   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting

Thomas Dale (Chester, VA) junior offensive tackle Zachary Rhodes has no offers yet but is on the University of Virginia's recruiting radar and is drawing attention from several major FBS programs. The 6'5", 270-pound junior has enjoyed a solid season for the Knights, who came up with a big win this past weekend over Meadowbrook. Rhodes attended UVa's Elite Prospect Day this past summer, and he has attended a few Virginia home football games this fall. Read more on the standout junior in an upcoming EDGE article.

I'll also have more on another in-state 2013 class standout, Patrick Henry (Roanoke, VA) athlete David Prince. Prince has been offered by Virginia and Virginia Tech and recently took in games at both schools. In an upcoming EDGE update, Prince, an elusive and fast prospect projected as a receiver or defensive back on the college level, discusses those experiences and more.

Stay tuned for more with senior quarterback Matt Johns, a Virginia commit, in the latest "Season Diary." Johns and his Central Bucks South (Warrington, PA) teammates scored a big win this past week to remain in playoff contention.

The latest "Week In Review" is now up on the Good Ol Blog. Varina (VA) quarterback/cornerback Maurice Canady and Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) wide receiver/safety Anthony Cooper had big games in wins for their respective teams. Canady, who is being recruited by UVa to play cornerback, threw three touchdown passes for the Blue Devils (7-1). Cooper, an all-state performer last season as a junior, had more than 100 yards of offense and two touchdowns in Bayside's win over district foe Cox.

Read about how the rest of the class fared on the gridiron this past week in the "Week In Review."

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Season Diary: CB South Controls Playoff Destiny
Image: Matt JohnsQuarterback Matt Johns and his Central Bucks South (Warrington, PA) teammates rebounded from a tough 44-42 loss to Souderton with a 29-point win over Hatboro-Horsham. The Titans now own all any team can ask for when it comes to earning a playoff berth. With two regular season games remaining, they control their own destiny.

2013 Philly Guard Visits UVa
Two weeks ago, University of Virginia head coach Tony Bennett traveled up to St. Joseph's Prep (Philadelphia, PA) to see junior guard Steve Vasturia. The 6'4", 180-pound prospect returned the favor this past weekend, when he traveled to UVa for an unofficial visit.

Fun With Halloween

Since today is Halloween, TheSabre.com thought it would be fun to give you a few potential Hoo-related costumes for fun in SabreMail:

  • Grandpa: Grab a pair of glasses, a cane, and a Mike Scott jersey to be the oldest Cavalier on your block. Alternative: Sammy Zeglinski.
  • Minni me: Have a son? Both of you grab a Chase Minnifield jersey and go as Dr. Evil and Minni me.
  • Superman: For this one, you just need a cape and a Perry Jones jersey. His teammates have nicknamed Jones 'Superman' after all. You could also go as alter ego Clark Kent, but UVa offensive coordinator Bill Lazor will look more authentic in the role with his postgame spectacles and slicked hair.
  • The Book of Eli: Grow your beard to a stubble, put on some dark sunglasses, a trench coat, a backpack, and a No. 1 Ocean Lakes jersey ... then deliver the goods to be recruit Eli Harold from Ocean Lakes High School.

Have some silly costume ideas? Share yours on the message boards!

Cavaliers Defeat Terrapins 2-0 in ACC Quarterfinal

Virginia Athletics Media Relations Official Release

The No. 5 Virginia women's soccer team advanced to the semifinals of the ACC Tournament with a 2-0 victory over No. 16 Maryland in a quarterfinal match Sunday at Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers won their sixth straight game to improve to 14-3-2.

"I am pleased with the result, as our team did what they needed to do today," said head coach Steve Swanson. "We pressed the ball well, took advantage of our depth and moved the ball well at times. That first goal was important as it gave us some confidence and allowed us to dictate the tempo of the game. It would have been nice to get the second one a little earlier, but I thought we had command of the game most of the second half. Overall, it was a good performance."

Virginia posted its fifth consecutive shutout, its longest streak since six straight shutouts in 2009. Chantel Jones (Midlothian, Va.) made one save to earn her 44th career shutout, tying the NCAA record. Jones, who has 11 shutouts this season, equaled the mark set by Erin Guthrie of Rutgers (2006-09).

"I am happy about the shutout," said Swanson. "Chantel Jones made history today for herself and for the University of Virginia. To tie that record is a great accomplishment and we couldn't be prouder of her."

Virginia will meet Florida State in the semifinals of the ACC Tournament on Friday night in Cary, N.C. Game time at WakeMed Soccer Park is set for 7:30 p.m., and game will be broadcast online by ESPN3. The first ACC semifinal begins at 5:30 p.m. on Friday in Cary as Duke plays Wake Forest. The winners will meet in the final on Sunday at 1 p.m.

Greg's Game Report 2011: Miami
Image: Bill LazorVirginia's offense dialed up the big play against the Hurricanes striking for touchdown passes of 78, 37 and 53 yards and the Cavalier defense put a Halloween hex on the Miami running game as Virginia claimed its first ACC road win in eight games. The Hoos are now one win away from bowl eligibility and even more interesting - they are not out of the Coastal Division race. Let's take a closer look at the 28-21 win in Greg's Game Report.

The Sunday Sampler 2011 - Miami
Image: Perry JonesThere's an old saying about "keeping up with the Joneses" where the gist is the desire to match your neighbors' success. For the Virginia football team, the meaning is much more positive. After all, it's good for anyone in the program to try to keep up with junior captain Perry Jones. From his work ethic to his leadership to his on-field abilities, the Hoos are better because he's wearing orange and blue.

Cavs Capture Road Win At Miami
Image: Mike LondonThe Virginia football team has been anything but predictable in October. An overtime nailbiter against Idaho, a steamroller win against Georgia Tech, and a disappointing setback against NC State opened the month. Then in the Cavaliers' first Thursday night game since 2006, they led wire to wire in a 28-21 victory over Miami, which had won three of its previous four games.

Miami Watch List
So far this season, the Virginia football team has followed a pattern. Two wins, two losses, two wins. The Hoos will try to break the trend and avoid back-to-back losses in this week's ACC game against Miami. In the Miami Watch List are a couple of items that could influence the outcome in Florida in 2011.

The Art Of Being Out Of Shape
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie GarciaNow, it may seem crazy, but it's true - to be an elite athlete (an elite runner), you have to learn how to take a break. A long, glorious, don't-even-think-about-running break. Just once a year, but still. To some people, it may seem absurd - why would you want to voluntarily get out of shape? Trust me. When you compete eight or nine months straight over the year, plus training the other three to four months, taking two weeks off is barely a blip in the grand scheme of things.

Game Preview 2011: Miami
Image: Max Milien High hopes checkered the Charlottesville landscape last week. Fresh off an upset of previously unbeaten Georgia Tech, the Hoos had a chance to win back-to-back ACC games for the first time in two years. They had an opportunity to move to within one game of bowl eligibility for the first time since 2008. Unfortunately, however, Virginia couldn't get the job done and fell 28-14 to NC State. Can teams mimic NC State's approach and lock down the Hoos?

Tailgating With Chefhoo - Miami
Anyone who's spent time in Miami knows what a phenomenally diverse city it is. Latin influences show in the architecture, culture and, of course, the food. Sure there are some very nice restaurants that show off this diversity, but there are few things better than a local joint that serves really great ethnic food. Anyone who's had a great Cuban Sandwich knows how much of a treat this can be. Here's a version that won't take up too much time in the middle of a work week for a Thursday night game, but still delivers great authentic flavors.

Photo Gallery: NC State 28, Virginia 14
Image: Tim SmithUVa receiver Tim Smith hauled in a 60-yard touchdown reception, but NC State won a defensive battle with Virginia, 28-14. Check out some of your favorite Hoos like Perry Jones, Chase Minnifield, and Smith in action or see if your fan photo is in this 72-image gallery of the Cavaliers' latest contest.

Greg's Game Report 2011: NC State
Image: Michael RoccoThe Georgia Tech game was a perfect example of the potential of the 2011 Cavalier football team when all three phase of the game play at a solid, sustained level for four quarters. Saturday against NC State was a prime example of what can happen when one operation doesn't carry its weight. Virginia's defense and special teams did enough to win against NCSU - the offense, however, was AWOL resulting in the Hoos' 28-14 loss to the Wolfpack.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2011 ... NC State
Going into the NC State game, UVa was 4-2 and good feelings abounded. Coming out of the NCSU game, UVa is 4-3 and uncertainty seems to reign. What a difference a week can make, eh? Let's dive into "10 Things I Learned" after the 28-14 loss to the Wolfpack.

Hoos Shift Strategy On QBs
Image: David WatfordAfter a rough outing Saturday when the offense generated just 249 yards against NC State, the already fiercely debated quarterback rotation conversation climbed another decibel. The Cavaliers have been substituting reserve David Watford for starter Michael Rocco at predetermined times in most games this season but when the quarterbacks combined for 125 yards on 11-of-35 passing against the Wolfpack, the approach drew additional criticism from outside observers. The Virginia coaching staff decided this weekend to change the substitution plan.
