"Get in the Game - Save A Life" On Tuesday

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Virginia football coach Mike London and the Cavalier football team will host the program's second annual bone marrow registry drive as part of the "Get in the Game, Save A Life" program. The drive will take place Tuesday, April 5 between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m. on the patio outside of the Observatory Hill (O-Hill) Dining Hall. The testing drive helps to find matches to treat people with different types of blood and bone marrow cancers and benefits the Be The Match Foundation.

In addition to recruitment efforts prior to the drive, members of the Virginia football team will help with registration during the event.

Virginia's chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha and the student organization, S.A.V.E., are assisting in this year's registration effort. S.A.V.E. stands for Society's Awareness of the Vitality for Everyone and is a student group at UVa that is dedicated to eradicating health disparities within the Charlottesville community. Established in April of 2010, S.A.V.E seeks to bring health information and services to the medically underserved members through community service and monthly forums. Last year the Cavaliers helped register approximately 250 people during the team's inaugural drive. Senior linebacker Trevor Grywatch proved to be an exact match and in October donated his marrow to a recipient.

"Last year was our first attempt at this and at the time I thought the players did a good job, and so did the people that donated," said London. "They were educated about why bone marrow registrations are important because you can eventually end up saving a life. That's the whole premise behind it.

"When Trevor turned out to be a match and helped to save someone's life, that's when everyone really came to realize how much impact something like this can have. We want to exceed what we did last year and thanks to stories like Trevor's, I believe there will be much more interest from our community in becoming involved this year."

The Be The Match Foundation raises funds to help patients in need of bone marrow transplants receive the treatment they need. Participation in the recruitment drive takes 10 to 15 minutes to complete. To join, people need to be between the ages of 18 and 60, willing to donate to any patient in need, and meet health guidelines. Registration is simple, and involves completing a health history form and giving a swab of cheek cells. Personal identification (driver's license or passport) is also required for registration.

Donors with diverse racial or ethnic backgrounds are especially critical. If a match is found, the donor will asked to go to a local hospital to donate some of their blood.

For thousands of patients with life-threatening diseases, such as leukemia and lymphoma, a marrow transplant from an unrelated donor is their best or only hope for a cure. These patients depend on the Be The Match Registry to find a match - and a second chance at life.

Bone marrow donation is especially important to London. In 2003 he donated bone marrow to his daughter Ticynn, who had a rare blood disorder.

"Almost everyone has a relative, a friend, or knows a person who has been or is in need of medical attention and intervention," London said. "There are people who are in need of a life-saving opportunity that perhaps you can provide. Don't sit on the sidelines and watch and hope nothing happens to you or a loved one. Get in the game like I did and perhaps save a life. The best game plan in life is to be an active participant."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The Virginia men's basketball program scored a big recruit late last week, when 6'8" small forward Evan Nolte pledged to the Hoos. The Milton (GA) star, who has averaged approximately 15 points and seven rebounds per game each of the past two seasons for one of Georgia's top prep programs, chose UVa over offers from Florida, Georgia, Georgia Tech, Ohio State, and others.

Virginia now has two commitments in its 2012 class, and both prospects are slated to play in this coming weekend's Nike Invitational AAU tournament in Hampton (VA). TheSabre.com will be there for more with Nolte and 6'11" center Mike Tobey, so stay tuned.

While the men's basketball program received the headlines on Friday, the football program took the stage on Saturday. Some of Virginia's top 2012 targets made their way to the Spring Game, which appears to have impressed.

A "Sunday Recruiting Notes" post is up on the EDGE; updates are included with Oscar Smith (Chesapeake, VA) RB J.C. Coleman, Charlotte Catholic (Charlotte, N.C.) OL Mark Harrell, Christchurch (VA) OL Win Homer and DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) DE Michael Moore. We'll continue to reach prospects - Thomas Dale (Chester, VA) ATH Desmond Frye, Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, VA) LB Kwontie Moore, Woodberry Forest (VA) S CJ Prosise, Brookwood (Snellville, GA) RB Nick Tompkins and Norfolk Christian DL Courtnye Wynn are among the other confirmed visitors - for further reaction this week, so stay tuned to the EDGE board for much more.

This week, I'll have a "Weekend News and Notes" feature with full updates on the aforementioned prospects as well as Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) WR/S Anthony Cooper, who was not in attendance Saturday but did attend the practice in Hampton. He has thoughts on this as well as an upcoming visit to Charlottesville.

The Spring Game wasn't the only significant recruiting day on the football front, as Virginia hosted a pair of top in-state targets last week. L.C. Bird (Chesterfield, VA) LB Deon Clarke was in Charlottesville last Wednesday, while Hermitage (Richmond, VA) OL/DT Andre Miles-Redmond visited on Friday. I'll have a profile up on Miles-Redmond early this week, and I hope to have more on Clarke as well.

I'll also have another "Catching Up With The 2011 Class" segment this week with focus on the Spring Game.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

4-Star Nolte Decides For UVa

Image: Evan NolteThe University of Virginia men's basketball program has its second commitment of the 2012 class. Milton (GA) small forward Evan Nolte, ranked a 4-star prospect by ESPN, Rivals.com, and Scout.com, informed Cavaliers head coach Tony Bennett of his decision last night.

Top Target Profile: DeMatha DE Michael Moore

Image: Michael MooreDespite being the son of former University of Virginia star and NFL quarterback Shawn Moore, Michael Moore hasn't always been a football-first athlete. On the contrary, basketball was Moore's first love, until it became apparent that his athletic future was much brighter on the gridiron.

Spring Practice Wraps Up This Week

The Virginia football team's annual Spring Game took place this past weekend at Scott Stadium and the Blue team defeated the Orange, 17-7. Unlike past years, however, spring practice is not over. The Hoos will practice for one more week with four sessions scheduled. UVa coach Mike London indicated before the spring practices began that the coaches would use the sessions after the Spring Game to focus on particular areas of need as determined by the coordinators (Offensive Coordinator Bill Lazor and Defensive Coordinator Jim Reid).

There are two more public practices that give fans a chance to follow the team as well. On Friday, April 8 (6-8 a.m.) and Saturday, April 9 (12 to 2 p.m.), the program's practices at the McCue Center football practice fields are open to the public. Stay tuned to TheSabre.com for more coverage on the football team's spring practices.

Season tickets for 2011 Virginia football home games are on sale to all fans. Under second-year coach Mike London, the Cavaliers' seven game home schedule includes dates with William & Mary (Sept. 3), Southern Mississippi (Sept. 24), Idaho (Oct. 1), Georgia Tech (Oct. 15), N.C. State (Oct. 22), Duke (Nov. 12) and Virginia Tech (Nov. 26). Remember, TheSabre.com set up its football schedule page for fans; remember that each game will have a game information page once the season begins.

UVa Baseball Sweeps Virginia Tech

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The top-ranked Virginia baseball team completed a three-game series sweep of Virginia Tech with a 10-2 triumph Sunday afternoon at English Field in Blacksburg. In outscoring the Hokies 37-8 in the series, Virginia ran its win streak to nine games and improved to 28-2 this season, including an 11-1 mark in ACC play. UVa is off to its best 30-game start in program history.

Virginia used strong pitching and defense as well as timely hitting to roll to the win. John Barr led the Cavaliers with three hits. Kenny Swab went 2 for 3 with three runs scored, while Chris Taylor posted a pair of hits and scored twice.

Virginia starting pitcher Cody Winiarski (Sr., Franksville, Wis.) worked five scoreless innings, giving up four hits and a walk while striking out two. He earned the win and improved to 4-1 this season. Virginia Tech starter Joe Parsons (4-2) pitched three innings, allowing five earned runs and six hits.

UVa Hires Schmidt As Softball Coach

Official Release, Virginia Athletic Media Relations

Virginia athletics director Craig Littlepage has announced the hiring of Eileen Schmidt as the Cavaliers new softball coach. A former standout player for UVa in the early 90s, Schmidt replaces Karen Johns who announced her resignation May 23.

"I am tremendously enthused that Eileen Schmidt will rejoin the UVa softball program as our head softball coach," Littlepage said. "She understands the experiences of our student-athletes and will be a leader, mentor, and role model for our players. In addition, her years as a head coach and assistant coach uniquely prepare her to move our softball program forward."

Schmidt, a native of Barto, Pa., competed for Virginia from 1991 to 1994. She was the first Cavalier softball player to earn All-ACC honors three times (1992, 1993 and 1994) and became Virginia's first All-American. Schmidt, a catcher, captured third-team All-America accolades in 1994. She was named the ACC Player of the Year in 1993 and was chosen to the ACC All-Tournament Team in 1993 and 1994.

"The University of Virginia has always been a special place and I am honored to return as the head softball coach," Schmidt said. "It was an extremely difficult decision to leave the University of Kentucky and the program we've worked very hard to build. I want to thank Mitch Barnhart and John Cropp for giving me the opportunity and trust to lead the Kentucky softball program over the past three years. I am thankful I had the opportunity to work with a phenomenal group of student-athletes, colleagues, administration, and softball community. Virginia has always been my dream job, the place where I wanted to finish my career and I want to thank Craig Littlepage for bringing that dream to fruition. I am excited about re-joining the Virginia family and looking forward to recruiting the best student-athletes to wear Blue and Orange."

Quarterback Race Still A Mystery
Image: Michael RoccoFor three straight Saturdays, Virginia fans have gotten live looks at the Cavalier quarterbacks. For three straight Saturdays, there has been no consensus on an obvious front runner. That fact has been consistent throughout spring practice. That's the challenge facing the UVa coaches as the Hoos enter their final week of practice following Saturday's Spring Game.

Spring Game: Penalties, Captains, Awards
Two of the Cavaliers three touchdowns Saturday afternoon were followed by something college football fans might need to get a lot more accustomed to seeing next season - excessive celebration penalties. Plus, the Cavaliers announced their spring award winners and team captains at halftime of the Spring Game at Scott Stadium.

Blue Tops Orange In Spring Game
After a freak hailstorm threatened to rain all over coach Mike London's parade, the sun came out for Virginia's Spring Game, which featured Orange vs. Blue. The team had a chance to test its skills and preparation in a more game-like atmosphere. The Blue team defeated Orange 17-7, and London and his staff have plenty of film to analyze heading into the last week of spring practice.

Expectations High For UVa's O-Line
Image: Offensive LineMike London's first season on the job at Virginia finished with a 4-8 record, but along the way there were some surprises both good and bad. While the defense has been dissected as the disappointing variety, the offensive line may have been the biggest positive shocker for the 2010 season. After all, entering the campaign, outside observers had the unit pegged as a hodge-podge of starters with little depth for reassurance. In the end, the O-Line paved the way for the ACC's leading scorer, a record-setting pair of receivers, and a noticeable improvement across the board.

Roberts Perfect For Cavaliers
Image: Will RobertsBaseball's ultimate individual achievement is the perfect game. Twenty-seven batters up, twenty-seven batters retired. No hits, no walks, no free bases. Only seven pitchers in NCAA Division I had ever thrown a nine-inning perfect game. Until Tuesday night that is. Virginia's own Will Roberts made history Tuesday against George Washington University by becoming the eighth pitcher to achieve perfection and the first in school history.

Where's The Buzz? Trapped In Wait And See
Image: Michael RoccoI don't know if it is because it is still March. Perhaps it is the morning practices limiting live views of the team. Maybe it is because this is Final Four weekend and hoops are on the brain. But whatever it is, there's a decided lack of buzz about Virginia's Spring Game and football practice this spring. To me, that's an indicator of something bigger at work here for UVa fans.
