all 16 attempts in a 64-60 loss to South Carolina on Jan. 8, 1965.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2011 ... Duke
As we said last week, this was Duke week, crazy as that sounds to say. Now, Duke is in the rearview mirror, both this season and in the standings ... which is as it should be. Breaking this game down is going to be a pleasure. Here are "10 Things I Learned" from the 31-21 victory against the Blue Devils.

Greg's Game Report 2011: Duke
Image: Jake SnyderAs the 2011 season as progressed we have seen the Cavaliers do things that championship teams do. The Hoos are 2-0 in November, won games when they were the decided underdog, won on the road against good teams and bad, and responded to tough losses with victories. They have stepped up at critical times defensively, responded with scoring drives when needed and put teams away with the running game late. Duke is certainly not the caliber of opponent Virginia will face in its final two regular season games, but Saturday the Cavaliers proved they could win against a decent team when not playing their best. That's something else quality teams do. Let's look at it more closely in Greg's Game Report.
