   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting

TheSabre.com will have full coverage of this Saturday's season opener. This includes the recruiting front, and we'll take a look at those prospects expected to be on hand to see the Cavaliers take on William & Mary.

Much of the 2012 class is finished, but at least one uncommitted prospect - Stratford (Houston, TX) standout Kelvin Rainey - is expected to make an official visit to UVa this weekend. The 6'0", 175-pound rising senior plays safety in high school but projects as a cornerback on the college level. Virginia is recruiting him as a cornerback.

"Kelvin has great acceleration and coverage ability," Stratford head coach Eliot Allen told TheSabre.com in an August 8 EDGE article.

Virginia also had offered Rainey's defensive backfield teammate, safety A.J. Justice, but Justice recently committed to SMU. SMU has offered Rainey as well.

Early this week we'll check in with a couple of Virginia 2012 commits, quarterback Matt Johns and offensive guard Andre Miles-Redmond. Johns, a 6'4", 195-pound quarterback out of Central Bucks South H.S. in Pennsylvania, and Miles-Redmond, a 6'4", 260-pound offensive guard out of Hermitage H.S. (Richmond, VA), talk about their upcoming 2011 seasons and much more.

Staying at Hermitage High, we also check in with top 2013 running back Derrick Green, who has five offers that include one from the University of Virginia. Green is one of the state's top prospects in the 2013 class.

On the basketball front, 5'10", 165-pound Boys Latin School (Philadelphia, PA) point guard Maurice Watson Jr. will announce his college choice on Wednesday at 10 a.m. UVa is listed among the finalists; however, at least as of late last week, our sources indicated that the Cavaliers had not offered the standout rising senior. Boston University, Hofstra, La Salle and Niagara are the other finalists according to Philly.com.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

2013 Profile: QB Bucky Hodges
Bucky Hodges admittedly was a bit surprised when he got the nod as Salem's (Virginia Beach, VA) starting quarterback with four games left in his freshman season. "My first game [as a starter] was Homecoming," Hodges recalled. "I was real nervous. The coaches kept saying they were going to play me, but I didn't know they were going to throw me in the Homecoming game. From there I got better each game."

Madison Jones Still On UVa's Radar
Image: Madison JonesRavenscroft (Raleigh, N.C.) point guard Madison Jones enjoyed a successful summer, picking up offers from Charlotte, Drake, Seton Hall and Tulsa to go along with the offer he previously had from the University of Richmond. Georgia, ODU, Tennessee and Virginia are expressing serious interest in the 6'1", 160-pound senior, who spoke with Cavaliers primary recruiter Jason Williford recently.

Phillips And Brothers Nominated For Courage Honor

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia tight end Colter Phillips and his brothers, Andrew, Paul and Willy are nominated for the America's Choice Honor for Courage in Sports, Intersport announced today. The America's Choice Honor, wholly determined by fan voting, recognizes individuals that have overcome monumental challenges to achieve greatness in the world of sports. The winner will be announced on a one-hour "Courage in Sports" special airing at 5 p.m. ET Nov. 13 on CBS.

Each week for six weeks, two inspirational sports stories will be featured on the Courage in Sports Facebook page (www.Facebook.com/CourageInSports). The top weekly vote getter will proceed to the finals, which runs Oct. 3 through Oct. 16.

The Phillips brothers - all standout football players - showed incredible resilience and courage during and after their father Bill Phillips' death in the fall of 2010. Just 13 years old at the time, Willy, one of four crash survivors, assisted the other passengers and flagged down help - all with a severely fractured ankle and broken nose.

Coming from a family deep in athletic prowess, the three elder Phillips boys were all playing Division I college football at the time of the crash - Andrew, then a Stanford offensive lineman; Colter, a tight end for Virginia; and Paul, a tight end for Indiana. The brothers continued to thrive on and off the field in dedication to their late father. Andrew was named 2010 All Pac-10 Honorable Mention; Colter was recently named to the 2011 John Mackey Award preseason watch list; redshirt freshman Paul received scout team player of the year honors in 2010; and Willy continues to fight through rehabilitation from the crash. He can walk, bicycle and swim, but his injured left foot still prevents him from running.

The other week two nominee is Jimmy Butler, Chicago Bulls forward and former Marquette University standout, who courageously overcame a troubled childhood to succeed on the basketball court.

For more about the Phillips brothers visit www.Facebook.com/CourageInSports. Fans can vote as often as they would like and can share their vote with Facebook friends. Week two voting opened today and ends on Sunday, Sept. 4 at 11:59 p.m. ET.

Issue No. 127 - Feb. 27, 2004

Two more wins for men's hoops, courtesy of Todd Billet

The Virginia men's basketball team won two more games at the buzzer this week. In both contests, the late-game hero was again senior guard Todd Billet. In UVa's 58-55 win over Clemson on the road last weekend, Billet drained a 3-pointer with 16 seconds remaining to clinch UVa's first ACC road win of the year. The last second 3-pointer was Billet's second game-winning shot in three games. He helped the Hoos knock off 15th-ranked Georgia Tech just a week prior with a similar shot.

Billet worked another miracle last Tuesday when he drained a 3-pointer with just more than 10 seconds remaining against North Carolina. Billet's 3 gave the Hoos a 74-72 advantage. Tough defense on Carolina's last possession caused an errant final shot that fell way short of the mark, giving the Hoos their third late-game victory in the last four contests.

Virginia now stands at 15-10 overall and 5-9 in the ACC with just two regular season games remaining. The Hoos have all but secured a place in this year's NIT. If they can continue their winning ways over the next few games, an NCAA berth may become a reality. Just a couple of weeks ago, it was unthinkable that the Cavaliers would have any shot at making the Big Dance. With wins over No. 15 Georgia Tech and No. 12 North Carolina, a win over No. 11 Wake Forest at home next Tuesday would make the selection committee take notice. Still, the Hoos may have to win at least one more game to get in - either the game against Maryland in College Park or a first round ACC Tournament game. Coach Gillen's Cavaliers have yet to win an ACC Tournament game, so a win there would show improvement in the eyes of the selection committee and quite possibly save the coach's job for another season.

Hoo Preview 2011: The Schedule
Once again it's time for the annual schedule breakdown. There are six winnable games on the schedule in my estimation and with some progress from the run defense and the quarterback position, I can see as many as eight possible wins. Not likely, but possible. Let's wrap up TheSabre.com's month-long "Hoo Preview" with a closer look at the 2011 Virginia football schedule.

Hoo Preview 2011: JHoo's 10 Things
Image: Mike RoccoI constantly am amazed by how quickly the first game arrives, in a sense. For the longest time, it feels like football never is going to get here ... and then bam, practices start, the depth chart starts to come together, and the first game is upon us. In a way, the entire Mike London era has been a similar whirlwind but here we are, on the cusp of season number two. And as with season number one, there are a lot of questions that will be answered as this year plays out. Here are 10 on which I am focused. ... some obvious, some obscure.

Hoo Preview 2011: Reynolds Ready To Go
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsIn the coach Mike London's first season, LaRoy Reynolds had no trouble distinguishing himself last fall. Reynolds led the team in tackles, participated in nearly 600 plays, and was second on the team behind only Cam Johnson in tackles for a loss. Reynolds' success last season coupled with the plethora of returning defensive players may bode well for the 2011 defense.

Hoo Preview 2011: LBs Hope For Strong Year
The first few names Virginia fans can list off at linebacker are familiar ones. Steve Greer, LaRoy Reynolds, Aaron Taliaferro, Ausar Walcott - they all should ring bell. After all most of the players near the top of the depth chart as the 2011 season approaches have started at least a half dozen games as a Cavalier. Will all of that experience equal improvement? That's the big question facing the linebackers as the Hoos enter the second year of the 4-3 defense and coach Mike London's tenure.

Hoo Preview 2011: Young QBs Emerge
Image: Mike RoccoQuarterback. It's the glamour position. It generates as much message board chatter as any position in sports. It's a lightning rod for criticism - everybody's favorite player, as the saying goes, is the back-up quarterback. And affection - who's usually the first player going to Disney World after winning the Super Bowl after all. So when the quarterback position changes hands, a regular occurrence in college football, everyone talks about it. Such has been the case at Virginia as the 2011 season approaches kickoff.

The Anatomy Of A Steeplechase Fall
Image: Beyond the Lawn with Stephanie Marie GarciaIt's a devastating thing, to fall in a race. On a good day, you'll limp off the track with an injured pride and likely an injured limb, whether that be a knee, a shoulder, an ankle. On a bad day, you'll find all your hopes and dreams dashed - the fall could mean the end of a season, the loss of a medal, the shattered culmination of all you've worked towards for an entire year. But on an even worse day, falling in a race can only mean one thing: losing your spot on Team USA for the Olympics.

Hoo Preview 2011: Secondary Seeks Success
Image: Chase MinnifieldThe Virginia secondary features a barbershop quartet of experience with a whole gang of players trying to join the group. If the senior foursome can somehow harmonize with the talented youth in the orange and blue, then the defensive backs could make some sweet music in 2011 as the defense and secondary try to improve on last season's struggles that saw the Cavaliers rank in the ACC's bottom tier in total and scoring defense.
