Scott To Miss Rest Of Season

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia senior forward Mike Scott (Chesapeake, Va.) will undergo a second operation on his left ankle and miss the remainder of the 2010-11 season. The 6-8 Scott had arthroscopic surgery on Dec. 16 to remove loose pieces of cartilage from the ankle. The second surgery is for additional cartilage work and to remove impinging bone spurs. He is expected to return to full activity in three to four months.

Scott has not played in six of Virginia's last seven games.

"Obviously we are going to miss having Mike on the court, but the most important consideration is what's best for him," said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. "He will have the operation and focus on taking care of rehabilitating his ankle. In his absence all of our players will need to continue to step up and our young frontcourt players will continue to gain valuable experience."

It is expected that the paperwork necessary to request a medical hardship enabling Scott to retain a year of eligibility will be filed.

Scott has played in 10 games this season and leads the Cavaliers in scoring (15.9 ppg.) and rebounding (10.2 rpg.) average. He has six double-doubles, including a stretch of five double-doubles in a row. He is the first Virginia player to have five consecutive double-doubles since Ralph Sampson in 1983.

Scott was named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Week on Dec. 6 for his play in the Cavaliers' victories at Minnesota (Nov. 29) and Virginia Tech (Dec. 5).

Sabre staff note: TheSabre.com's sources indicate that Scott's intentions right now are to undergo rehabilitation, apply for the medical hardship waiver, and, if granted, return to Virginia next season.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

The spring semester at the University of Virginia begins on Jan. 19. Hampton (VA) quarterback David Watford and Phoebus (Hampton, VA) linebacker Daquan Romero are less than two weeks away from enrolling at UVa, and I'll have articles on both prospects this week.

Watford and Romero are the latest Virginia recruits to gain early admission. Williamsburg native Will Hill, a defensive tackle, did so in 2009, while quarterback Michael Strauss enrolled last January. Early enrollment is advantageous for any college program, allowing for more flexibility in terms of scholarship numbers. If this continues to be a success for Virginia, look for Mike London and company to continue to take advantage and shoot for one to two early enrollments in each class.

Virginia has 24 commitments in its 2011 class. The number was 25, but H.D. Woodson (Washington, D.C.) tight end Darius Redman de-committed from the Cavaliers last week in favor of Virginia Tech. Redman, a 6-4, 240-pound prospect, was Virginia's only true tight end commit of the class, so we'll see if the staff turns to any other recruits to try and fill the spot. With limited scholarships, though, that may prove difficult.

I caught up with North Cobb (Kennesaw, GA) tight end prospect Max Mason over the weekend and will have an update posted soon, but for now it appears Virginia isn't in hot pursuit of the versatile recruit. Southern Miss and Vanderbilt are currently the top two for Mason.

Three Virginia targets will be making official visits elsewhere this week. They include Irving (TX) defensive end Horace Arkadie, Hermitage (Richmond, VA) linebacker Curtis Grant and Gilman (Baltimore, MD) athlete Darius Jennings. Arkadie will trek to Arkansas, Grant to Florida and Jennings to Wake Forest.

This week, I'll have a "Final Stretch" article giving my thoughts on these targets and more, so stay tuned.

On the basketball recruiting front, in case you missed it Virginia picked up its first 2012 commitment last week in 6-11 center Mike Tobey. Tobey, who chose the Cavaliers over offers from Northwestern and Pitt, among others, took some time to talk to TheSabre.com about his commitment. EDGE subscribers can read more on the promising prospect in an article posted last week.

It was a good news/bad news scenario for Virginia last week. Days after Tobey committed, Virginia lost out on one of its top point guard targets in the 2012 class. Linn Marr (Marion, IA) junior Marcus Paige pledged to North Carolina over offers from Virginia, Kansas, and many others.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Lee Performs Well On Big Stage
Image: Darius LeeFor Darius Lee, being selected to play in the December 30 Chesapeake Bowl was an opportunity to showcase his talents against a high level of competition (over 70 FBS prospects selected to play). The 6-2, 200-pound senior, a standout safety/linebacker out of St. Stephen's & St. Agnes School (Alexandria, VA), relished the opportunity and left feeling good about his performance.

Tobey Becomes UVa's First 2012 Commit
The Virginia men's basketball program got more than just a win over LSU on Sunday. Head coach Tony Bennett and company scored their first commitment of the 2012 class in 6-11 center Mike Tobey. Tobey, who is attending The Hotchkiss School (Lakeville, CT), committed to the Hoos over offers from Miami, Northwestern, Pittsburgh, Siena and Xavier. Notre Dame, Stanford and Wake Forest showed interest as well.

Hendy To Visit UVa
Image: Jeremiah HendyThere aren't many targets left in the University of Virginia's 2011 football recruiting class, but Bowie (MD) defensive back Jeremiah "AJ" Hendy is one of them. The 6-1, 190-pound senior is considering UVa and several others after de-committing from Maryland.

Virginia Baseball Close to Breakthrough

Will the disappointing end to this season become a driving force for Sean Doolittle and the Cavalier baseball team?

Certainly, many University of Virginia baseball fans have been watching the College World Series with interest. Why? That's simple. Miami, Georgia Tech, Clemson, and North Carolina all advanced to the CWS this season - the Cavaliers beat each of those teams at least once in 2006.

Of course, one ACC team fared better than the rest in Omaha as the Tar Heels advanced to the final to face Oregon State for the National Championship. That's actually good news for Hoo fans. After all, the Cavaliers defeated North Carolina 2 out of 3 times this season. In total, the Hoos topped CWS participants Miami twice, Clemson three times, GT once, and UNC twice. In other words, the UVa baseball program is extremely close to a breakthrough of a major proportions.

The last remaining stumbling block has been the postseason where the Cavaliers have made three straight NCAA Regional appearances, but have yet to reach the Super Regional round. With such a young team this season, perhaps the disappointment of losing in the regional round at home this season will be a driving force for the program. Tasting defeat in the 2005 postseason led the UVa men's lacrosse team down a path of unending hardwork and dedication, which helped the 2006 Cavaliers roll to the National Championship. If the baseball team takes on a similar year-long drive to erase the disappointing end to this record-breaking season, then 2007 could hold a breakthrough moment for Brian O'Connor and company.

Heels Nab ACC Win At UVa
Image: Tony BennettA spirited effort, particularly defensively, had the Virginia fans at the John Paul Jones Arena excited and anticipating a win against North Carolina on Saturday. A late scoring drought, part of an overall second-half struggle on offense, quickly took the air out of that potential upset balloon though. The Tar Heels closed on an 18-7 run in the final 7:48 to steal one in Charlottesville 62-56. The Hoos did not score for a critical 3:44 spell during the game's closing stretch.

Farrakhan Finds His Way
Image: Mustapha FarrakhanWith lingering injuries to Will Sherrill and Mike Scott, much of the offensive load has been dumped into the lap of Mustapha Farrakhan. "I just try and play the game the same way every time and if my shot is there I shoot it and if not, pass the ball," says Farrakhan. Fans hope a hot-shooting Farrakhan and his fellow Hoos play a winning game this weekend against North Carolina as ACC play reopens for the Cavaliers.

Hoos Handle Howard
Image: Mustapha FarrakhanLed by senior guard Mustapha Farrakhan's 31-point performance, the Cavaliers continued their positive play and delivered a convincing win over Howard University to close out their non-conference schedule. Virginia struggled earlier this season against lesser opponents, and took some time getting up to speed against the Bison, but eventually handled Howard 84-63 at home on Tuesday night.

Adjustments Help Hoos' Offense
Image: Jontel EvansThe 2010 portion of Virginia's men's basketball schedule wrapped up with a pair of losses and the team struggling to find anything resembling consistency on offense. The Cavaliers couldn't frequently generate post touches without Mike Scott in the line-up and opponents started to jam jumpshooters and crowd driving lanes in helpside defense. The strategy, really, was simple - turn UVa into a slashing and driving team instead of a catch-and-shoot team. It worked. Until the Hoos started to make some adjustments, which paid off in a win against LSU.

Hoos Must Improve Defense For 2011
Image: Coach Mike LondonAs bowl season winds down, teams are already starting to gear up for the 2011. Spring practice seems far off in the distance, while September and the beginning of another Cavalier football campaign seems eons away. However, the next season begins when its predecessor ends, and there is no doubt that head coach Mike London and his team of assistants and coordinators are already hard at work preparing for year two.
