Three In A Row For Baseball

The Virginia baseball team reeled off three convincing wins in the NCAA Tournament's Charlottesville Regional this weekend. The region-clinching win proved to be a 13-1 destruction of East Carolina. The Cavaliers, seeded No. 1 in the tourney, were as good as advertised and arguably even better than Saturday when they rolled St. John's 10-2.

"My opening statement [Saturday] night was that I thought that in the game against St. John's, we played about as good of a ballgame as we could possibly play. We might have played event better [Sunday] night. I am very proud of this team," UVa coach Brian O'Connor said. "We need to feel good about what has been accomplished. I think sometimes people can look at this thing and say, you're the No. 1 overall seed, and you should win. But you're seeing in regionals all across the country that that's not happening. Top seeds aren't necessarily winning their regionals. You have to play great baseball this time of year and these three ballgames we played in this regional we've played as well as we have all year. Our guys are getting after it all over the field, on the mound, at the plate, and doing some really great things. I am very proud of what we just accomplished."

In some ways, it actually looked easy. The Hoos dominated on the mound, pounded out hits all around the lineup, and played excellent defense.

"I can assure you coming into this weekend there was no way I thought or the players thought this was going to be easy. It's a lot more difficult than maybe what the scoreboard indicated after these three games were over. There's a lot that goes into this. We earned it this weekend. We played as good of baseball as you can play against three really high-quality opponents. East Carolina has one of the top-10 pitching staffs in the country and we swung the bats great against them. St. John's is a really great club and obviously Navy earned the right to be here," O'Connor said. "Nothing comes easy and it's important that our players enjoy this moment and feel proud of what they have accomplished. This is three years in a row that we have made the Super Regional level and that's equivalent to the Sweet 16 in basketball. That's a special accomplishment. What's important is that we enjoy that first."

The regional wins advance the Cavaliers to their third straight Super Regional. UVa defeated Ole Miss in 2009 to reach the College World Series and fell to Oklahoma in three games in 2010. Virginia faces UC Irvine in the 2011 Charlottesville Super Regional (schedule to be announced).

"We are proud of what we have done. As Coach said, this is a great accomplishment, and we're very proud of it," UVa pitcher Danny Hultzen said. "But at the same time we know we are not even close to being done yet. Whoever comes to play us next weekend, we are going to be ready to play."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The big news from the June 5 Elite Prospect Day was Virginia scoring commitment No. 6 in the 2012 recruiting class. Max Valles, a 6'5", 220-pound potential defensive end or outside linebacker, pledged to the Hoos over offers from Buffalo, Purdue, Rutgers and Syracuse. Valles spoke with TheSabre.com about his decision on Sunday, and EDGE subscribers can read more on Virginia's newest commitment.

In total, about 20-25 prospects were in Charlottesville on Sunday. Ocean Lakes (Virginia Beach, VA) rising senior defensive end Eli Harold made the trip. Even if a commitment doesn't come soon, having the 6'4", 220-pound star on Grounds once again is certainly a positive.

This event wasn't only for rising seniors, as some standout rising juniors such as Derrick Green (RB, Hermitage) and Tim Harris (DB, Varina) were on hand. Both Green and Harris have been offered by UVa and figure to be two of the most highly recruited prospects in the state's 2013 class.

This week the EDGE will be packed with follow-up information from Sunday's event, so stay tuned for the latest throughout the week.

Also this week …

  • Worcester Academy (Worcester, MA) wide receiver Canaan Severin visited UVa last week. The 6'3", 210-pound rising senior reflects on the visit, which went well in part thanks to a personal touch from Virginia defensive coordinator Jim Reid. Severin is also considering offers from Boston College, Connecticut, N.C. State, Penn State, Rutgers, and more.
  • Central Catholic (Allentown, PA) quarterback Brendan Nosovitch considered attending the Elite Prospect Day, but he decided against it. Nosovitch does, however, intend to make his way to Charlottesville in the coming weeks. The 6'2", 200-pound rising senior signal caller names three favorites and talks recruiting in this latest EDGE update.

Cavs Snare New Jersey Athlete

Max Valles anticipated the University of Virginia's Elite Prospect Day being a positive experience. He was right, and he left Charlottesville a member of the UVa's 2012 recruiting class. The St. Joseph's (Hammonton, N.J.) athlete prospect committed to the Cavaliers over offers from Buffalo, Purdue, Rutgers and Syracuse.

Stanwick Receives The Tewaaraton Trophy

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia junior attackman Steele Stanwick has become the third Cavalier to win the coveted Tewaaraton Trophy, awarded to the top male collegiate lacrosse player, announced by the Greater Washington Alliance on Thursday night inside Washington D.C.'s Warner Theatre.

"This award means a great deal to me," said Stanwick. "This is something I have been dreaming about since I was young. I am really humbled by the honor and I wouldn't be here without my teammates."

Stanwick (Baltimore, Md.) joins Chris Rotelli (2003) and Matt Ward (2006) as Virginia Cavaliers who have won college lacrosse's top honor. All three of UVa's Tewaaraton Trophy winners earned the award in a season they led the Cavaliers to a NCAA title.

Stanwick finished the season No. 3 in the nation with 2.24 assists per game and No. 4 in the nation with 4.12 points per game. The junior tallied 21 points (9 points, 12 assists) in the 2011 NCAA Tournament, leading Virginia to the program's fifth all-time title. Stanwick was named to the All-NCAA Championship Tournament team. He also was the ACC Player of the Year and earned USILA first-team All-America accolades in 2011.

Run Into Scott Stadium!

Ever wanted to run on to the field at Scott Stadium like your favorite Hoos? Now you can! The Charlottesville Men's Four Miler's 7th annual race will be held on June 19, 2011 at 7:30 a.m. and will finish on David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium. The course will wind through the surrounding areas of the stadium and the grounds of the University of Virginia before the participants enter the facility from Stadium Road and "run through the tunnel" to finish at the 50-yard line.

Previously held in December, the race will now start on Father's Day for the first time. The event will also become the first ever running event to finish in Scott Stadium and on David A. Harrison III Field.

Founded in 2004, by the University of Virginia's Department of Urology, the race's primary purpose is to encourage men in the community to become more physically active and to take a proactive role in the management of their health. All funds raised will go towards the development of the Virginia Men's Health Improvement and Performance Initiative (VMHIPI) at the University of Virginia.

Online registrations for the training program and the race are being accepted and are available on the official race web site www.mensfourmiler.com.

Blog Banter: A Reid Leftover

Jim ReidVirginia's new defensive coordinator Jim Reid joined reporters on a teleconference after his hire and talked at length about UVa, the 3-4 defense vs. the 4-3, recruiting, and more. If you missed it, The Sabre had two articles about Coach Reid. Read them here and here. One quote that didn't make either article follows. The question was about Virginia being Coach Reid's last stop.

"At age 59, it would just be great to just have a recruiting area, a couple of recruiting areas, stay in there, welcome high school coaches in to talk some football, to win, and be able to stay here," Reid said. "The first 19 years, and I promised my wife I wouldn't make college coaching a transient profession, the first 19 years were spent at the University of Massachusetts and I was going to live and die there. Then I ended up coming to Richmond (chuckles) for two years, to Boston College for a year, to Richmond for nine years, to Syracuse for a year, to Bucknell for a year, to VMI for two years, to the Miami Dolphins for two years. When I said geez I'd like to go to Virginia, she said do you remember that promise you made to me a number of years ago? (laughs) I had to make that promise again. As long as we can do a good job here - no, no, I know we'll do a good job - as long as I can do a good job here for the University of Virginia and Coach London, I'd like to stay here and win some championships. I remember George Welsh telling me when they redid the facility here, he said we did it right and we can win a National Championship. So that's the goal."

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Proscia, Cavaliers Advance Past ECU
Image: Steven ProsciaAnother strong start from a pitcher ... check. Some more clutch two-out hitting ... check. Another Super Regional berth ... check. The Virginia baseball team quickly took care of business in the NCAA Tournament Charlottesville Regional, winning its third straight game in convincing fashion on Sunday to move on to the program's third straight Super Regional. Virginia defeated East Carolina 13-1 to advance.

Fans Flocking To Davenport For Sterling Hoos
Image: Virginia has a lot of baseball fansA seat, a seat! Anything for a seat! Virginia fans may need more than a kingdom to trade for a seat at Davenport Field these days. The Cavalier baseball team is, after all, easily the hottest ticket in town. Fans are tucked in every general admission and reserved seat in sight. They're standing in every nook and cranny. And why not? Anyone at Davenport Field can see just how high quality the on-field product is these days in Charlottesville.

Hoos Reign Over Red Storm
Image: Danny HultzenThe Virginia baseball team opened the Charlottesville Regional of the NCAA Tournament on Friday with strong pitching and clutch hitting in a win over Navy. Saturday, St. John's got a dose of the Cavaliers' winning formula. ACC Pitcher of the Year Danny Hultzen struck out 12 batters, David Coleman had 4 RBI, and Steven Proscia jumpstarted it all with a first inning home run. When the dust settled, UVa owned a 10-2 win over the Red Storm and a shot at the region title.

Coleman Makes Contact, Impact For UVa
Image: David ColemanIf you Google the name David Coleman, the first thing that comes up is The Dating Doctor, "America's Real-Life Hitch." If you add Virginia to the line, you get UVa Miller Center Associate Professor David Coleman, who specializes on nuclear and defense policy. Cavalier senior David Coleman doesn't mind - he's having the time of his life as the "average Joe" right fielder for the nation's No. 1 college baseball team.

Roberts, UVa Take Down Navy
Image: Will RobertsStrong pitching, clutch hitting, and good defense have been the consistent harbingers to winning for the Virginia baseball team. Friday's NCAA Tournament opener at Davenport Field proved no different. Will Roberts dominated from the mound with 14 strikeouts, designated hitter Danny Hultzen set the offensive tone with 3 RBI, and the Cavaliers rolled past Navy 6-0.

Hitting Hultzen Helps Hoos Win Opener
Sometimes in baseball circles, you hear the descriptive phrase 'He's a bulldog on the mound.' The idea is that the player will hang in there against batters, grind away pitch after pitch, and generally battle for outs. In that way, Virginia junior Danny Hultzen certainly has a little bulldog in him. Turns out, the Cavalier ace is just as feisty at the plate

Photo Gallery: UVa's National Title Day
Image: National ChampionsThe Virginia men's lacrosse team overcame a mid-season tailspin and a first-round scare from Bucknell to win the NCAA Tournament and National Championship over Memorial Day weekend in Baltimore. Coach Dom Starsia, goalkeeper Adam Ghitelman, attackman Steele Stanwick, midfielder Colin Briggs, and the Cavaliers celebrated the title victory on the sweltering hot day in Charm City.

Changes Spark NCAA Championship Run
Between March 26 and April 22, the Virginia men's lacrosse team played five games, and lost four. Between April 23 and Monday's NCAA Championship game, the Cavaliers played 5 games, and lost none, ending in what coach Dom Starsia called his most satisfying National Championship ever - and he's had four of them

JHoo's Summer Reading 2011: Running Backs
Image: Perry JonesYear in, year out, I find that I am not that worried about whether the running backs will be an issue for the Virginia offense. In all likelihood, that opinion is the natural result of a belief that if an offensive line is solid, the running backs in turn will be able to gain yards, whether by the run or the pass. But whatever the reason behind my opinion - and my opinion remains pretty much the same going into 2011 as it has in past seasons - it should not obscure the fact that there is solid talent at the position.

Wahoos Win National Championship
Image: Dom StarsiaBALTIMORE - There are moments in every game where one bounce, one shot, or one turnover can make all the difference in the world. Monday, in the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship at M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Virginia faced two of those moments before taking down Maryland, 9-7, for the program's fifth tit
