UVa Begins Accepting Bowl Ticket Requests

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The Virginia athletics department announced Monday it is accepting requests for football bowl game tickets. The Cavaliers became eligible to participate in a bowl for the first time since 2007 on Saturday when they won at Maryland 31-13 for their sixth victory of the season.

It is not expected that bowl invitations will be extended until Sunday, Dec. 4, after selections are announced for the Bowl Championship Series, due to the Atlantic Coast Conference's bowl agreements. It would mark the 18th time in the history of the UVa football program the Cavaliers will compete in a bowl game.

All fans are encouraged to order bowl tickets from the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office. Each bowl game has a minimum number of tickets the participating schools must purchase. Only tickets purchased through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office will count towards the minimum number UVa must purchase. In addition, purchasing tickets through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office ensures Cavalier fans are seated together at the game.

Bowl game ticket requests are now being accepted from donors, football season ticket holders and the general public (including alumni) until the priority deadline of Dec. 7. Customers will need to provide a credit card (MasterCard, Visa, American Express or Discover) to place an order but will not be charged until the actual bowl selection is determined. Student tickets will be sold beginning Monday, Dec. 5 at 9 a.m. through the SHOTS ticket request system until the designated student section is sold out. Priority for ticket requests and seating will be given first to Virginia Athletics Foundation donors based on priority points, second to season ticket holders on a date received basis and then to the general public on a date received basis.

A Bowl Central website is linked to the front page of VirginiaSports.com to provide updates as information regarding UVa's bowl invitation becomes available. A list of all of the ACC's bowl partners is included with direct links to the various bowl games' official websites. The ACC's bowl selection process is also available at Bowl Central. Fans can make their bowl ticket request online at VirginiaSports.com by logging into their online account or through the Virginia Athletics Ticket Office in Bryant Hall at Scott Stadium. The ticket office is open Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. until 5 p.m. for in-person or telephone purchases. Telephone purchases can be made by calling 1-800-542-UVA1 (8821) or locally at 434-924-UVA1 (8821).

This Week In Recruiting

Wednesday marks the beginning of Division 1 Men's Basketball's Early Signing Period. The University of Virginia has verbal commitments from four prospects: Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD) guard/forward Justin Anderson, Fishburne Military Academy point guard Teven Jones, Milton (GA) forward Evan Nolte and Blair Academy (N.J.) center Mike Tobey.

Virginia's class is currently ranked no. 18 in the nation by ESPN.com, which rates three of the four commitments in its Top 100. Anderson is the headliner at no. 61 in the nation per ESPN, followed by Nolte (no. 71) and Tobey (no. 77).

TheSabre.com will have coverage and analysis on UVa's 2012 class.

On the football front, I'll have an update up on Lake Taylor (Norfolk, VA) safety/wide receiver Mike Tyson. Tyson, who is most seriously considering the Hoos as well as Penn State (offers from both), guided the Titans to a 9-1 regular season record and a No. 2 seed in the Eastern Region, Division 5 playoffs. Lake Taylor will face Great Bridge this week.

In this latest EDGE update, Tyson dishes on his senior season and talks recruiting.

Later this week, I'll have more on the expected visitors for this coming weekend's game against Duke.

As always, be sure to check out the Good Ol Blog for the "Week In Review." Demeitre Brim (outside linebacker recruit), Maurice Canady (cornerback recruit), Tyrell Chavis (defensive tackle recruit) and Matt Johns (quarterback recruit) in particular had big games in wins for their respective teams.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an Edge subscription, please check out the Sabre Edge Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an Edge subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Nolte Set To Sign With Hoos

Next Wednesday, which is the first day of Division 1 men's basketball's Early Signing Period, the Milton (Alpharetta, GA) senior will make his commitment to Virginia official.

Prince Reflects On College Visits
So far this fall, Patrick Henry (Roanoke, VA) junior quarterback David Prince has scored verbal scholarship offers from Virginia Tech and the University of Virginia. He followed up with unofficial visits to both schools, visiting Tech for its win over Miami and UVa for the Cavaliers' victory over Georgia Tech.

   News, Notes, and Fan Discussion
Basketball Season Begins!

With all the excitement surrounding the 6-3 football team, it's easy to forget that basketball season starts this week! The Virginia men's basketball team opens its season this Sunday (Nov. 13) at 2 p.m. vs. South Carolina State. The Hoos follow that contest up with four games from Nov. 15-21. UVa hosts Winthrop before facing TCU and two more opponents in the Virgin Islands as part of the U.S. Virgin Islands Paradise Jam. The Winthrop game is set to be televised on RSN (Regional Sports Network).

Keep up with the Cavaliers on TheSabre.com's schedule page.

The women's basketball team, fresh off a 69-57 exhibition win against Alaska Anchorage, opens its season this week too. The first year for coach Joanne Boyle and the Hoos begins on Friday in a home game with Appalachian State.

McLeod National Defensive Back of the Week

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia senior strong safety Rodney McLeod was named College Football Performance Awards' (CFPA) National Defensive Back of the Week. In front of his hometown crowd on Saturday, the Oxon Hill, Md., native had three interceptions and a team-best seven tackles in UVa's 31-13 ACC triumph at Maryland. McLeod is one of four players in the nation to record three INTs in a game in 2011, the most by any player this season.

McLeod's three INTs tie a program record with six others and he becomes the first Cavalier to accomplish the feat since Anthony Poindexter did so in 1996 against NC State. Two of McLeod's INTs were on fourth down plays in the fourth quarter as Maryland tried to make up ground on UVa. His first INT of the game set up UVa's second TD drive of the third quarter, pushing the Cavaliers' lead to 15 points, 28-13.

Blog Banter: A Workout Warrior

From The Good Ol Blog ...

Thompson Brown, the latest high school senior to commit to the University of Virginia, has no problem working hard in the weight room.

"His work ethic is exemplary," St. Christopher's head coach Michael Turner said. "He broke his wrist right before the season last year and we caught him sneaking into the weight room when he should've been resting (laughs)."

At 6-4, 225 pounds, Brown is a phenomenal athlete as well. At the Charlotte Under Armour Combine earlier this year, he posted a 4.59-second 40, a 4.29-second shuttle and a 32.5-inch vertical leap. After starting for the Saints as a freshman and sophomore, Brown was limited as a junior due to the broken wrist and a hamstring injury. When healthy, he starts at defensive end and running back.

Brown earned an offer after attending UVa's one-day camp. Turner believes that Virginia offered as a defensive end. He committed to the Cavaliers over offers from Boston College, Duke, Maryland and Ohio.

UVa now has 16 commitments in the 2011 class. Stay tuned for more on the EDGE.

The Sunday Sampler 2011 - Maryland
Image: Mike LondonThe magic number is six. All the way back on Aug. 2, I wrote those words about the Virginia football team. Well, Virginia, there are bowls this holiday season. More importantly, however, getting the magic sixth win should awaken the Cavalier faithful. Many, many Hoo fans have been waiting for the football program to show them something before making an invested return to the fandom. UVa accomplished that and more with its 31-13 win at Maryland on Saturday.

Hoos Stomp Terps To Earn Bowl Eligibility
The Virginia football team opened the second half at Maryland on Saturday like a team on a mission. The defense shut down the hosts and the offense repeatedly ripped through the Terrapins en route to a dominant 31-13 win. The victory snapped a 13-game November losing streak and ended a three-season drought of bowl eligibility in one fell swoop.

Maryland Watch List
The implications for this week's Virginia game have been discussed all week long. Drilling deeper into the matchup, the key factor may be the running game. That's an area where Virginia has talent and confidence. The Maryland Watch List points out some more of the key analysis areas for the game.

Game Preview 2011: Maryland
Image: Cam JohnsonThe script this week is fairly simple for the Cavaliers. For the second time this season, they grabbed an unexpected ACC win against a favored foe. The first time that happened against then undefeated Georgia Tech, the Hoos took the field the next week with a sluggish offensive performance and a 28-14 loss to NC State. This time, Virginia is coming off a 28-21 victory at Miami. The task is to avoid another lackluster outing in the follow-up performance at Maryland.

Tailgating With Chefhoo - Maryland
For the Maryland game, I was tempted to something Jersey related, I really was. However, Maryland is famous for blue crabs and what self-respecting chef wouldn't want to highlight the tastiest crustacean in all the land? I wish we played more than one team from Maryland, because I could write about blue crabs every single week.

Q&A - Freshman Malcolm Brogdon
Image: Malcolm BrogdonThe University of Virginia's most decorated freshman, guard Malcolm Brogdon, earned Atlanta Journal-Constitution/Georgia Sportswriters Association Group AA Player of the Year honors as a junior and AJC All-Division Player of the Year honors his senior season. Primarily playing the two -guard position but also seeing time at the point, the 6'5", 215-pound Brogdon averaged close to 26 points, almost 13 rebounds, 3.6 assists and 2.3 steals per game his senior year. TheSabre.com caught up with Brogdon as practice opened for a Q&A.

Terps, Not Bowls Have Hoos' Attention
For a fan base starving for postseason play, it's hard to avoid the hottest topic of conversation since Thursday night's 28-21 win at Miami. The Hoos, after all, are one win away from bowl eligibility. And naturally fans are talking about it. They're looking up the ACC's bowl affiliations. They're playing out scenarios for the season's final month and using phrases like "control their own destiny". But don't expect the team to join in any time soon. The coaches and players are focused on the Maryland Terrapins.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2011 ... Miami
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsFeel like you are riding a bit of a rollercoaster right now? Welcome to the wonderful world of rebuilding a football program. This week, however, coming off a road win at Miami, we get to see the world from the top of the coaster. That's a great view for the weekly "10 Things I Learned" column. So what can we take from the win over the Hurricanes?
