A Momentum Win?

After Virginia's comeback victory against Bucknell on Sunday afternoon, coach Dom Starsia was asked if there is any such thing as momentum that carries forward from one game to the next. The Hoos' thrilling 13-12 overtime win, which featured a 10-6 UVa deficit late in the third quarter, earned the team a berth in the NCAA Quarterfinals against Cornell. So can such a dramatic and emotional victory propel the Cavaliers in the match-up with the Big Red?

"I think it goes to confidence. You know Cornell is not going to care anything about our momentum, but we have a little bit of personal confidence now and a little bit more of it than we had before this game started," Starsia said. "My guess is that we'll have a little bit more of an edge to us in practice and we're going to be a little bit more determined about this Cornell team. ... Even in the locker room downstairs after we shook Bucknell's hands and saying to the guys whatever it takes for us the next five days and them looking back at you like 'Hey, you're right. Let's do it." A win like this gives us a little bit of personal confidence that you can't talk about getting, you have to actually do something in order to develop that."

The Cavaliers face Cornell on Saturday at noon. That game is slated to appear on ESPN2 in HD.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia got its big-time middle linebacker last week, when Norfolk Christian (VA) junior Kwontie Moore pledged to the Hoos. The 6-1, 242-pound standout, a member of the Rivals.com preseason Top 250, chose the Cavaliers over offers from Arkansas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Stanford and Virginia Tech, among others.

This week, I'll take a closer look at Virginia's defensive recruiting over the course of the past two classes, including an overview of some of the top remaining targets in and out of the state. I'll also break down, position by position, the 2012 roster, examining the biggest needs in this class. With Moore in the fold, Virginia now has four commits in the 2012 class. All four project to play on the defensive side of the ball.

Norfolk Christian has four major FBS prospects in its 2012 class. Virginia has gained two of them in Moore and 5-10, 185-pound defensive back Wil Wahee. Virginia Tech is on the board now, though, with 6-5, 210-pound wide receiver/free safety Mario Nixon, who committed to the Hokies over Virginia this weekend.

Defensive lineman Courtnye Wynn is the fourth and final recruit, and currently he is high on both in-state schools. Don't be surprised if the 6-5, 245-pound junior makes a decision soon as well, so stay tuned.

Also this week ...

  • "Catching Up With The 2011 Class" was delayed, but I do plan to have the latest in this series up this week.
  • Hermitage (Richmond, VA) OL/DL Andre Miles-Redmond updates the latest on his recruitment. The 6-4, 260-pound junior has offers from N.C. State, Virginia and Virginia Tech. UVa likes him on either side of the ball.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

More With Wil Wahee

Wil Wahee only has two years of football experience, but the 5-10, 185-pound junior showed enough to sway Virginia head coach Mike London into offering a full scholarship last weekend. Wahee, a player Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, VA) linebackers coach Shannon Messick calls a "diamond in the rough," made big plays on offense while being highly productive on defense last season.

Star In-State Linebacker Commits To Hoos

Image: Kwontie MooreThe University of Virginia has landed one of the nation's best linebacker prospects in the 2012 class. Kwontie Moore, a 6-1, 242-pound junior out of Norfolk Christian High School (Norfolk, VA), verbally committed to the Cavaliers this evening, selecting UVa over offers from Arkansas, North Carolina, Notre Dame, Stanford and Virginia Tech, among others.

Blog Banter: Scott's Impact On Wins?

Last week on The Good Ol Blog, TheSabre.com held a poll of fan votes for men's basketball. With the news that the ACC approved Mike Scott's medical hardship waiver request, UVa fans were asked what Mike Scott's return meant for wins in Tony Bennett’s third season on the job. The results fell heavily in the range of 20-25 wins; 59.78% of votes selected that as the range of victories for the Hoos.

See the full poll results here.

Run Into Scott Stadium!

Ever wanted to run on to the field at Scott Stadium like your favorite Hoos? Now you can! The Charlottesville Men's Four Miler's 7th annual race will be held on June 19, 2011 at 7:30 a.m. and will finish on David A. Harrison III Field at Scott Stadium. The course will wind through the surrounding areas of the stadium and the grounds of the University of Virginia before the participants enter the facility from Stadium Road and "run through the tunnel" to finish at the 50-yard line.

Previously held in December, the race will now start on Father's Day for the first time. The event will also become the first ever running event to finish in Scott Stadium and on David A. Harrison III Field.

Founded in 2004, by the University of Virginia's Department of Urology, the race's primary purpose is to encourage men in the community to become more physically active and to take a proactive role in the management of their health. All funds raised will go towards the development of the Virginia Men's Health Improvement and Performance Initiative (VMHIPI) at the University of Virginia.

Online registrations for the training program and the race are being accepted and are available on the official race web site www.mensfourmiler.com.

Hamilton, Snelling Drafted

On Sunday, Virginia's Marcus Hamilton and Jason Snelling joined a long list of Cavaliers who have been selected in the NFL Draft. Both players were picked in the seventh and final round, extending a streak of 24 straight years for UVa players.

The Falcons drafted Snelling with the 244th overall selection, while Hamilton followed immediately at No. 245 when Tampa Bay called his name. Snelling was excited for the opportunity to play in Atlanta.

"I was hoping Atlanta would call me. This is a blessing and I look forward to working for the Atlanta Falcons," Snelling said in a news release. "This is something I've been dreaming of all of my life."

Hamilton was also happy for the chance to continue his football career in the NFL.

"I am happy that the Lord blessed me with the opportunity to play at the next level and that I was able to be drafted," Hamilton told The Daily Progress. "That's something that very few people get the opportunity to do and I am just truly thankful for the opportunity."

UVa Ekes Past Bucknell In OT
It's safe to say that the 2011 season has not gone the way the Virginia men's lacrosse team expected. After all, the Cavaliers lost more games in the regular season - five - than they had in the previous two years combined. For much of Sunday afternoon's NCAA Tournament game with Bucknell, it looked like a continuation of the same script. Fortunately for the Hoos, however, they had one last rally up their collective sleeves.

Shabaz Has Grown Into UVa Success
Image: Michael ShabazThere's something, though probably not one thing, about doubles that just clicks for Virginia senior Michael Shabaz. That's clear from looking at his track record at UVa and beyond. Shabaz, after all, has captured two straight NCAA doubles championships and won the Wimbledon junior boys' doubles title in 2005. All with different partners.

Taylor Makes Impact For Hoos
Image: Chris TaylorLeading off in the first games of the series against N.C. State, Chris Taylor fell behind 0-2 to starting Wolfpack hurler Rob Chamra. He worked the count to 3-2, fouled off the next pitch and drew a walk on the seventh pitch. That kind of patience and execution at the plate assured Taylor a spot in the Cavalier batting lineup in 2011.

Scott's Return Boosts Hoos' Hopes
Image: Mike ScottVirginia fans received the news they'd been waiting for on Thursday: the ACC approved the medical hardship waiver request of Mike Scott. That clears the way for Scott, who missed 21 games last season after two surgeries on his left ankle, to return for another year of eligibility with the Cavaliers. It's also immediately ratcheted up the already growing fan excitement for the 2011-2012 season.
