This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Last week was action-packed with the NBPA Top 100 Camp, the Virginia Elite Basketball Camp, and the Virginia football Big Man Camp/7-on-7 tournament. Today, the focus will be on the NBPA Top 100 with a complete recap of the event.

Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD) shooting guard/small forward Justin Anderson and Milton (Alpharetta, GA) small forward Evan Nolte, both UVa commitments, participated, with Nolte's team taking the NBPA Top 100 championship. The following UVa targets will be covered in today's report (class is noted in parenthesis):

  • Gonzaga College (Washington, D.C.) PG Nate Britt (2013)
  • St. Augustine (New Orleans, LA) PG Javan Felix (2012)
  • Olympic (Charlotte, N.C.) G Allerick Freeman (2013)
  • South Sioux City (Sioux City, NE) PG Mike Gesell (2012)
  • DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) PG James Robinson (2012)
  • Second Baptist (Houstin, TX) PG L.J. Rose (2012)

We'll have recruiting updates and more on these prospects and more in today's report, so stay tuned.

On Sunday, UVa held its Elite Basketball Camp and a host of young prospects were in town. Former UVa star Bryant Stith was on hand to watch his sons, Brandan and Broderick, perform in front of the UVa coaches. Also, Devon Hall, the younger brother of Cavaliers 2012 football commitment Mark Hall, participated as well. We'll have more on these prospects and others this week.

On the football front, UVa added two more 2012 class commitments last week. Both are linemen, but one - Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) Michael Mooney - projects on the offensive side of the ball. The other, Varina (VA) standout Tyrell Chavis, projects initially as a defensive tackle.

We'll have an in-depth feature on Mooney and Chavis out on Tuesday. We'll also have more from the 7-on-7 and Big Man Camps, including an article on Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) rising junior quarterback Ryan Burns, who left Charlottesville with an offer on Saturday. The 6'5", 220-pound signal caller is now one of three in-state rising junior quarterbacks Virginia has offered.

2012 class commit Demeitre Brim will be making his first ever visit to Charlottesville this week, and of course we'll follow up with him for further comments. The Victory Christian Academy (Lakeland, FL) linebacker/safety committed earlier in the spring but has recently scored offers from Central Florida and Temple.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Varina DL/OL Chavis Accepts UVa Offer
Make it two Varina (VA) Blue Devils in the University of Virginia's 2012 class. 6'4", 290-pound defensive tackle/offensive lineman Tyrell Chavis committed to Mike London and company today while attending the UVa's Big Man Camp/7 on 7 tournament event.

Hoos Add Offensive Line Commitment
UVa's football program continues to roll in the commitments, today scoring a commitment from 6'5", 265-pound offensive tackle Michael Mooney. The Malvern Prep (Malvern, PA) product is the 10th rising senior to commit to the Cavaliers program, which has secured five commits this month alone.

Q&A With Justin Anderson
Image: Justin AndersonFor Justin Anderson, the recruiting process began in the eighth grade, when he earned MVP honors on Courtland High School's (Fredericksburg, VA) junior varsity squad. College letters starting arriving and were followed shortly by the first major college scholarship offer. Moving on to Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD), Anderson continued to impress, starting for Stu Vetter's prep powerhouse as a freshman. The 6'5", 220-pound rising senior is now one of the most highly regarded prospects in the 2012 class, one of the most highly acclaimed prospects to commit to Virginia's basketball program, and he is the subject of this latest "Q&A."

Kostelac Sweeps ACC Freshman of the Year Honors

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia's Anthony Kostelac has been named the 2011 ACC Men's Outdoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, as voted on by the league's 12 head coaches and announced Friday by the conference office. Kostelac, the 2011 ACC Men's Indoor Track and Field Freshman of the Year, becomes the third-straight Cavalier to earn the league's top rookie honor, as sophomore NCAA Champion Robby Andrews earned the accolade last year and junior All-American Morgane Gay was tabbed the women's freshman of the year during the 2009 outdoor season.

In addition, Kostelac is the fifth student-athlete in league history to claim the awards for both the indoor and outdoor seasons, and the second Cavalier to do so. Andrews was tagged the top rookie during both seasons last year.

Around the World of Wahoo Sports ...

  • Three Cavaliers Named All-Americans: Virginia's Danny Hultzen, Branden Kline and Will Roberts each were named All-Americans Wednesday. Hultzen was named a first-team All-American at the utility position on the Baseball America and National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) All-America teams. Kline was selected as a First-Team NCBWA All-American as a relief pitcher, while Roberts was named a Second-Team NCBWA All-American as a starting pitcher. The first three-time All-American in Virginia history, Hultzen is 12-3 this year with a 1.49 ERA, which is sixth lowest in Division I.
  • Branden Kline is Named to Team USA's Collegiate Roster: Virginia sophomore right-handed pitcher Branden Kline has been added to the 2011 USA Collegiate National Team roster. The finalist for the Stopper of the Year Award is one of 22 non-draft-eligible college players on the team. Kline and Duke's Marcus Stroman are the only ACC players on the USA Collegiate National Team.
  • Track & Field and Cross Country Program Ranked Among Nation's Best: Virginia's women's track and field and cross country program finished tied with Colorado for 10th place in the final standings of the third annual NCAA Division I Terry Crawford Program of the Year Award, as announced by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA).
  • Greenlief Sets History with Virginias Women's Stroke Play Victory: Virginia women's golfer Lauren Greenlief left little doubt that she was going to own a special place in the Virginia State Golf Association record books with her performance in the final round of the Virginias Women's Stroke Play Championship on Thursday. The 20-year-old negotiated windy conditions to shoot a final round best 2-under-par 70 to blow past the field for a seven-stroke victory. With the triumph, the recent University of Virginia graduate became the first player to win the title three consecutive years in the championship's 34-year history. Additionally, she became the fourth player to claim a trio of victories in the event, joining former LPGA Tour player Donna Andrews as well as Liz (Rowland) Rogers and Sherry Bowman in owning that distinction.
  • Huey, Devvarman to Compete at Wimbledon: Two former members of the Virginia men's tennis team will be in action this week at Wimbledon. Somdev Devvarman will compete in both singles and doubles at the All England Club, while Treat Huey will compete in doubles.
  • Sumfest, Robinson, Vittese to Compete in Junior National Championships: Three members of the Virginia field hockey team have been selected to compete in the 2011 Junior Women's National Championships, set for June 18-25 in Virginia Beach, Va. Rachel Sumfest, Katie Robinson and Carissa Vittese will all play in the tournament.
  • Four Cavaliers Named to All-ACC Academic Softball Team: Four members of the Virginia softball team were honored Thursday for their work in the classroom by the Atlantic Coast Conference. Freshman Stephanie Harris, sophomores Alex Skinkis and Taylor Williams and senior Alison Pittman were each named to the All-ACC Academic Softball Team.

Issue No. 245 - June 9, 2006

So Long to the Sports Year

UVa's Ben Rubeor makes the behind-the-head pass.

The year in University of Virginia sports came to a close last weekend when the baseball team's season ended in the Charlottesville Regional. It was a disappointing end to a successful season for Brian O'Connor's club - the Cavaliers set a school record for wins and hosted their second NCAA Regional in the past three seasons.

Of course, the Cavaliers' season-long success in baseball was part of what was a pretty good year for the Hoos in athletics. Among the programs finding great success in 2005-06 with NCAA Tournament apperances: men's and women's tennis, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's soccer, baseball, women's golf, men's and women's cross country, and men's and women's swimming. The men's and women's basketball teams both earned postseason berths in the NIT and WNIT, respectively, while the football team won the Music City Bowl.

The best of the best was the men's lacrosse team, which rolled to a 17-0 record and the NCAA Championship. The team won on average by more than 8 goals as the Hoos dominated nearly everyone they faced. In fact, just one game - a one-goal win against Princeton - was decided by less than four goals. In short, this group was simply amazing.

All in all, that's a solid sports year for Cavalier fans. Count me among those with one thought in mind: Can't wait for 2006-07 to get started!

Cavaliers Capture CWS Opener
Image: Keith WermanDanny Hultzen, All-American and the second overall pick in the MLB Draft, hurled 6.1 innings of three-hit, scoreless baseball and the Virginia baseball team improved to 55-10 by winning its opening game of the 2011 College World Series. The Hoos broke a scoreless tie in the seventh inning en route to the 4-1 victory against California.

Hicks Continues Herculean Postseason
Image: John HicksJohn Hicks looks like Disney's Hercules come to life. He's a tall, statuesque figure with sandy blonde hair and grins like he's having the time of his life. Hicks carries a big club like the figure from mythology too. In Omaha on Sunday, the Virginia catcher used that bat to break a scoreless tie and propel the Cavaliers past California 4-1 in bracket play at the College World Series.

JHoo's Summer Reading 2011: Offensive Line
Image: Offensive LineYear in, year out, the offensive line is the hardest of any of the Summer Reading columns to write ... and it really is not close. After all, when it comes to the line, it is not so much about the individual players - the primary focus of these columns in many ways - but instead about how the pieces fit together. The same is true this year, as the talent seems to be there for UVa to have a pretty good line but it is somewhat unclear where even "established" starters will start. Still, compared to some recent years, that is an awfully good problem to have.

UVa Dramatically Earns Spot In Omaha
Image: Chris Taylor and team celebrate the victoryDown to their final out and final strike, the Cavaliers came up with an exhilarating comeback Monday in the Charlottesville Super Regional. Chris Taylor's two-out, walk-off, 2 RBI single in the bottom of the ninth inning propelled the Virginia baseball team to a 3-2 win over UC Irvine in the decisive third game of the series. With the victory, the Hoos earned their second trip to the College World Series in the last three seasons.

Euphoric Ending Lifts Hoos Into CWS
Image: Coach Brian O'ConnorThere is the thinnest of lines between dejection and delirium. Second guessing and elation. As Virginia's dugout and stands tight-roped that line Monday evening, a somewhat eerie feeling hung heavily over Davenport Field. Super Regional winner-take-all Game 3. Bottom of the ninth. Down one. Two outs, two strikes, nobody on for David Coleman. A historic baseball season sat in the balance. Then a hit and a sliver of hope. A fortuitous bounce, a four-pitch walk, and Chris Taylor's dancing single up the middle. All a blur really. Euphoria.
