Men's Tennis Finishes Unbeaten ACC Run ... Again

This just in ... the UVa men's tennis team is really, really good. The No. 1 Cavaliers completed ACC play this weekend with a pair of home wins against Georgia Tech and Clemson, giving the Hoos an 11-0 mark in ACC play for the fifth straight season.

The official UVa Athletics Media Relations release follows:

The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team completed its fifth consecutive undefeated ACC regular season on Saturday with a 6-1 win over No. 15 Georgia Tech at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers (26-0, 11-0 ACC) extended their ACC-record win streak to 74 consecutive victories over conference competition and their school-record home winning streak to 87 matches. The Yellow Jackets fell to 17-4 overall and 8-3 in the ACC.

The Cavaliers opened the match by winning a close doubles point. Georgia Tech took the early edge as Guillermo Gomez and Dean O'Brien downed Alex Domijan (Wesley Chapel, Fla.) and Steven Rooda (Amersfoort, The Netherlands) 8-0 at No. 2. Virginia drew even with a win at No. 1 where Michael Shabaz (Fairfax, Va.) and Justin Shane (Falls Church, Va.) topped Eliot Potvin and Ryan Smith 8-5. The opening point came down to the match at No. 3, which went to a tiebreaker. Jarmere Jenkins (College Park, Ga.) and Julen Uriguen (Guatemala City, Guatemala), teaming for the first time in their careers, won the breaker 7-5 over Kevin King and Miguel Muguruza to clinch the doubles point. In singles, the Yellow Jackets drew even in the match, 1-1, as O'Brien topped Shane 6-1, 6-3 at No. 5. Virginia retook the lead when Domijan closed out a 6-2, 7-6(5) win over King at the No. 2 spot. Uriguen topped Muguruza 7-5, 6-3 at No. 6 before Shabaz clinched the victory with his 6-3, 6-4 win over Gomez at No. 1, handing Gomez his only ACC loss of the season. Sanam Singh (Chandigarh, India) added a 6-4, 6-4 win at No. 3 over Potvin and Jenkins closed out the match with a third-set match-tiebreaker win at No. 4 over Magin Ortiga.

"This was a good win over a very good Georgia Tech team," said head coach Brian Boland. "Georgia Tech is No. 15 for a reason and they came out with a lot of energy and gave us a battle. We might not be at 100 percent, but that doesn't take away from the performance of Georgia Tech, who pushed us today. Our guys are competitive and they find a way to get the job done. These matches will only serve to help us in the long run."

The Cavaliers will be the No. 1 seed at this week's ACC Tournament in Cary, N.C., where they will look for their fifth consecutive tournament title. After a first round bye, Virginia will open play on Friday in the quarterfinals.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The University of Virginia has a good history with L.C. Bird High School (Chesterfield, VA). Former Skyhawks Merrill Robertson and Jason Snelling suited up for the orange and blue, and Anthony Harris signed with the Cavaliers in the 2011 football recruiting class. Virginia is now in pursuit of junior linebacker Deon Clarke, a 6-3, 215-pound prospect with scholarship offers from Louisville, Virginia and Virginia Tech.

Skyhawks head coach David Bedwell dishes the latest on Clarke, who recently picked up good news on the academic front. When might the rising senior linebacker make a commitment? Does he have a favorite? Find out in this week's EDGE update.

Clarke will be called upon to take a bigger leadership role for Bird next season. Harris, who started at quarterback and cornerback, leaves a void in that respect. He moves on to UVa, where he will start out at safety.

"I think Anthony could go anywhere and play," Bedwell said. "I think cornerback is where his mind was set, but I know they have a mind on him playing early. Starting at safety might get him on the field a lot earlier. He's not the type of kid to gripe and complain. He just wants to play and help the team. You know, if he keeps getting bigger, he might end up at outside linebacker. He keeps growing."

Other articles coming this week include ...

The fourth edition of "Catching Up With The 2011 Class." Last week's piece featured defensive end Vincent Croce, place-kicker Ian Frye, safety Darius Lee and linebacker DJ Hill. The 6-4, 270-pound Croce was one of the 2011 class leaders in a player panel for 2012 recruits visiting for Virginia's Spring Game. He recalled one question in particular.

"One guy asked if we thought we would be able to compete in the ACC, much less at a national level," Croce said. "I took the mic and kind of went off. I stood up, took a second and composed myself, and I asked if that was a real question. I kind of went from there. Of course, we're going to be ready to compete. We have some of the best players in the Maryland/Virginia area. To me, it's not even a real question."

On the basketball front, I'll check back with Episcopal (Fairfax, VA) guard Kethan Savage, who had planned to visit the University of Virginia. The 6-3, 190-pound junior is one of a handful of point guard prospects the Cavaliers coaches are eyeing.

Parks Commits

One week after attending a junior day at the University of Virginia, West Rowan (Mount Ulla, N.C.) running back Kevin Parks has decided to commit to the Cavaliers. The 5-7, 190-pound prospect left Charlottesville impressed while leaning toward a commitment. After visiting Clemson, East Carolina, and N.C. State this past weekend, he contacted the Virginia coaches today with a verbal commitment.

West Rowan head coach Scott Young confirmed Parks' decision.

Parks has started for his high school team since his freshman year and has improved every season. As a freshman in 2006, he rushed for 1,721 yards and 23 touchdowns and followed that up with a 2,536-yard, 33-touchdown sophomore season. As a junior last season, he rushed for 2,864 yards and 43 touchdowns, helping West Rowan to a Class 3-A State Championship while earning first-team all-state honors.

Total Package Pushing Hoos To Success
Image: Chris TaylorThere are no secrets when it comes to how the top-ranked University of Virginia baseball team has been built over Brian O'Connor's seven-plus years at the helm. The recipe has included outstanding pitching, solid defense, timely hitting, system based talent and superb coaching. 2011 is no different. The question is not why is Virginia playing excellent baseball and winning - the question is why are they doing so at a level far above expectations.

Reinstated Walcott Switching Spots

Walcott had been suspended indefinitely for conduct detrimental to the team since Feb. 8 along with junior center Mike Price and junior cornerback Devin Wallace. Price and Wallace remain suspended. The Sabre Interview: Anthony Poindexter
