This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Varina (VA) defensive tackle/offensive lineman Tyrell Chavis verbally committed to the University of Virginia on June 18, the day of Mike London's Big Man Camp/7-on-7 Tournament. Today on the EDGE, the 6'4", 288-pound rising senior goes in depth on his decision. He talks football, too, including the aggression with which he plays the sport. Blue Devils head coach Stu Brown provides other notes from June 18 as well.

Demeitre Brim, a 6'3", 200-pound rising senior out of Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL), committed to the Hoos in late April. Last week, he stepped on Grounds for the first time ever. Brim, a quarterback and safety at VCA but an outside linebacker/safety prospect for the Cavaliers, reflects on the visit and answers how solid he is with his commitment.

Brim was in Charlottesville on June 22 and June 23. Fellow 2012 class commits Kwontie Moore and Wil Wahee were on Grounds on the 23rd as well.

Also this week, stay tuned for the latest on a couple of in-state prospects rising in the recruiting ranks. Lake Taylor (Norfolk) safety/wide receiver Mike Tyson, a rising senior, scored an offer from Penn State last week. UVA is the other major D1 offer for the 6'2", 180-pound standout, who is also drawing serious interest from East Carolina, Maryland, North Carolina and Oregon.

Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) rising junior quarterback Ryan Burns has only experienced very limited action on the varsity level, but that has not stopped him from receiving three major FBS offers to this point. Boston College saw the 6'5", 220-pound signal caller in action last summer and offered. This summer, Virginia and Stanford have followed suit and it's a good bet that N.C. State will come through here in the near future.

Burns scored an offer from the Cavaliers after the June 18 7-on-7. He showed good accuracy and a rocket arm, and the Virginia coaches were sold. Stanford was sold as well this past week, when Burns participated in its summer camp.

Finally, TheSabre.com's 2012 In-State Top 40 will be revealed this week as well.

Wilson Wins Lowe's Senior CLASS Award

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Pitcher Tyler Wilson of the University of Virginia has been selected as the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award winner in baseball. The announcement and trophy presentation were made in Omaha by Lowe's, an official corporate partner of the NCAA, during the College World Series.

The award, chosen by a nationwide vote of Division I head coaches, national media and fans, is given annually to the most outstanding senior student-athlete in NCAA Division I baseball. To be eligible for the award, a student-athlete must be classified as an NCAA Division I senior and have notable achievements in four areas of excellence - community, classroom, character and competition.

"As the recipient of the 2011 Lowe's Senior CLASS Award in baseball, I feel extremely privileged, honored and blessed. At the University of Virginia, we acknowledge the creed ‘The Pursuit of Excellence,' a concept I have always felt is truly epitomized by the categories of this award. It is every student-athlete's mission to strive for excellence in the classroom, surrounding community, personal character and athletic competition," Wilson said.

"I am honored to be the selected recipient of this award that quintessentially represents what every athlete around the United States contributes to his or her respective university. After finishing my four years here, I want to thank my coaches for their guidance and endless spirit, my friends for their unwavering support and my family for their genuine love. I couldn't have achieved any of this without the dedication and perseverance of those close to me. Above all else, each opportunity was placed in front of me by the hands of God, making it most important to give all thanks and praise back to Him."

Finding Peace Despite Defeat
Image: Tyler Wilson and Just 12 days ago, I wrote that there is a fine line between dejection and delirium. That Super Regional win and scene on a perfect Monday night couldn't have been scripted any better. I wish I didn't have to be reminded so soon of how the other end feels, though. Losing 3-2 in the bottom of the 13th inning in an epic College World Series elimination game? You won't find too many things in sports more disappointing than that.

Cavaliers' Run Ends In Omaha
Image: Steven ProsciaIn a season where clutch hitting and big two-out rallies were the norm, the Cavaliers failed 12 of 13 times to plate a run with runners in scoring position and that sealed their fate in Friday's 13-inning, 3-2 loss to South Carolina in the College World Series. The loss dropped the Hoos to a 56-12 final mark for the season and eliminated the Cavaliers from the CWS in Omaha. Anyone interested can greet the Hoos for a fan appreciation night on Saturday, June 25 from 6-7:30 p.m. at Davenport Field.

Wilson's Outing Leads UVa To Win
Image: Tyler WilsonAfter taking the day off from playing Cavalier baseball Tuesday night against South Carolina, Virginia returned to playing its brand with great pitching, great defense and timely two-out hitting against California on Thursday. As a result, the Hoos remained alive in the College World Series with an 8-1 win that eliminated the Bears. The team is back in action Friday night at 7 p.m. in a rematch with South Carolina in Omaha.

Hoos Remain Alive In Omaha
Let this sink in for a minute. The Virginia baseball team just joined the College World Series Final Four. Incredible isn't it? Though hardly surprising. The Hoos have bounced back from losses all season long with similar fervor found in Thursday night's 8-1 knockout blow against California. It's this ongoing resilience that has endeared fans to the Virginia baseball program.

Photo Gallery: Super Regional Thriller
Image: Chris Taylor and team celebrate the victoryThe Virginia baseball team faces California on Thursday night with a chance to become one of the final four teams playing in the 2011 College World Series. The Cavaliers got to the CWS with a thrilling ninth inning victory against UC Irvine in the Charlottesville Super Regional. Take a look back at the exciting game in this photo gallery that features 100 images of the Hoos' win.

JHoo's Summer Reading 2011: Tight Ends
Image: Colter PhillipsOver the last decade, UVa has had its fair share of stars at the tight end position. This season, it is not clear that there is a "star" among the tight ends but there is decent quality, there is diversity of skills, and there is solid depth. Coming out of the spring, for example, Colter Phillips, Paul Freedman, and Jeremiah Mathis were listed together atop the depth chart. I expect each of the three to play important roles in 2011.

South Carolina Smashes Virginia
Shaky defense, missed opportunities at the plate, no clutch hitting and an inability to get big outs from the mound led to Virginia's 7-1 loss Tuesday evening to South Carolina. UVa trailed quickly thanks to two errors in the first inning and never recovered. The Cavaliers (55-11) will face California in a College World Series elimination game Thursday night at 7 p.m.
