The Virginia men's soccer team will have its final tuneup for the 2011 regular season at 6 p.m. Monday when it plays the Orange & Blue Scrimmage at Klockner Stadium. There is no admission charge for the scrimmage.

Ranked 14th in the preseason Top Drawer Soccer rankings and 22nd in the preseason NSCAA poll, the Cavaliers kick off their regular season at 5 p.m. Friday against West Virginia in the ACC/BIG EAST Challenge in Germantown, Md. The match will be contested at the Maryland SoccerPlex.

   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting

DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) rising senior point guard James Robinson has made his decision. Unfortunately for the Hoos, the 6'3", 200-pound prospect has decided to take his game to the Big East, verbally committing to Pittsburgh over Miami, Notre Dame and Virginia this past Sunday.

Robinson's decision means that point guard continues to be the big need going forward for Tony Bennett's program. Houston, Texas, point L.J. Rose presumably remains a possibility, though most don't consider Virginia a favorite at this point. TheSabre.com hopes to check in with the standout rising senior soon for more. Other possibilities remain as well. North Carolina rising senior point guard Madison Jones has not been offered by Virginia but could be a player the staff follows closely this coming season.

We'll see what happens from now until next spring, but without question the attention is turning sharply to 2013, where it looks like point guard will be a must-get for the staff.

Keeping with the 2012 basketball recruiting class, I'll have an article out soon on 6'10", 240-pound center Ryan Rosburg. Rosburg, who attends Marquette High School in Chesterfield, Missouri, lists UVa in his final five along with Missouri, Missouri State, Tennessee and Virginia Tech. All five schools have offered.

Rosburg, who was offered by UVa in late July, made an official visit to Missouri State this past weekend and tentatively plans to go to Missouri this weekend. Tennessee is scheduled for Labor Day weekend.

On the football recruiting front, I'll take a closer look this week at those in-state rising juniors UVa has already offered. While the staff was racking up the commitments this summer, they were also busy getting offers out to some of the state's top 2013 class prospects. I profiled one - Liberty (Bealeton, VA) DL/OL Wyatt Teller - last week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Cavs In The Running For Another At Buford
Image: C.J. MooreThe Virginia football program has dipped into Buford High School (Buford, GA) for 2012 class cornerback C.J. Moore, but the Cavaliers are in on Wolves rising senior fullback/linebacker Nathan Staub as well. TheSabre.com caught up with the speedy Moore for reflection on the commitment he made in July, and also with Staub for the latest on his recruitment.

Severin Visits UVa
Accompanied by his father, Worcester Academy (Worcester, MA) product Canaan Severin made an unofficial visit to the University of Virginia last Friday. The 6'3", 210-pound wide receiver prospect reflected on the experience and discussed what he learned about where he stands in terms of Virginia's scholarship situation.

Selenski, Krzysik Earn ACC Honors
Official UVa Media Relations News Releases

Virginia's Paige Selenski (Shavertown, Pa.) was named the 2008 Atlantic Coast Conference field hockey Freshman of the Year, the league office announced Sunday following the championship game of the conference tournament. She is just the third player in program history to receive the honor and is the first since Meredith Elwell in 1996.

"It is a fantastic recognition to Paige and the University of Virginia," said Virginia mentor Michele Madison. "She is an outstanding talent among UVa's great first-year class and no one works harder in practice. Her game gets better and better as she is a great listener and always accepts her role on the team.

Selenksi, a forward, led Virginia in scoring with 17 goals and tied for a team-best with nine assists for 43 points this season. She played in all 21 games and tallied a team-high 97 shots. Additionally, six of her goals were game-winners.

Meanwhile on the soccer field, Virginia senior defender Nikki Krzysik was named the 2008 ACC Defensive Player of the Year and five Cavaliers earned All-ACC honors as the conference announced its women's soccer honors on Tuesday.

"Our entire program is extremely proud of the players who earned 2008 All-ACC honors, especially Nikki's distinction as the Defensive Player of the Year," said head coach Steve Swanson. "To have as many players as we had represented on both squads is a tribute to every member of our team and how hard they all have worked throughout the regular season. We are looking forward to the ACC tournament this week."

Krzysik becomes the third Cavalier to be named ACC Defensive Player of the Year since the league split the player of the year award into an offensive and defensive honor in 2004. Sarah Huffman was the inaugural Defensive Player of the Year in 2004 and Becky Sauerbrunn took the honor last season.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Hoo Preview 2011: Walker A DB Factor
Image: Rijo WalkerAny good defense needs to have five or six defensive backs ready to go if it plans to throw different looks, particularly with its specialty packages, at opponents. Fortunately, Virginia has plenty of options in the secondary thanks to some young and talented players wearing orange and blue. That group of young guns includes Rijo Walker, a 757 product who is ready to join the rotation after playing as a true freshman in 2010.

Hoo Preview 2011: Phillips Back At TE
At 6'6' and 245 pounds, Virginia tight end Colter Phillips stands as an imposing physical specimen. His conversely diplomatic and articulate speech renders him infinitely more intriguing. The Sabre caught up with Colter Phillips to ask a few questions about the upcoming season as the 2011 Hoo Preview rolls on.

Hoo Preview 2011: No Worries At Tight End
Image: Paul FreedmanThe offensive side of the Virginia roster features many recognizable names all over the place. That's certainly true at tight end. The depth chart's top three players all have in-game experience and at least one touchdown catch on their list of achievements. So when it comes to run-blocking or catching passes, UVa fans know what to expect from Colter Phillips, Paul Freedman, and Jeremiah Mathis as the leaders at tight end this season.

Hoo Preview 2011: Receivers Seem Strong
The Virginia receiving corps has a lot of good things going for it. Experience. Playmaking potential. Depth. Speed. Two beloved Hoo quarterbacks teaching the ropes. Yes, on paper at least, the Cavaliers appear to have a promising blend of ingredients at receiver. If the group delivers a tasty final meal in terms of production, 2011 could be a great year for the unit.

Hoo Preview 2011: True Freshmen
Image: David WatfordAnthony Harris, Darius Jennings, Demetrious Nicholson, Brandon Phelps, Daquan Romero and David Watford ... six members of the University of Virginia's heralded 2011 class. All six, according to a recent write-up on VirginiaSports.com, are serious contenders for playing time this coming season. TheSabre.com caught up with all six on the last two days of open practice for their thoughts on a variety of topics, including adjusting to the college game, adjusting to college life, the coaches, expectations for the coming season, and, in the case of Romero and Watford, early enrollment.

Hoo Preview 2011: Smith On Comeback Trail
Image: Tim SmithAs Virginia opened fall training camp this month, receiver Tim Smith made an immediate impression. In fact, he went 5 for 5. Yes, when it came to post-practice interviews following open practice sessions, Smith had a perfect record for requests. If he draws as much attention during the 2011 season, that could be very good news for the Cavaliers.
