Third Straight Top 10

As mentioned in last week's SabreMail, another successful sports year had Virginia poised for another top 10 finish in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup. On Friday, the final standings became official and UVa earned a third straight top 10 finish. The Cavaliers finished seventh in the final 2010-11 Learfield Sports Directors' Cup competition for Division I schools. That's the second best for the Hoos in the program's 18-year history. It also marks the fourth time the school has posted a top-10 finish, including the third year in a row. Virginia took third last year (school's best finish) and eighth in 2009; UVa was also eighth in 1999.

Virginia has ranked in the top 30 in every year of the competition and is one of just 15 schools to accomplish that feat.

"The manner in which our programs have represented the University of Virginia this year is truly impressive," UVa Athletics Director Craig Littlepage said in a news release. "Earning another top-10 finish in this year's Directors' Cup demonstrates a true team effort, including the work of dedicated coaches, student-athletes and athletics department staff, support from the University administration and faculty, and the generosity of our donors. Winning conference and National Championships are among our department goals and our third consecutive top-10 finish in the Directors' Cup standings reflects our continuing effort regarding our 10-year goals."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia's impressive commitment run continued last week, when the Hoos picked up verbal commitments from a pair of linemen in Sean Karl and Andre Miles-Redmond. Karl, a 6'6", 295-pound offensive line recruit, hails from Eastport-South Manor High School in Manorville, New York. Miles-Redmond, a 6'4", 260-pound prospect out of Hermitage High School (Richmond, VA), is being recruited initially as an offensive lineman but defensive tackle is very much a possibility on the next level.

EDGE subscribers can read comments from Miles-Redmond in an article posted late last week. Stay tuned for much more on Karl this week, including comments from the New York prep star on his decision and analysis on how Virginia's line is shaping out in the 2012 season.

UVa now has 13 commitments in its 2012 football class.

Also this week, we'll profile Glenvar (Salem, VA) rising senior Seth Dooley, who is certainly a "sleeper" prospect to keep an eye on. The 6'5", 225-pound Dooley, a defensive end and tight end, has only one year of high school football experience but has an intriguing skill set. He ran a 4.59-second 40 at one of Virginia's camps last month and is looking to show off his athletic talents once again this Saturday, when he attends Virginia Tech's one-day camp.

Virginia is very interested in Dooley, Glenvar head coach Kevin Clifford said, but at this point no offer has been extended. We'll have a profile article on the rising senior standout out and follow up later this month for more on his recruitment.

On the 2013 front, we'll check in with Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) quarterback Ryan Burns, who enjoyed a successful June on the recruiting front. The 6'5", 220-pound prospect, heading into his first season as the Bulldogs starting signal caller, scored offers from Virginia, Stanford and Rutgers last month. Boston College had offered previously.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Hermitage OL/DL Pledges To Virginia
The University of Virginia football program has closed out the month of June with another 2012 class verbal commitment. Cavs destroy Mountaineers, 48-22

Wow! That pretty much sums up the overall performance of the Virginia Cavaliers last Sunday when they completely took apart 13th ranked West Virginia in the Continental Tire Bowl.

The Cavaliers were led by true freshman Wali Lundy, who scored four touchdowns, two through the air and two on the ground. The first was a reception from backup quarterback Marques Hagans after a lateral pass from Matt Schaub. The trick play was one of many that were successful against West Virginia, and it kept the Mountaineers on their heels the entire game.

Also putting in a startling performance was Hagans, who not only assisted in UVa's first score of the game, but broke the 'Eers back when he returned a punt 69 yards for a touchdown in the second quarter. The touchdown put UVa up 21-10, and the Hoos never looked back.

Schaub also had a tremendous day, completing 16 of 22 passes for 182 yards and a touchdown, with no interceptions. That gives Schaub 28 touchdown passes to just seven interceptions on the year. Schaub also scored a touchdown on the ground when he scrambled on a fourth-down play near the goal line.

Angelo Crowell led the charge defensively, racking up 12 total tackles and helping to contain West Virginia super-back Avon Cobourne. Cobourne had mentioned in an earlier news article that he wished for a blowout and to know that his team would secure the win by halftime. He was half right. It was a blowout. Cobourne finished the day with good numbers (117 yards rushing with two touchdowns), but it was not enough.

The win marks only the sixth time in school history that the Cavaliers have posted nine wins on the season. As noted, Virginia returns 20 starters next season and many key reserves, including senior quarterback Matt Schaub. Additions on the roster of prep players Ahmad Brooks and Keenan Carter should help strengthen a defense that ranked near the bottom of college football this season. It's not that Virginia was bad on defense; the low ranking was mostly due to youth, since the Hoos rotated 12 freshmen and sophomores in their two-deep this season.

JHoo's Summer Reading 2011: Defensive Tackles
Image: Will Hill2010 was a fascinating year to evaluate the defensive tackles, all of whom were playing new roles in a new system, trying to find their way as they went. Overall, the unit was relatively productive under the ... you know ... circumstances, but a bump in performance is hoped for in 2011. The Summer Reading continues as we jump to the defensive side of the ball with a look at those defensive tackles first.
