On Point With Poindexter TheSabre.com's Mike Ingalls sat down recently for a lengthy one-on-one interview with Cavalier football legend and current secondary coach Anthony Poindexter. This exclusive Sabre EDGE feature is set to hit the site on Tuesday. Here's a sneak peek from a portion of the interview: Mike: Has the game changed at all since you played? If so, talk about how it has changed in terms of player preparation as well as coaching of the athletes and routine. DEX: I hate to sound like an antique, but I'm pretty sure guys would say the same thing when I was a young player, in terms of how much the game has changed. It's like anything; the world changes, society changes, technology changes. ... You look at football now, it ain't the old school, smash mouth football as much anymore. People spread people out, it's more wide open like a fastbreak game. The kids want to get the coach more. When I played I was scared to come talk to my coaches half the time. Mike: Coach Welsh? DEX: [laughing] Yeah, well not many people wanted to talk to Coach Welsh. It was just ... it's different now. Kids are coming in and out of our door all day. I can count on one hand the number of times I was on this side of the building as a player here. I just think the relationships you have with your players is a lot different. You know, I loved my coaches in college. But to an extent I feared them, too. I think that fear factor is out of kids. They don't get coached like that when they're young, that the coach is the top dog. Now, this is how society is. The parents have so much input. When I came up the parents handed their kids to the coach and whatever the coach said, went. No questions asked. Nowadays kids ask more questions, but they have more resources to get knowledge. So if you ain't on point, they're going to question you because they can go find the answer. They'll look on the Internet or Facebook or whatever. I'm not saying it's changed for the bad or changed for the good. Just like anything, times are changing and coaches have to change with the times. Sign up and start living on the Sabre Edge today!

This Week In Recruiting University of Virginia men's basketball recruits Evan Nolte and Mike Tobey were in Hampton this past weekend for the EYBL Nike Invitational. TheSabre.com was on hand for the Saturday games and there's a report, pictures and video from the event. Nolte, a 6-8, 200-pound forward out of Milton (GA), and Tobey, a 6-11 out of Hotchkiss School in Connecticut, are UVa's first two commitments in the 2012 class. The report includes info on other 2012 class prospects as well, including a rising senior combo guard expected to visit Charlottesville in the next week or two. UVa has not offered this prospect, who appears to be one of many potential point guard prospects being evaluated.
On the football recruiting front, Montgomery Bell Academy (Nashville) offensive tackle Blake Bars has become a highly recruited prospect in the state of Tennessee's 2012 class. Virginia is one of nine offers for the 6-6, 265-pound junior, who made Virginia one of his unofficial visit stops earlier this year. I'll have more on Bars, who has also been offered by Florida and seven other FBS programs. In addition to the report on Bars, the 2012 recruiting beat will continue with another "Diary" report from CJ Prosise and continued follow-up from the Spring Game. Also, we'll check back with the 2011 class once more with reports from Good Counsel (Olney, MD) standout defensive end Vincent Croce, recruited walk-on place-kicker Ian Frye, and more.
Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ... University of Virginia 2012 commits Evan Nolte and Mike Tobey made the trek to the Commonwealth this past weekend for the Nike EYBL Hampton. Nolte, a 6-8 forward out of Milton (GA), played for the Southern Kings Gold AAU squad, while the 6-11 center Tobey suited up for the New York Gauchos. In Jonathan Allen and Ryan Burns, Stone Bridge (Ashburn, VA) could potentially have two of the top overall prospects in the state's 2013 recruiting class. UVa Hires Joanne Boyle Joanne Boyle made her debut Monday afternoon as Virginia's fourth women's basketball coach. She brings an impressive resume and a breath of fresh air to a program that has stymied over the past few seasons. After a six-year stint as the coach of the California Golden Bears, in which Cal reached the postseason each year, the Duke alumna returns to ACC country with the goal of respecting the past while still working towards a brighter future for the team. "We wanted someone with a background in equally competitive academic and athletic settings, and we worked to identify that coach that would fit the model of what we've seen are proven characteristics for successful head coaches here at the University of Virginia," UVa athletic director Craig Littlepage said. "These characteristics are those of an educator-coach, one whose career is ascending, educator- coaches that embrace the unique traditions of the University of Virginia, in an academically and athletically competitive environment. When Joanne Boyle was evaluated and compared using those characteristics that were just identified, she was a great fit. She was a perfect match." Boyle's accomplishments as a coach and her personal philosophies regarding player development both on and off the court make her a welcome addition to the Cavalier family. She has embraced the task at and is prepared to put in the work necessary to return the Lady Hoos to their winning ways. "'Don't talk about what you have done or what you are going to do.' Mr. Jefferson's instruction is timeless and well taken," Boyle said during her very first meeting with the press. "The University of Virginia's storied history of excellence and the remarkable people responsible for it compelled me to humbly except the responsibility of being UVa's next women's basketball coach."
