   Recruiting News

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Virginia football will host a junior day on Wednesday. TheSabre.com will provide coverage leading up to and following the junior day. First, I'll feature Central Catholic (Allentown, PA) quarterback Brendan Nosovitch, who will be one of those visitors on Wednesday.

UVa's coaches, led by primary recruiter Mike Faragalli, began recruiting the talented signal caller last summer. A scholarship was offered before the end of the 2010 season, in which Nosovitch guided Central Catholic to a state championship and an undefeated record. Currently, the Cavaliers are the only program to offer Nosovitch, who is also drawing interest from Penn State and Rutgers, among others.

I caught up with ACCSports.com Editor Dave Glenn, who covers several topics regarding 2011 class football recruiting in the ACC. As always, Glenn does a superb job, and here is a sample from the upcoming Q&A feature:

The best UVa signee? The highest-rated players were Maryland athlete Darius Jennings, Virginia Beach cornerback Demetrious Nicholson, Maryland defensive back Brandon Phelps, Newport News running back Clifton Richardson and Manassas athlete Dominique Terrell. These things are merely educated guesses, of course, but I'll say this: I'll be very surprised if Jennings doesn't turn out to be a very good player, and I wouldn't bet against Alexandria offensive tackle Jay Whitmire, either.

This week on the EDGE ...

  • Article on QB Nosovitch
  • More 2011 class analysis in a Sabre Roundtable with JHoo, Kamikaze Hoo, Chris Horne and Greg Waters
  • Feature article on Virginia men's basketball recruit Paul Jesperson
  • Coverage of Virginia's Feb. 16 junior day

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Q&A with 4-Star Recruit Darius Jennings
Image: Darius JenningsGilman (Baltimore, MD) wide receiver Darius Jennings made his college choice the Monday of Signing Day week. As we now know, the 5-11, 175-pound senior decided to take his talents to the University of Virginia over offers from Ohio State and Wake Forest, among many others. Jennings took some time this evening to discuss his decision, when he committed, the future of Virginia football and more in this "Q&A."

Slotting The 2011 Class
Image: Demetrious NicholsonAnother Signing Day has come and gone ... and so the fun begins for me. Sure, following who is going to go where is of interest, but what really interests me is whom who has gone here will go where (or something like that).

ACC Baseball On TV

According to an ACC Official News Release, at least 44 baseball games featuring Atlantic Coast Conference teams are scheduled to be telecast during the 2011 season, Commissioner John Swofford announced on Monday. The slate of games includes eight Saturday afternoon broadcasts of ACC games on the Regional Sports Network, a group of regionally-based outlets that will provide coverage to all areas of the league’s geographical footprint. In addition, RSN will carry all 13 games of the 2011 ACC Championship, scheduled for May 25-29 at Durham (N.C.) Bulls Athletic Park. This will mark the fourth consecutive season that RSN will carry all of the ACC Championship games live.

The following Virginia games are currently slated for TV: N.C. State at Virginia (April 23, 1 p.m., RSN), Miami at Virginia (May 14, 1 p.m., RSN; May 15, 1 p.m., CSS). Around the World of Wahoo Sports ...

  • Virginia Upends No. 11 Maryland, 60-57: The Virginia women's basketball team upset 11th-ranked Maryland, 60-57, on the road Sunday at Comcast Center. Ariana Moorer led all scorers with 17 points, while Whitny Edwards added 13 points. The win followed a thrilling 94-92 victory against N.C. State on Thursday in quadruple overtime. It was the longest game in either program's history. Moorer made a buzzer-beating running lay-up as time expired to give the Cavaliers the victory in that contest.
  • Virginia Signee Bria Smith Named a McDonald's High School All-American: Bria Smith, who signed a National Letter of Intent to play for the Virginia women's basketball team beginning in the fall of 2011, has been selected to play in the McDonald's High School All-American game. A native of Massapequa, N.Y., Smith is a 5-9 guard out of perennial powerhouse Christ the King High School in Queens, N.Y. In December, Smith was named one of the 10 players to the Naismith Trophy High School Player of the Year Watch List.
  • Men's Tennis Downs Boston College 7-0: The top-ranked Virginia men's tennis team was victorious in its first road match of the season, downing Boston College 7-0 Sunday at the Weymouth Club. The Cavaliers improve to 10-0 this season (3-0 ACC) and extended their ACC-record win streak to 66 straight wins against conference competition. The Hoos also defeated Virginia Tech on Friday, 6-1.
  • Women's Tennis Downs Marshall and Winthrop: The Virginia women's tennis team remained unbeaten on the season as it swept a Saturday doubleheader at the Boyd Tinsley Courts at the Boar's Head Sports Club. The Cavaliers defeated No. 55 Marshall 6-1 in the first match of the day and No. 66 Winthrop 7-0 in the second match. The No. 25 Cavaliers are 6-0 on the season, the best start to a season in school history. The previous best start was 4-0, done four times, most recently in 2006.
  • Virginia Wrestling Rolls Past Duke, Appalachian State: The Virginia wrestling team posted a pair of home wins Saturday at Memorial Gymnasium, blanking Duke, 40-0, before defeating Appalachian State, 31-8. With the shutout of Duke, Virginia recorded its first ACC shutout since a 44-0 victory at Duke on Jan. 16, 1984. The wins helped UVa bounce back from a tough 19-16 loss at Maryland on Friday night.
  • Seven Individuals Win Events at Terrapin Invitational: Members of the Virginia men's and women's swimming teams concluded competition Saturday at Maryland's Terrapin Invitational. Seven individuals won events on the final day while the men's 400 freestyle relay team was also victorious.

Wright Becomes UVa's All-Time Leading Scorer

UVa Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Monica Wright scored 20 points to pass Dawn Staley as the women's career scoring leader in Virginia history, but No. 23 Virginia lost 61-60 to Maryland on Monday night.

Wright, a preseason All-American and the ACC's Preseason Player of the Year, came into the game needing 16 points to pass Staley's total of 2,135 points. Staley, the best player in school history, played from 1989-92 and was a two-time national player of the year. She was also the Cavaliers assists leader until Sharneé Zoll passed her record in February 2008. Wright now has 2,140 points for her career.

Staley, who now coaches at South Carolina, also led the Cavaliers to three consecutive Final Four appearances.

Florida State Takes Down UVa
Image: Joe HarrisMaybe it can be blamed on the location - the Virginia men's basketball team has dropped 14 straight games in Florida after all. Truthfully, however, the Cavaliers' 63-56 loss at Florida State did not come out of some Bermuda Triangle style curse. No, the story still focuses on themes from this frustrating ACC season - plenty of effort, but not enough post depth, not enough experience, and not enough consistency with shooting or defense.

Catching Up With Marquis Weeks
Image: Marquis WeeksSometimes, life takes you places you don't necessarily expect. For former Cavalier football standout Marquis Weeks, fate has taken him full circle in a few different ways. It's not true what they say; you really can go home again.
