UVa Retires Big E's Jersey

Elton Brown

At halftime of Saturday's game with Southern Miss, Virginia retired former offensive lineman Elton Brown's No. 61 jersey. Big E is the 17th former UVa player to have his jersey retired.

Brown started 39 games in four seasons at Virginia. As a senior, he was named a consensus first-team All-American (third offensive lineman in school history to receive that honor). Brown was also selected as the ACC's top blocker in both 2003 and 2004 by the conference's head coaches. He graduated from UVa in 2005.

TheSabre.com's Mike Ingalls was on the field for the halftime ceremonies and snapped the included photo of Brown (click the photo for a bigger version).

You can also check out a video story about Elton Brown from our Charlottesville media partners CBS 19: Brown Honored With Retired Jersey.

This Week In Recruiting

Virginia’s football program now has 24 commitments in its 2012 class after Canaan Severin, a 6'3", 205-pound wide receiver prospect out of Worcester Academy (Worcester, MA), announced for the Hoos over Boston College and Penn State last Monday. Severin gives Mike London another talented playmaker in a class that already featured 4-star defensive end Eli Harold, 4-star defensive end Michael Moore, and 4-star linebacker Kwontie Moore. Severin is rated a 4-star recruit by Rivals.com.

The 2012 class could grow before Signing Day rolls around in February. Coach London said recently that there are three or four spots available, so potentially the staff could sign 28 in a class that originally was thought would be average in terms of size (18-20).

This week, we'll have another "Strategy Session" piece examining the remaining targets in this class while also taking a look ahead to 2013, including how many spots may be available in that class and which positions the staff may target.

Three 2012 commits were in attendance for Virginia's home game against Southern Miss. Michael Moore is no stranger to contests in Scott Stadium, but Saturday marked the first ever Virginia football home game experience for quarterback Matt Johns and athlete Max Valles. I caught up with Johns on Sunday night, and the Pennsylvania native enjoyed another great time in Charlottesville.

"It gets better every time I go back," said Johns, who toured the Grounds on an unofficial visit and attended camp (where he was offered) earlier this year.

Stay tuned for more from Johns and Valles on their experiences in Charlottesville.

On the basketball front, we will check in with Blue Ridge School (VA) head coach Bill Ramsey for the latest on senior power forward/center prospect Kyprianos Maragkos, who was slated to take an unofficial visit to Virginia last Friday. The 6'9", 245-pound prospect, a native of Greece, had not been offered by the Hoos prior to the visit, but he did have an offer from Old Dominion.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Coaches, Academics Weighed Heavily In WR's Decision
Image: Canaan SeverinFor Canaan Severin, the feeling of knowing where he wanted to go to college came last week. "I kind of knew [UVa] was the place for me. I just felt it was time to commit," the Worcester Academy (Worcester, MA) senior said. Aside from family and coaches, for the most part Severin kept the decision to himself until yesterday at 1 p.m., when he announced in front of classmates where he would spend the next four or five years or his life.

Alexander Joins Staff At HSC

Hampden-Sydney Athletics, Official Release

Head coach Dee Vick has recently announced the addition of former NBA and UVA star Cory Alexander to the basketball coaching staff. Alexander comes to the Tiger staff after a ten year professional career that included time with the San Antonio Spurs, Denver Nuggets, Orlando Magic and Charlotte Bobcats.

"We are thrilled to have Cory Alexander join our program," said Vick. "His experiences with basketball have prepared him for a successful college coaching career, and we are exited he can begin that journey here at Hampden-Sydney. He has played under the best coaches in the world and has earned the opportunity to line up face to face with the world's best players; this combination will enhance his ability to make a meaningful impact on our program."

A native of Waynesboro, Virginia, Alexander attended basketball power Oak Hill Academy where he was named a McDonald's High School All-American and Parade Magazine First Team All-American as a senior in 1991. In addition, he was Mr. Basketball of Virginia and the Gatorade Virginia High School Player of the Year.

At the University of Virginia, he was an All-ACC point guard who holds the University's freshman records for assists and three pointers while helping the Cavaliers to a 1992 NIT Championship. As a sophomore, Alexander guided UVA to an NCAA Sweet 16 appearance, was named to the First Team All-ACC Tournament Team and earned the University of Virginia Cavalier of the Year award. As a senior in 1995, Alexander was a team captain and again named the Cavalier of the Year while guiding his team to an NCAA Elite Eight finish.

Professionally, Alexander was the 29th pick in the 1995 NBA Draft and selected by the San Antonio Spurs. He has also spent time playing for Virtus Roma in the Italian League and Euroleague, as well as the Roanoke Dazzle where he earned Second Team All-NBDL honors in 2003 and First Team All-NBDL honors in 2004 when he averaged 16.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and a league-high 6.1 assists and 2.0 steals-per-game. Most recently, he played with the Charlotte Bobcats in 2005.

Currently, Alexander assists with Raycom Sports and the ACC Network as well as Comcast SportsNet providing color commentary and studio analysis. He also runs the Cory Alexander Basketball School in Richmond - started in 1995. He has also coached at the Greater Richmond Summer Pro-Am and the Boo Williams Summer League.

"I am extremely excited to join the Hampden-Sydney community," Alexander stated. "I have learned a tremendous amount about the history and tradition at Hampden-Sydney and am thankful that President Howard and Richard Epperson have supported Coach Vick in adding me to the staff. I truly believe that the Tiger basketball program is headed in a positive direction under Coach Vick, and I look forward to being a part of it."

UVa Grabs First Win Vs. UNC

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Caroline Miller's goal in the 105th minute gave No. 14 Virginia a 1-0 double-overtime win over No. 5 North Carolina on Sunday afternoon in front of 1,418 fans at Fetzer Field and a nationwide television audience on ESPNU. It was the Cavaliers' first ever win over the Tar Heels in 38 meetings between the teams (1-35-2). Virginia improves to 8-2-1 overall (2-1 ACC) with the victory, while North Carolina falls to 6-2-0 overall (1-1 ACC).

"That win is as good as it gets," said head coach Steve Swanson. "I am just so proud of the players, they played terrific. We were prepared and did all the little things during the week to get ready for this game. It was great to see them get rewarded in the end. We had a couple chances to win it in the second half and in the first overtime, but we kept on pushing and got the goal in the second overtime. This is a great ACC road win for us."

On the first shot of the second overtime, the Cavaliers scored the game-winner. Morgan Brian played a ball behind the defense that found the run of Miller, who fired it into the corner of the net for her team-leading 10th goal of the season.

North Carolina outshot Virginia 11-10 for the game, marking the first time this season the Cavaliers had been outshot. UNC also had a 9-2 corner kick edge. Chantel Jones made two saves for the Cavaliers, posting her fifth shutout of the season and extending her school record to 38 career shutouts. Adelaide Gay and Sieloff made three and two saves respectively for the Tar Heels.

The Cavaliers continue their four-game road trip on Thursday as they visit No. 4 Duke. Game time at Koskinen Stadium in Durham is 8 p.m., and the game will be televised by the ACC Regional Sports Networks (Comcast SportsNet in Virginia).

Football recruiting ...

Jameel Sewell
Jameel Sewell became the 20th commitment of the 2005 recruiting class when he chose UVa over Maryland on Monday of this week. Sewell, a 6-3, 200 pound quarterback out of Hermitage High School, provides the Cavaliers with a skilled drop-back passer who possesses a lot of potential. He has received offers from UVa, Maryland, UNC, Cincinnati and Syracuse.

With Sewell's commitment, Virginia now has a drop-back passer to go along with Gretna QB Vic Hall, who is considered a dual-threat signal caller. UVa's recruitment of quarterbacks is likely finished for the 2005 class.

Phoebus tailback Elan Lewis has 3 schools on the top of his list right now.Virginia Tech, UVa and Maryland. Phoebus Head Coach Bill Dee indicated that Lewis may make his first official visit to Virginia Tech for the weekend of September 11th. Nothing has been set.

UVa appears on the outside looking in for Red Bank (NJ) defensive tackle Kade Weston. Weston mentioned Florida and Georgia as possible visit destinations and candidly admitted that UVa is "on the border" with him.

Basketball recruiting ...

In other news, UVa men's basketball has offered DeMatha Catholic (MD) shooting guard Mamadi Diane and Don Bosco Prep (NJ) power forward Tyrell Biggs. DeMatha Catholic Head Coach Mike Jones says Diane has six offers, most of which are from ACC schools. Biggs is drawing ACC and Big East interest. Both have the Cavaliers in their respective top 10 lists right now.

The Sunday Sampler 2011 - Southern Miss
Image: DefenseWhen it looked back at the game film, the Virginia football team must have lamented its third down defense during Saturday's 30-24 loss to Southern Mississippi. The Golden Eagles converted 10 of 21 chances on third down in their win and nine of those conversions came on scoring drives. The Cavaliers' inability to get off the field proved costly as they fell to 2-2 on the season.

Golden Eagles Take Down Hoos
Image: David Watford Before the 2011 schedule started, most observers pointed to a one-month stretch of Virginia's season as the critical part of the calendar for the team. Unfortunately, it's not off to a good start. UVa opened a four-game home stand with a disappointing 30-24 defeat against Southern Miss on Saturday. The Hoos committed turnovers on offense, gave up some key big plays on defense, and after playing the bamboozler on special teams last season, they got duped by a gutsy fake punt that changed the tenor of the day too.

Southern Miss Watch List
Image: Mike RoccoFor the second time in three weeks the Virginia football team faces the challenge of a no-huddle, spread-based attack. The Hoos handled it fairly well at Indiana, but still had to stage a late-game comeback to win 34-31. There's a marked difference between the Hoosiers and this week's opponent Southern Mississippi, though. The biggest? IU has been to nine bowl games in its history, while USM has been to nine straight bowl games and 13 in the last 14 years. In other words, the Hoos had better be on their toes this week as a program familiar with winning visits Scott Stadium for the first time. Here are a few things to monitor in the Southern Miss Watch List.

Game Preview 2011: Southern Miss
Image: Brent Urban This week's contest marks the beginning of a four-game home stand for the Cavaliers. It's a four-game stretch that very well could determine the overall success of the season as the Hoos chase at least a 6-6 record and bowl eligibility. Among the next four games are two non-conference contests with Southern Miss and Idaho, two games most observers picked as needed wins if Virginia is going to reach the bowl plateau. That makes the Southern Miss game this week arguably one of the biggest of the season for UVa.

Beyond the Lawn With Stephanie Marie Garcia Top Five Things I Learned At Worlds
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie GarciaIt's been a long time since I was a freshman, a newbie, a fresh face in anything. Having spent five years as an elite UVa athlete, I was making NCAA Championships and winning ACC races from my first year on and I had experience racing and placing at levels before some of my teammates. But this summer I had the opportunity to go back to the basics and be the new kid on the block as I ventured into the professional world of track and field. It wasn't my first time in a USA uniform, but it was my first World Championship experience. I didn't know what to expect.

Tailgating With Chefhoo - Southern Miss
Most regions of the country are known for a style of food. But I have my favorites and the Gulf Coast happens to be one of those places. And while Hattiesburg, home of this week's opponent Southern Mississippi, isn't technically on the Gulf Coast or in Cajun Country, it's close enough to share a couple of my favorite recipes ... oyster shooters and jambalaya.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2011 ... UNC
Image: Max MilienAfter playing a very good FCS team in week one and a Big Ten opponent on the road in week two, UVa took another step up in competition this week against UNC on the road. Unfortunately, Virginia was not up to the increased challenge this week, dropping its first game of the season. The task before us is breaking down the "why" of the loss, as well as looking a little deeper into the 2011 Hoos at this point in the season.

Greg's Game Report 2011: UNC
Image: Austin PasztorCoach Mike London's comment said it all. Virginia needs to score when the opportunity presents itself and stop the opposition from scoring. Sorry for the obvious analysis but it's not much simpler than that. Stopping teams from scoring begins with stopping big plays in the running game and passing game. While Bill Lazor's group is showing promise, there are reasons for concern - the biggest being an ability to finish drives. Let's take a closer look in Greg's Game Report.

Hoos Eye More Offensive Punch
Virginia quarterback Michael Rocco put together a solid performance Saturday at North Carolina. In some ways, it even can be considered a breakout performance as the sophomore passed for a career-high 287 yards and his first touchdown of the season plus rushed for another score. In others, it highlights that there's still a long way to go for the young signal caller after he threw two late interceptions and had a miscue with center Anthony Mihota that led to a lost fumble. As Rocco progresses, the Cavaliers are looking to open things up more offensively. That topic captured much of the attention at Monday's weekly press meeting as the Hoos prepare for Southern Miss on Saturday at 3:30 p.m.
