UVa Draws Miami In ACC Tournament The Virginia men's basketball team opens ACC Tournament play on Thursday at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C. The Cavaliers are seeded eighth in the tournament and play ninth-seeded Miami in the tournament's first game at noon. The game will be televised by the ACC Network and broadcast by the Virginia Sports Radio Network. The Hoos and the Hurricanes locked up on Feb. 5 in Miami and the Canes escaped with a 70-68 win in overtime. UVa held a five-point lead late in regulation, but missed free throws down the stretch and got called for fouling a 3-point shooter as well in the final minute. The Cavaliers finished 9 of 22 from the free throw line in that contest, making more 3-pointers and shooting a higher percentage from behind the arc than from the free throw line. Virginia would like to redeem itself for that performance in the league tournament. The two teams have met once in the ACC Tournament with Virginia winning 66-65 in 2005. 2011 ACC Tournament Schedule
Thursday, March 10 - First Round
Friday, March 11 - Quarterfinals
Saturday, March 12 - Semifinals
Sunday, March 13 - Championship

Recruiting News | |||||
This Week In Recruiting Virginia men's basketball has a commitment from 6-11 Mike Tobey, but head coach Tony Bennett and company continue to search for a second low post prospect in the 2012 class. Virginia Episcopal School (Lynchburg, VA) power forward Ifeanyi Onyekaba and Roanoke Catholic (Roanoke, VA) center Andre Washington are under the Cavaliers' microscope, though neither has been offered at this point. The Roanoke Times had some info on the 6-11 Washington, who has been offered by Wake Forest. As for Onyekaba, this report indicates that Bennett scouted the 6-8 junior last week. VES is guided by former Virginia star guard Curtis Staples. I hope to have more on both prospects this week on The Sabre EDGE.
A pair of Virginia 2011 football signees will square off on the basketball court this week. L.C. Bird (Chesterfield, VA) DB Anthony Harris and T.C. Williams (Alexandria, VA) offensive tackle Jay Whitmire will lead their respective teams in the Group AAA State Semifinals on Wednesday. Kameron Mack, another 2011 football signee for the Cavaliers, starts for I.C. Norcom (Portsmouth, VA), which takes on Highland Springs in the other semifinal.
This week, I check in with Brenden Motley, a 6-4, 190-pound junior quarterback/athlete out of Christiansburg High School in Virginia. Motley has been offered by Virginia Tech and is receiving serious interest from the Cavaliers. He told me Sunday night that he plans on taking in a spring practice at UVa, so we'll see if he garners an offer at that point. An in-state 2012 talent already holding a Virginia offer is Norfolk Christian (Norfolk, VA) linebacker Kwontie Moore. Moore has been to UVa before and plans to return sometime this month or next, but at this time he has not decided if he will check out a practice, a junior day or the Spring Game in Charlottesville. Whenever he visits, though, he'll likely do so alongside fellow Norfolk Christian juniors Mario Nixon (WR) and Courtnye Wynn (DT/TE). Virginia has offered all three Norfolk Christian prospects. The usual 2012 recruiting beat continues this week, so be sure to check out the EDGE board as well as the EDGE articles for further updates.

UVa Football Schedule Virginia released the 2011 football schedule last week. TheSabre.com set up its football schedule page for fans; remember that each game will have a game information page once the season begins.
Must Read: Emotional Afternoon Ends Well Jeff White, VirginiaSports.com The rain fell and fell and fell at Klockner Stadium. And then it fell some more Sunday afternoon, until finally the officials working the women's lacrosse game between UVa and Penn State had seen -- and splashed -- enough. They concluded that conditions at Klockner, where pools of water stood everywhere on the soaked field, had become too dangerous for the players. And so the officials halted the game with 22:29 left in the second half and, after meeting with UVa representatives, decided to move everyone across Copeley Road to the University Hall Turf Field. With that, an emotional afternoon for everyone associated with the UVa women's program took an unusual and unforgettable twist. But the change of venue didn't deter the Cavaliers on a day they were honoring the memory of Yeardley Love. The Wahoos led 8-4 when the game was stopped, and they led 10-5 when it finally ended. "It was definitely one of the crazier games," Virginia coach Julie Myers said, "starting on one surface, going to another, having torrential downpours to light drizzle to a little bit of everything. "But all in all, we're glad that we got the game in today and that so many people were able to go from one venue to the next. We definitely played sloppy at times, and we told the girls, 'You don't always have to win pretty.' So it was nice to see that we could come out on top, even though we made about a million mistakes today." In a ceremony before the game, UVa athletics director Craig Littlepage presented Miss Love's sister, Lexie, and mother, Sharon, with a framed No. 1 jersey. That was Miss Love's number when she played for Myers, and it will be retired in the UVa women's program. A video was shown that included footage of Miss Love playing for the Cavaliers. Then, at the south end of the stadium, former UVa players Kaitlin Duff, Whit Hagerman, Brittany Kalkstein, Marye Kellermann and Caity Whiteley raised a blue flag on which was depicted Miss Love's number and her last name. The flag will fly at all Virginia women's lacrosse games at Klockner.

Issue No. 114 - Nov. 21, 2003 Virginia basketball gets two signees 5-11 point guard Sean Singletary and 6-7 small forward Adrian Joseph have signed letters of intent to play for the University of Virginia. Both are eligible for play next season. Singletary, of Philadephia, PA, is highly touted and will be the future point guard for the program. The point guard's assets are his speed, defensive play and court vision. Most times, Singletary has made up his mind and passed the ball prior to getting across half court. While passing is his specialty, Singletary is not shy when shooting the ball and can hit the open shot when needed. Singletary averaged 18 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds and almost 5 steals per game as a junior while leading his team to their league championship and a 26-4 record. Joseph, a native of Trinidad, is currently attending Brewster Academy in New Hampshire. He averaged 15 points, 7 rebounds and 3 blocks as a junior last season. |
