Rosters Announced for Orange & Blue World Series

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The Virginia baseball team starts its annual Orange & Blue World Series at 6 p.m. Tuesday. Head coach Brian O'Connor unveiled the rosters Friday for each team for the intrasquad competition.

Admission is free for each game in the Orange and Blue World Series. Fans should enter on the first baseline side of the stadium via Lannigan Way. Free parking will be available in the University Hall and John Paul Jones Arena lots. Concession and merchandise stands will be open for all fall games.

Prior to Game 4 of the series on Oct. 14, Virginia will hold a ceremony to celebrate the 2011 team. UVa will issue the team's ACC Championship and College World Series rings at this time.

The Orange and Blue World Series will consist of a pair of two-game series as well as a Game 5. If a given team wins both games of either series, the other set of games automatically becomes a series that is based on run differential, provided it's a split series, to allow the trailing team to still win a series.

Each team is encouraged to score as many runs as possible and not worry about running the score up. All pitchers are required to appear at least one time in games 2-4.

Pitch counts will be in effect for all pitchers. In Game 1, no pitcher may pitch more than five innings or 75 pitches. In games 2-4, no pitcher may toss more than five innings or 90 pitches. In Game 5, all pitchers are eligible to play, but five-inning and 90-pitch limits apply.

The Cavaliers return 20 letterwinners from the 2011 squad which won a school-record 56 games, earned the ACC Championship and advanced to the program's second College World Series in three years. Ten highly-touted freshmen and three junior-college transfers also enter the mix.

Orange & Blue World Series Schedule

  • Game 1: Tuesday, Oct. 4, 6 p.m.
  • Game 2: Monday, Oct. 10, 6 p.m.
  • Game 3: Wednesday, Oct. 12, 6 p.m.
  • Game 4: Friday, Oct. 14, 6 p.m. (Ring Ceremony)
  • Game 5: Sunday, Oct. 16, 4 p.m.

This Week In Recruiting

Landstown (Virginia Beach, VA) tight end/wide receiver Kyle Dockins and Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, VA) linebacker Kwontie Moore were in Charlottesville on Saturday for the Idaho game. TheSabre.com caught up with Dockins, who was fresh off his team's big Beach District win over Bayside. The 6'4", 215-pound senior recalled being swept into the Cavaliers locker room following the dramatic overtime win over Idaho.

"It was crazy. I actually got my clothes all wet," Dockins said with a laugh. "Coach London was screaming. All the players were going crazy."

Dockins further discusses the experience at Scott Stadium on Saturday and much more in an EDGE article coming out this week. I also hope to have more with Kwontie Moore, who is one of UVa's top defensive commits in the 2012 class.

The two commits weren't the only top prospects in Charlottesville this past weekend. Also there, TheSabre.com confirmed, was Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) junior tailback Taquan "Smoke" Mizzell. Mizzell is considering several major FBS offers, including one from Virginia. We hope to check in with the talented prospect for his thoughts on the Cavaliers program and more.

Also in football recruiting, the latest "Strategy Session" article is out now on the EDGE. Most of the feature focuses on 2013, including a full scholarship breakdown, analysis of what the biggest needs are in the class, and more.

TheSabre.com readers should also be sure to check out the Good Ol Blog for the latest "Week In Review," a look at how all of UVa's 2012 commits performed on the gridiron this past weekend. "Week In Review" will appear every Sunday or Monday throughout the high school football season.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Strategy Session: A Look Ahead To 2013
With a bye week coming up, the UVa coaches can get in a little extra recruiting time this week. With 2012 mostly finished, 2013 class prospects are becoming the priority. In this latest edition of "Strategy Session," we take a look ahead to 2013 class recruiting and where the coaches may focus their efforts.

Johns Reflects On First UVa Game Experience
Image: Matt JohnsCentral Bucks South (Warrington, PA) quarterback Matt Johns, one of 24 high school seniors committed to the University of Virginia football program, had never seen a game at Scott Stadium until this past Saturday. Despite Virginia's 6-point loss to Southern Miss, the day was a good one.

Cavs Eye Blue Ridge PF/C
The University of Virginia played host to 6'9", 245-pound Blue Ridge School (St. George, VA) senior Kyprianos "Paris" Maragkos last Friday, and the power forward/center prospect left with a good impression.

New arena plans approved by BOV

New Arena Plan
The University of Virginia Board of Visitors approved the architectural plans this week for a new area to be built on the parking lot across the street from University Hall, between Copeley Hill and Emmet Street.

Plans are for a $128 million, 15,076-seat arena to be built by May 2006. The arena will contain many of the architectural designs that appear at the newly renovated Scott Stadium, like the pergola for example. The arena will contain 20 luxury suites that may lease for around $40,000 to $50,000 per year. The architect of this project, Bob Moje of VMDO, is the same architect of the Scott Stadium renovation project.

Terry Holland Inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame

Former Virginia head basketball coach and Athletic Director Terry Holland was inducted into the North Carolina Sports Hall of Fame Wednesday. Holland, a native of Clinton, N.C., is currently a special assistant to President John Casteen at UVa, and has overseen the new basketball arena project since resigning from his duties as Athletic Director, a position he held for six years.

Holland also served as UVa's head basketball coach from 1974 to 1990, and was the winningest basketball coach in the history of the program. Holland coached during the Ralph Sampson era, when Virginia held the number one ranking in the country off and on for several years and took the program to a level of prominence it hasn't achieved since.

The Sunday Sampler 2011 - Idaho
Image: Dominique TerrellWhen the Virginia football program signed one of the nation's top 25 recruiting classes in February, a lot of fans - hungry for success of any kind with the Hoos - immediately started to dream of what those youngsters could bring to the table this fall. Through five games, the true freshmen have piled up opportunities as UVa has posted a 3-2 record. The results, not surprisingly, have been mixed. Look no further than Saturday's 21-20 overtime win against Idaho for proof.

Hoos Escape With Win Over Idaho
Image: Dominique TerrellAs the temperature dropped at Scott Stadium on Saturday evening, things on the field suddenly had the feel of one of those horror movies on TV. The script: Demons of the past come back to haunt everyone in sight and leave the town quivering with fear of future misfortunes. The only thing missing was some guy with a hook or a hockey mask. For the Virginia football team, however, this movie didn't end in disaster like some Hoo features of the past. While it had plenty of tense and scary moments down the stretch, the Cavaliers held off Idaho in overtime to win 21-20 in front of 39,287 in attendance.

Verica, Dolce Pursue Pro Careers
Image: John Kevin-Dolce and Marc VericaFormer Virginia football players Marc Verica and John-Kevin Dolce have decided to continue their football careers. Verica signed with Les Cougars in Saint-Ouen-l'Aumone, France, northwest of Paris. Dolce has signed with the Indoor Football League's Tri Cities Fever in Kennewick, Washington.

Game Preview 2011: Idaho
Image: Chase MinnifieldAfter starting the season 2-0, Virginia has dropped back-to-back games to fall to 2-2 on the season. The Cavaliers wrap up their out-of-conference schedule this week with Idaho (1-3) before a bye week gives them a chance to regroup for ACC play the rest of the way. After a disappointing 30-24 loss to Southern Mississippi, the football team has a shot at a 3-1 out-of-conference mark with a win this week.

Tailgating With Chefhoo - Idaho
Idaho. This one's been circled on the Chef's calendar for a few months. I could do an entire season's menu with potatoes. I absolutely love them. I've picked a couple of my favorite potato salads and one of my favorite main dishes to go with them, beef brisket. Yeah, brisket is more of a Texas thing, but I can't wait until our TCU game next year.

Greg's Game Report 2011: Southern Miss
Throughout the first four games of the season typically at least one operation, offense, defense or special teams has performed at a minimum, above average. For the first time this season, however, all three operations suffered numerous breakdowns and execution failures against Southern Mississippi and no unit graded out with a championship level grade. Let's look at Greg's Game Report.

Hill Continues Incredible Impact
Image: Will HillWhen Will Hill sits down with the media Monday afternoon at the John Paul Jones Arena, it's hard not to think of Clark Kent. The studious spectacles and mild-mannered demeanor during the interview session are just reminiscent of the fictional reporter of Superman fame. Of course, Dr. David Banner may be the better comparison for football purposes.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2011 ... Southern Miss
Image: David WatfordSome losses are more painful than others, and this loss certainly qualified (particularly if one includes in the discussion how Michael Rocco's ribs feel this morning). The funny thing for me, however, was that the game was not as hard as many to breakdown, even if it was tough to swallow. Many of the problems on the day were obvious, after all, and other things that were not as obvious were, at the very least, interesting to me.
