Staley Named To Women's Basketball Hall of Fame

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Former Virginia women's basketball All-American and National Player of the Year Dawn Staley has been named to the Class of 2012 for induction into the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame, the Women's Basketball Hall of Fame announced on Saturday (July 23) during the 2011 WNBA All-Star Game. Joining Staley in the Class of 2012 are Nancy Fahey (coach), Nikki McCray (player), Pam McGee (player), Inge Nissen (player) and Robin Roberts (contributor). Additionally, at halftime of the WNBA All-Star Game, Staley was named one of the top 15 players in the history of the league.

"It's a tremendous honor," Staley said while joining the ABC broadcast crew following the announcement. "I'm going in with great company ... I'm amongst some great, talented people."

Staley, a Philadelphia native and the current head coach at South Carolina, played at Virginia from 1989-1992. She was a three-time Kodak All-American, two-time National Player of the Year and two-time Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year. Staley was named the Most Outstanding Player of the 1991 NCAA Tournament and led UVa to three-consecutive Final Fours from 1990-92. Staley is the only ACC player to record more than 2,000 points, 700 rebounds, 700 assists and 400 steals.

During her WNBA career, Staley was named an All-Star five times and was selected to the WNBA All-Decade Team. A three-time Olympic gold medalist (1996, 2000, 2004), Staley was named the 1994 and 2004 USA Basketball Female Athlete of the Year.

This Week In Recruiting

The commitments keep rolling in for the Virginia football program. Buford (GA) cornerback prospect C.J. Moore verbally committed Sunday night, giving the Hoos three commitments last week and 18 verbal commitments in total in the 2012 class. The 5'10", 165-pound Moore, a class AA second-team all-state selection last season as a junior, is part of a Buford program that has captured four straight AA state championships as it heads into the 2011 season.

The commitment action started last Wednesday with decisions from Blessed Sacrament Huguenot (Powhatan, VA) offensive tackle Augie Conte and Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) wide receiver/safety Anthony Cooper. UVa missed on Conte, who chose Virginia Tech, but scored on Cooper, a 6'0", 180-pound standout who earned first-team all-state honors at wide receiver in 2010. The following day, Landstown (Virginia Beach, VA) tight end/wide receiver Kyle Dockins chose the Cavaliers over Georgia. Dockins, a 6'4", 205-pound prospect, is a real sleeper according to Landstown head coach Tommy Reamon, who coached former Virginia quarterback Aaron Brooks and current Virginia linebacker Aaron Taliaferro.

"The sky is the limit with his potential," Reamon told TheSabre.com last week. "I think UVa has made a steal. He is the sleeper of the entire state. I think I can speak to that because I have sent a lot of players to Virginia and Virginia Tech."

Another Virginia Beach product could well be on the way next week. Tuesday, Aug. 2, is when Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) defensive end Eli Harold is expected to announce from Florida, Penn State and Virginia. UVa is thought to be the likely choice for the 6'4", 220-pound recruit, who is TheSabre.com's No. 2 overall prospect in the 2012 In-State Preseason Top 40. We'll have more on Harold's upcoming announcement this week and plan to be at Ocean Lakes for the press conference next Tuesday.

As mentioned above, Virginia now has 18 commits in this class. We'll have much more in the way of analysis of the class in the coming weeks, including another "Strategy Session," but for now let's take a look at the position breakdown including a few slotting guesses.

  • QB - Matt Johns. No questions here.
  • RB - None
  • WR - Jamall Brown, Anthony Cooper. The Hampton (VA) product worked out at corner as well at a Virginia one-day camp this summer, but wide receiver is where he is being recruited. Cooper makes plays no matter where he has lined up on the high school level, but receiver is where Virginia is recruiting him to play. Adrian Gamble, who signed in the 2011 class, will attend Fork Union and could be part of this class as well. If Gamble enrolls in January of 2013, he could count towards the 2011 class or the 2012 class. If he attends FUMA for a full year, he'll be a 2012 prospect.
  • TE - Kyle Dockins. Dockins could play wide receiver, but he has a great frame and could create real mismatches at tight end.
  • OL - Ryan Doull, Sean Karl, Andre Miles-Redmond, Michael Mooney. There is a chance Miles-Redmond moves to defensive tackle at some point in his Virginia career. He'll start at offensive guard, though. The other three are sure-fire offensive linemen.
  • DT - Tyrell Chavis. Chavis could play on the interior offensive line, but defensive tackle will be his initial spot.
  • DE - Michael Moore, Max Valles, Courtnye Wynn. Moore and Wynn are sure-fire defensive ends, while Valles could play d-end, tight end, or linebacker. I'll slot him at end for now because ultimately I think that's where he is best suited. Very intriguing tight end prospect, though.
  • LB - Demeitre Brim, Mark Hall, Kwontie Moore. Brim feels safety could be a real possibility for him at UVa, but outside linebacker is the likelier possibility in my mind. Hall is a definite outside linebacker in my mind, while Moore is a definite middle linebacker recruit and one of the best players in the state, period.
  • CB - Maurice Canady, C.J. Moore, Wil Wahee. I see Moore as the only sure-fire corner. Canady is a great athlete with potential at wide receiver or even safety, but I like his frame and athleticism at corner. Wahee could play corner or slot receiver, but I think the first look will be at corner.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Jamall Brown Scored The Offer He Wanted
Image: Jamall BrownA dislocated wrist did not end Jamall Brown's junior season entirely. The Hampton High School (Hampton, VA) product, who suffered the injury in the second game of the regular season, still managed to play safety for the Crabbers despite the injury. He was, however, sidelined from playing wide receiver, the position he likely would play on the college level. Without a junior season to showcase his talents on the offensive side of the ball, this summer's camp circuit became all the more important in impressing college coaches.

Anthony Cooper Picks UVa
Image: Anthony CooperAnthony Cooper has committed to the University of Virginia over Tennessee and Vanderbilt. The 6'0", 180-pound rising senior wide receiver/safety, a first-team all-state selection in 2010 and no. 10 in TheSabre.com's Preseason In-State Top 40, announced his decision this afternoon at a press conference at Bayside High School (Virginia Beach, VA).

Dockins Picks The Hoos Over The Dawgs
Image: Kyle DockinsLandstown High School (Virginia Beach, VA) wide receiver/tight end Kyle Dockins announced today that he will attend the University of Virginia. UVa, which scored its second Virginia Beach standout rising senior in as many days, won out over the University of Georgia as well as a handful of others.

Issue No. 88 - May 22, 2003

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne UVA ended the week with a bang, getting a verbal commitment from 5-10, 195 pound William Campbell running back Cedric Peerman. Peerman becomes the second verbal commitment of the 2004 class, joining St. Anne's Belfield defensive tackle Chris Long. Both prospects are ranked in the top 10 overall in the state of Virginia, giving the Cavaliers a great start in in-state recruiting.

As a junior, Peerman rushed for 2,048 yards. He scored 50 total touchdowns. Peerman has the breakaway speed needed for Division I running backs and also possesses great hands, which are necessary to be a running back in Al Groh's system.
