Don't Miss The Sabre's Special Series

Image: Beyond The Lawn with Clint SintimImage: Beyond The Lawn with Tyler WilsonImage: Beyond The Lawn with Stephanie Marie Garcia

TheSabre.com debuted a new series in August called "Beyond The Lawn" that is found exclusively through TheSabre.com EDGE subscription service. "Beyond The Lawn" is a 12-month series that follows three Virginia Cavaliers through a year as a professional athlete. Baseball's Tyler Wilson (Baltimore Orioles), track and field's Stephanie Marie Garcia (U.S. Olympic hopeful), and football's Clint Sintim (New York Giants) share their experiences throughout the year.

Most recently, Sintim checked in to talk about the challenge of ACL injuries (Beyond The Lawn With Clint Sintim: Staying Strong Through Knee Injuries):

"Rehabbing the first time was a little difficult because of the lockout and you would like the same familiarity with the doctors who did the surgery and a second eye to tell you this is what you should be doing. I was fortunate enough to be able to do some of the rehab at UVa and to have good doctors at UVa and Kelli Pugh, my trainer at UVa, who I trusted during my tenure here. They were there to help me out and help me with what I needed be doing, how it should be done, and how I could get it stronger. It was the best out of a bad situation. I would have loved to be up in New York, but I didn't mind that I had to go to Charlottesville. It gave me a chance to work out with guys, Chris Long and a lot of other guys that I played ball with. It worked out fine for me."

This Week In Recruiting

The Good Ol Blog's "Week In Review" is now up. Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive end/wide receiver Eli Harold, one of Virginia's top recruits in the 2012 class, was one of the top performers this past week. Cavalier fans can read about his performance in the Dolphins' victory over Green Run and how the rest of the 2012 class performed on the gridiron this past week, so be sure to check it out.

Buford (GA) has a bye week this week. Cornerback/wide receiver recruit C.J. Moore and fullback/linebacker Nathan Staub plan to spend their weekends in Charlottesville, with Moore on an unofficial visit and Staub on an official trip.

Moore, a 5'9", 165-pound senior with blazing speed, committed to Mike London and company this summer. Staub, a senior, remains uncommitted and is considering the Hoos, Cal, Harvard and UNC. He has taken an official visit to Chapel Hill already, so this weekend's trip will be the second official visit of his recruitment. We'll check in with both prospects before and after the visit for comments.

As always, TheSabre.com will have more information on weekend visitors on Friday, so stay tuned.

This week, we'll check in with quarterback Matt Johns for the latest on his senior season. The 6'4", 195-pound prospect guided Central Bucks South (PA) to a win this past weekend.

Cavalier fans also can read more on top 2013 tight end target Adam Breneman, who was in Charlottesville for the Southern Miss game. The 6'5", 225-pound junior has been offered by the Cavaliers and many, many others throughout the country.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Catching Up With Versatile Commit Kyle Dockins
Image: Kyle DockinsUniversity of Virginia 2012 class recruit Kyle Dockins traveled to Charlottesville last Saturday to watch his future team take on the Idaho Vandals. He left Scott Stadium a little wet - water and Gatorade were flying following the dramatic 21-20 overtime win - but feeling good about the commitment he made in July. A big reason for Dockins' excitement is the Cavalier coaching staff.

Patrick Henry Punter Accepts UVa Walk-On Offer
A senior, Patrick Henry (Roanoke, VA) punter Nick Conte had never played football before this season. But the University of Virginia took notice of his talents during camp this past summer, and just a few weeks ago Mike London offered the 6'3", 200-pound prospect a preferred walk-on opportunity. Conte accepted.

Blog Banter: Film Festival Features Movie With Sene

From TheSabre.com's Good Ol Blog

Assane SeneLike movies and Virginia basketball? Well, here's some good news. The Virginia Film Festival features a documentary with Cavalier center Assane Sene this year. Elevate highlights four players including Sene from the SEEDS Academy (learn more at www.seedproject.org) in Dakar, Senegal where young basketball players from across West Africa gather for a program that focuses on academics and athletic training. Players, like Sene, who stand out earn full scholarships to preparatory high schools in the United States. That step could create opportunities for college.

Elevate is scheduled for Friday, Nov. 4 at 6:45 p.m. at the Regal 3 theater on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville (click here for more info) as part of the annual festival. Sene and Kandioura Drame will have a discussion at the screening. Fans have discussed the movie on the EDGE message board.

So is Sene a movie star?

"I'm not a movie star yet. I'm more like a student and a basketball player for now," a smiling Sene said at Virginia's men’s basketball media day on Thursday. "It's a documentary they did about me and some other players from Senegal. We went to a school in Senegal called SEEDS. They made a documentary trying to help and support the [SEEDS program] and go forward like I'm helping this program to go forward. I'm not a movie star yet, but I've heard that a lot. People are like 'You're a movie star' and I'm like not yet."

For now? Not yet? Doesn't sound like the door is shut on the bright lights of Hollywood.

"Not yet because I don't know. I don't know exactly what's going to happen tomorrow or next year or next month. I don't really know so that's why I use the yet," Sene said laughing.

London Takes Helm, Names Four Assistants

Last Monday afternoon, Mike London was introduced as Virginia's new head football coach. He is the 39th coach in program history.

London, who spent the two previous seasons at the University of Richmond, worked at Virginia for two previous stints, most recently as the defensive coordinator. At UR, London led the Spiders to a 24-5 record and the Football Championship Series National Championship in 2008.

Shortly after taking the top spot in the program, London announced the addition of four assistant coaches to his staff. He retained current assistant coach Anthony Poindexter from the previous staff. London also added Vincent Brown, Jeff Hanson and Mike Faragalli, who all coached with him at Richmond. London will also make an announcement regarding Bob Price's status with the UVa football program following further evaluation. Price and Poindexter had overseen the administrative duties for the football program during the period of the coaching search.

Additional coaching news has been scarce, though the rumor mill continues to swirl with potential coordinator candidates. The most popular names out there currently are Jim Reid and Bill Musgrave, both of which have validity as potential candidates according to our sources. Reid, a linebacker coach for the Miami Dolphins that worked as the head coach of Richmond and VMI previously, would be up for the defensive coordinator role while Musgrave, current quarterbacks coach for the Atlanta Falcons and former UVa assistant, would be in line for the offensive coordinator slot. One other name that has popped up regularly in the rumor mill is Chris Beatty, an assistant coach at West Virginia. Sabre sources over the weekend indicated that Beatty likely would not be joining the UVa staff despite some indications earlier in the week that he would be on his way to Charlottesville.

London will announce additional assistant coaches and specific position assignments at a future date.

Beyond The Lawn With Clint Sintim: Staying Strong Through Knee Injuries
Image: Beyond The Lawn with Clint Sintim Tearing an ACL twice within one year is frustrating. The first time whenever you have a catastrophic injury like that, you always wondering 'What now?' It was just one of those things. A freak accident. The second time I tore my ACL, I was really excited about the opportunity to play and the potential to even start this year. It was just one of those things where I guess this year just wasn't meant to be.

Hoos Embrace Growing Expectations
Image: Coach Tony BennettThere's no way to ignore it. There are higher expectations for the Virginia men's basketball team this season. Experience and a growing talent pool usually lead to those sorts of things. So while the NCAA Tournament is a goal every season, the Cavaliers concede that this is their best opportunity to go dancing in Tony Bennett's tenure.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2011 ... Idaho
Image: Mike RoccoAgainst a team that it should beat, that game this weekend was far closer than it should have been, with an early lead fading and the home team having to find a way to pull out a win far later than really should have been necessary ... but enough about the Chicago Bears' win over the Panthers. We are here to talk about UVa's win over the Idaho Vandals. Now, remind me again, how did that game go?

Greg's Game Report 2011: Idaho
Image: Rodney McLeodWins are a wonderful thing no matter how aesthetically pleasing the performance. But there was far more that gives cause for concern emanating from Saturday's overtime win over the Idaho Vandals than offering signs of hope. Maybe the most alarming observation is that five games into the season there seem to be elements of the team that are regressing rather improving. Let's take a closer look in Greg's Game Report.
