   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting

Entering April, Virginia football only had one verbal commitment in the 2012 recruiting class. In fact, it wasn't until April 22, when Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL) linebacker/safety Demeitre Brim made his decision, that the Cavaliers secured verbal commitment No. 2. Concern isn't the right word, but perhaps a little nervousness was creeping in about how the 2012 class would shape out. Having 21 commitments in the fold one week into August was difficult to imagine four months ago, but that's just what has happened.

Mike London and company have been on a tear since May. Top linebacker prospect Kwontie Moore committed that month, and highly recruited prospects such as quarterback Greyson Lambert, defensive end Eli Harold, defensive end Michael Moore, defensive end Courtnye Wynn and wide receiver/safety Anthony Cooper have come into the fold as well over the course of the spring and summer. Harold and Lambert committed to the Hoos last week, and you can read much more on these two players on the EDGE.

So with 21 commits are in the fold, where does Virginia go next? We'll have more on this later this week in a "Strategy Session" feature. We'll look at the numbers, which positions and players the staff may focus on, as well as the job the staff has done in recruiting the offensive and defensive lines.

We'll continue to hit the recruiting trail for updates as well. This week EDGE subscribers can read the latest "Recruiting Notes," which will feature an update from Fork Union Military Academy postgraduate head coach John Shuman, who provides the latest on 2011 signees Adrian Gamble and Kevin Green, as well as info on a pair of Stratford High School (Houston, TX) rising senior defensive backs Virginia has offered. There will also be a check in with previously mentioned Kwontie Moore.

Speaking of Norfolk Christian, rising senior wide receiver Mario Nixon attended practice on Saturday. Perhaps there is no significance to this, but perhaps there is. Nixon, a 6'5", 210-pound wide receiver and safety, has committed to Virginia Tech. Moore said he is working on his teammate, but to this point Nixon has remained solid in his original decision. I hope to reach him this week for the latest on his status.

One of the top 2013 class signal callers in the state, Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) standout Ryan Burns, was also spotted at Virginia's practice on Saturday. We hope to have more with the 6'5", 220-pound prospect later this week. We also plan to check in with Fork Union Military Academy Prep quarterback Christian Hackenberg, another rising junior. Both Burns and Hackenberg have been offered by the Cavaliers.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

QB Greyson Lambert Headed To UVa
One week ago, Wayne County (Jesup, GA) rising senior quarterback Greyson Lambert made his first ever visit to the University of Virginia. Feeling so good about the experience, he wanted to commit on the spot. Lambert decided to wait, but it was just a matter of time -- one week, in fact -- before he would become the 21st rising high school senior to commit to the Hoos.

Kye Morgan Set For UVa
The Virginia football program continues to roll on the recruiting front, today picking up 2012 class commitment number 20. Franklin (Somerset, N.J.) running back/defensive back Kye Morgan is the latest pledge, choosing UVa over offers from Boston College, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Illinois, Rutgers and Temple.

4-Star Eli Harold Heading To UVa
Image: Eli HaroldToday, on the day of his late mother's birthday, Eli Harold announced that he would attend the University of Virginia. The 6'4", 220-pound defensive end prospect spent a good amount of the press conference remembering his mother, who may have passed but continues to inspire. "I want to keep my head up, keep moving forward, and never give up," Harold said. "That's why I chose to do this on this day, August 2nd. She would've been 57 years old."

Starsia Wins Dan Spillett Grand Master's Award

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia head men's lacrosse coach Dom Starsia was honored with the 2011 Dan Spillett Grand Master's Award at the Lake Placid Summit Classic over the weekend. The Lake Placid Summit honors Dan Spillett, a long-time participant in the tournament by making an annual award that recognizes Dan's many years of determination and perseverance in the face of complex personal challenges and obstacles. Dan finally succumbed to his illness in 2005, and this award, which was established in 2004, is presented annually to the Grand Master's player that best exemplifies Dan's tenacity, determination, perseverance and positive attitude both on and off the field during the tournament.

"I am deeply moved to have received the Dan Spillett Award," said Starsia. "Dan was a good friend and a great teammate. His untimely and premature passing touched everyone who knew him. I feel blessed to have stayed in close contact with his wife Julie and their children. To have received this award in his name, presented by Dave White, one of my closest friends, makes this a moment I will long cherish. I want to thank the folks at US Lacrosse, George Leveille and everyone involved with the organization of the Lake Placid Tournament."

Starsia has been coming to the Lake Placid Summit for 20 years and in 2011 played close defense for the Ultra Legends. Starsia and the Ultra Legends finished 3-1 in the Super Grand Master's division.

The history of the Lake Placid Summit dates back to 1990 when tournament founder Leveille mentioned to Mike DeRossi that he'd like to combine two of his favorite things: lacrosse and Lake Placid, N.Y. The idea was born and with limited resources, eight teams traveled to Lake Placid in the summer of 1990 to compete in the first ever Lake Placid Summit Lacrosse Tournament. ??Over the next couple of years, the word slowly spread across the Northeast and down into the Mid-Atlantic and each year a few new teams would join the line-up. Eventually, the best players in the country, from high school to post collegiate, found themselves competing at the Summit. Now over 150 teams of men and women over various age groups compete at the event during a seven day period every year.

Wright Becomes UVa's All-Time Leading Scorer
UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Monica Wright scored 20 points to pass Dawn Staley as the women's career scoring leader in Virginia history, but No. 23 Virginia lost 61-60 to Maryland on Monday night.

Wright, a preseason All-American and the ACC's Preseason Player of the Year, came into the game needing 16 points to pass Staley's total of 2,135 points. Staley, the best player in school history, played from 1989-92 and was a two-time national player of the year. Hoo Preview 2011: By The Numbers
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsThe Virginia Cavaliers will open their 2011 season at home on Sept. 3 against William & Mary with a chip on their shoulders. The Wahoos' will be eager to avenge their surprising 2009 loss (14-26) to the Tribe. While psychological motivators such as these cannot be quantified, many themes from the Cavaliers' 2010 campaign are epitomized in quantifiable statistics. Here's a look at the numbers.

Hoo Preview 2011: O-Line Features Experience
The offensive line isn't going to be the most exciting position to watch this year - at least not if you're looking for starting position battles and the like. Not by a long shot. The Cavaliers are returning 4 of 5 starters from a unit that was above average last season. This year, the O-Line should remain just that.

Hoo Preview 2011: Moses A Big Talent
Image: Morgan MosesMorgan Moses is a giant of a man. That's been a running joke long before Moses actually arrived on Grounds. Whether that's coach Mike London kidding that Moses blocks out the sun or teammates coining the nicknames Donkey and Shrek for Moses and first-year roommate Kevin Parks, it's something that produces a good-natured smile from everyone. Here's the thing - the 6'6", 350-pound offensive lineman is a giant talent too.

Hoo Preview 2011: The Magic Number
Image: Coach Mike LondonThe magic number is six. The Virginia football program needs to win six games this season. No, it doesn't have to win six games. This isn't some sort of temperature-taking season for hot seat purposes after all. But the program needs to win six games in Coach London's second season. Really, really needs.

Hoo Preview 2011: Take 5
When football season begins in early September, Virginia will face William & Mary at Scott Stadium in a 6 p.m. start. What sort of questions will face the Cavaliers in Mike London's second season at the helm? Who are some of the key faces for the Hoos in 2011? "Take 5" as TheSabre.com covers some of the top themes, names, and more.
