Only Postseason Contests Remain

For Virginia fans, the only contests left in the 2010-2011 sports year are postseason match-ups. The baseball team finished up its regular season run over the weekend with a 45-9 record, including a 22-8 mark in the ACC. The Hoos now enter the ACC Tournament as the No. 1 seed before finding out their NCAA Tournament fate.

Three teams play for a shot at a National Championship this week, though.

On the tennis courts, the men's team advanced to its fourth NCAA Tournament Semifinal in the last five years with a thrilling 4-3 win against Stanford, the host school for the 2011 tourney. The Cavaliers face Ohio State at 3 p.m. on Monday to see which team gets a shot at the National Championship on Tuesday. The top-ranked and top-seeded Hoos are 33-0 on the season.

The men's lacrosse team also secured a NCAA Tournament Semifinal spot over the weekend; the seventh seeded Cavaliers knocked off No. 2 seed Cornell last Saturday 13-9 to advance to the sport's final weekend in Baltimore. That victory makes UVa head coach Dom Starsia the wins leader for the sport at the Division I level. Starsia's 327 career wins allowed him to pass coaching legend Jack Emmer on the charts. Virginia faces Denver at 4 p.m. on Saturday and the winner advances to the National Championship Game on Monday.

The women's rowing team, meanwhile, earned its 14th trip to the 15-year old NCAA Women's Rowing Championships. The fifth-ranked Cavaliers enter the event as the defending champion after winning the 2010 title. The program also has recorded a runner-up finish three times (most recently in 2007). The championships will be held May 27-29 at Sacramento State Aquatic Center in Gold River, Calif.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The Wahoo nation continues to wait for official word on 2012 class basketball standout Justin Anderson, who is rated a 5-star prospect by Rivals.com and a 4-star recruit by ESPN.com and Scout.com. Per multiple reports and sources, the 6-5, 210-pound forward out of Montrose Christian (Rockville, MD) has backed off of the commitment he gave the University of Maryland and is strongly considering the University of Virginia.

There is speculation that Anderson may take a visit to Virginia Tech, which just hired former Maryland assistant Rob Ehsan. Ehsan was the lead recruiter for Anderson while at Maryland, but at this point the junior's interest in Virginia Tech is speculation.

Will Anderson commit to UVa? That was the strong sentiment last week, but as of yet nothing has been made public. Anderson did confirm to Daily Press columnist David Teel that he made a visit to UVa last Wednesday, but he declined to comment much further on his recruiting situation.

"We're just leaving the whole thing alone, because right now the most important thing is my exams at school and making sure I finish the year off strong," Anderson told Teel this past Saturday.

This week is the final week of Montrose Christian's 2010/2011 school year. Perhaps Anderson will clarify his situation later in the week, but nothing is definitive. At this point, we wait. Whenever something does break, we'll be there to provide the info. In the meantime, TheSabre.com followers should check out the Basketball message board, where hoops guru CVilleHoops13 has done a great job of providing info on this situation.

Football ...

Virginia 2011 football signee Kevin Green says he is on track to enroll this summer. The 6-2, 215-pound Petersburg High School (Petersburg, VA) senior has worked hard in the classroom and, if he finishes out well, expects to enroll at UVa in June.

Green, an athlete recruit, discusses academics and potential position in an upcoming EDGE article.

On the 2012 front ...

Centreville (Clifton, VA) defensive end/linebacker Ken Ekanem has not narrowed his list definitively, but he does list a handful of schools currently high on his list in an upcoming EDGE article. UVa was on the outside looking in for the 6-3, 230-pound junior, but Ekanem's recent conversation with assistant coach Anthony Poindexter appears to have made a difference.

Ekanem, a Washington Post first-team all-metro selection in 2010, updates the latest in his recruitment including whether or not he plans to attend UVa's 2012 prospect day on June 5.

I'll also have more this week on Woodberry Forest (VA) safety CJ Prosise and defensive back Carlson Milikin as well as Broad Run (Ashburn, VA) quarterback Connor Jessup.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Strategy Session: Moore A Big Piece For UVa D

Not all highly rated high school athletes pan out on the next level. That's part of the inexact science of recruiting. The more upper level recruits a program can add, however, the better the chances for success become certainly. In that regard, Mike London and company have hit the Grounds running at Virginia. With that in mind, 20 players have either enrolled, signed or committed in the last two classes as London is in the midst of building his defense. This "Strategy Session" - a new big picture recruiting series exclusively on TheSabre.com - focuses on that side of the ball for the Hoos.

Is Michael Moore Closing In On A Decision?

Image: Michael MooreDeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) defensive end/tight end Michael Moore is serious about making his college choice before the start of his senior season. This week, the 6-4, 240-pound junior revealed that there is a chance he commits before the spring is out.

Hultzen, O'Connor Repeat

ACC Official Release

Clemson junior shortstop Brad Miller and Virginia junior pitcher Danny Hultzen head up the 2011 All-Atlantic Coast Conference Baseball Team, as announced by ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

Miller was selected the ACC Player of the Year in a vote of the league's 12 head coaches, while Hultzen was named the ACC Pitcher of the Year for the second consecutive season. Virginia's Brian O'Connor was voted the league's Coach of the Year for the second year in a row as well. In addition, North Carolina freshman third baseman Colin Moran received ACC Freshman of the Year honors.

Hultzen becomes the first player to claim back-to-back ACC Pitcher of the Year honors since the award was established in 2005. It is the third major conference award for the Bethesda, Md., native, who also was named the 2009 ACC Freshman of the Year. Hultzen has posted a 9-3 record and a 1.49 ERA while leading the Cavaliers (45-9) to a share of the ACC Coastal Division title and a No. 1 national ranking for much of the season. His 131 strikeouts lead the conference and rank second nationally. The junior lefthander owns a 29-5 career record for an .853 winning percentage that currently ranks 19th all-time among ACC pitchers.

Virginia's O'Connor received his second straight ACC Coach of the Year Award and his third overall after guiding the Cavaliers to at least a share of the Coastal Division title and the No. 1 seed in the ACC Championship for the second straight year. Virginia's 45 wins tie for third-best in school history and are six behind the record of 51 set last season. O'Connor's Cavaliers placed a league-high seven players on the All-ACC first and second teams, including five first-team selections. UVa's first-team picks are Hultzen (Jr., starting pitcher), John Hicks (Jr., Catcher), Steven Proscia (Jr., third base), David Coleman (Sr., OF), and Branden Kline (So., relief pitcher). The second-team picks are John Barr (Sr., OF) and Tyler Wilson (Sr., starting pitcher).

In other baseball news, Hicks has been named one of 13 national semifinalists for the Coleman Company-Johnny Bench Award, announced Thursday by the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission. Finalists will be announced June 6, and the award will be presented June 30.

Run Into Scott Stadium!

Ever wanted to run on to the field at Scott Stadium like your favorite Hoos? Now you can! The Charlottesville Men's Four Miler's 7th annual race will be held on June 19, 2011 at 7:30 a.m. and will finish on David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium. The course will wind through the surrounding areas of the stadium and the grounds of the University of Virginia before the participants enter the facility from Stadium Road and "run through the tunnel" to finish at the 50-yard line.

Previously held in December, the race will now start on Father's Day for the first time. The event will also become the first ever running event to finish in Scott Stadium and on David A. Harrison III Field.

Founded in 2004, by the University of Virginia's Department of Urology, the race's primary purpose is to encourage men in the community to become more physically active and to take a proactive role in the management of their health. All funds raised will go towards the development of the Virginia Men's Health Improvement and Performance Initiative (VMHIPI) at the University of Virginia.

Blog Banter: Goodbye Pullman, Hello C-ville!; Cavs Tap Bennett

From The Good Ol' Blog

Virginia's potential wish list for their head coaching vacancy in the wake of Dave Leitao's departure read like a 'Who's Who in College Basketball'. A sea of names from Tubby Smith to Trent Johnson to Sean Miller and everyone in between seemed to be discussed in articles and message board posts alike. The rumor mill went wild as Tubby toured JPJA under the cover of darkness and planes were chartered all over the continental U.S.

But in a surprise move Craig Littlepage and Co. selected one name that had not been widely discussed to this point: Tony Bennett. Bennett, the former head coach at Washington State, reportedly accepted the Cavaliers' offer Monday to become the next head coach of the Wahoos. Details of the contract are still unknown at this point. As late as Monday morning, Smith still appeared to be the favorite for the position but that turned to speculation as The Daily Progress broke the story that Bennett, 39, was the Cavaliers' man. ... The 2006 Recruiting Debacle
Image: Marc Verica"This class has a hit-or-miss feel to it, though. So we'll have to wait a few years to see if it was enough or not." - TheSabre.com Editor Kris Wright, February 8, 2006 Wright likely had no idea how right he was back in February 2006 regarding Al Groh's sixth recruiting class but we've waited and seen the fruit and it's not appetizing, something that continues to impact the program into 2011.

Another Fine Weekend For UVa
Image: Keith WermanMuch has been made about Virginia's struggles after the exam break, but the numbers don't tell the whole story. And while the Cavaliers didn't make things easy thanks to a pair of one-run games, the bottom line is that top-ranked Virginia claimed its ninth straight ACC series win this season and 15th consecutive ACC series overall by taking out 16th ranked Miami two games to one.
