Sherrill Showing Toughness

Will Sherrill knocked down two late 3-pointers to help seal the victory vs. LSU.

When Virginia senior forward Will Sherrill crumpled to the floor against Minnesota on Nov. 29 in the ACC-Big 10 Challenge, it didn't look good to say the least. How could it when the Gophers' 6'10", 258-pound Colton Iverson fell on top of Sherrill's leg? The official news that followed was that Sherrill fractured his fibula on the play. If you had told me at the time that Sherrill would return in time for UVa's Dec. 30 game with Iowa State, just one month and one day after the injury, I wouldn't have believed you. I might have called you crazy. Four weeks?

The seniors' speedy return tells you one thing without question: Sherrill is one tough customer.

"Aw, he's the toughest guy on this team by far. Not many guys that I know would play even with the injury that he's had," Cavalier freshman KT Harrell said. "I'm just glad to be his teammate. That toughness wears off on everybody else. Everybody else becomes tougher just as he is. He's a leader for our team and we all appreciate him."

Sherrill, meanwhile, brushes it off as a matter of pain tolerance. He is wearing a heavily taped right leg with a fiberglass pad underneath.

"Yeah, straight pain tolerance. The bone is healed enough where it's not really going to break more. It's just trying to man up I guess," Sherrill said with a smile. "It's definitely tough. At the beginning of the second half, I played for like two minutes and I had to get a sub because it was pretty painful. It will go in stretches where it will feel good then it might get kicked or I'll land awkwardly so I just try to take it possession by possession."

A tough challenge? Yeah, you could say that. Playing on that leg hurts. I watched Sherrill hobble out of the room after meeting with reporters last week. On Sunday, he sat with an ice bag wrapped around the leg, something he has to do several times a day, especially after practices and games. He also has an electric stimulation kit that he frequently holds on the leg when away from the John Paul Jones Arena to help with the healing process.

In other words, that's one tough dude.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Five University of Virginia 2011 class football recruits - Rob Burns, Vincent Croce, Marco Jones, Darius Lee and Jordan Lomax - participated in the Dec. 30 Chesapeake Bowl. TheSabre.com was on hand to cover the event, and EDGE subscribers will be able to read more.

In last week's write-up, Croce, a 6-4, 250-pound senior out of Good Counsel (Olney, MD), discusses his performance in the Chesapeake Bowl, Virginia's 2011 class, and more. Also, Gilman (Baltimore, MD) athlete Darius Jennings, one of Virginia's top remaining targets, reveals his three finalists.

EDGE subscribers can read more this week on another one of Virginia's remaining targets, Bowie (MD) cornerback Jeremiah Hendy. Hendy performed at the Chesapeake Bowl as well and looked good as a physical corner with good tackling ability. Originally committed to Maryland, he has reopened his recruitment and plans to take official visits to Penn State and Virginia this month.

Keeping on the all-star game front, Virginia fans should tune in to ESPN on Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 7 p.m. for the Under Armour All-American Bowl. Virginia's newest commitment, Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) cornerback Demetrious "Trey" Nicholson, is set to play in the game, which features top prospects from all across the country.

Virginia has 25 commitments in its 2011 football recruiting class, though quarterback David Watford and linebacker Daquan Romero are set to enroll this month. I'll have more on the final stretch of Virginia's recruiting, including what prospects top the list as just four weeks remain until Signing Day.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Chesapeake Bowl News And Notes
Image: Vince CroceThe inaugural Chesapeake Bowl took place last night in Towson, Maryland, with the South defeating the North in a 30-27 thriller. Virginia was well represented at the event, with five commits including linebacker/defensive end Vincent Croce taking the field. Read more on Croce as well as top target Darius Jennings, who revealed after the game that he has narrowed his list to three.

Commitment Updates: Mack, Redman
Image: Kameron MackKameron Mack may not be one of Virginia's most high profile recruits in the 2011 class, but he is important on several fronts. For one, Virginia gained his commitment over in-state rival Virginia Tech. Most importantly, though, he gives the Cavaliers a promising athlete with potential at a number of positions.

Nicholson Excited About Future At UVa
Image: Demetrious Nicholson2010 Gatorade Player of the Year in the state of Virginia. Under Armour All-American. 2010 Tidewater Player of the Year. Demetrious Nicholson's list of accolades is impressive, and they give insight into how good a player the 5-9, 165-pound senior has been at Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA). Virginia head coach Mike London needs playmakers such as this in his program, a big reason why the Beach star committed to the Cavaliers.

First Annual Cavalier Football Festival

Last Saturday, the Cavalier football team conducted their final spring practice in front of approximately 4,000 fans, players' families and recruits at Scott Stadium.

While the game wasn't a full-fledged scrimmage, scoring was conducted for offensive and defensive plays. The offense won the contest by a score of 76-70. Starting junior QB Matt Schaub was 7 of 16 for 89 yards passing with one interception and a touchdown. After gathering a high snap, Schaub threw a pass behind receiver Michael McGrew which was stolen by starting cornerback Art Thomas and prompty returned it 41 yards for a touchdown. For the most part, Schaub was on the mark. His touchdown came when he found receiver Ottowa Anderson down the left sideline for a 20-yard reception.

Back-up redshirt freshman quarterback Marques Hagans looked promising, going 8 of 15 for 49 yards passing. He threw for one touchdown and added an interception as well, this one to walkon defensive back Trey Moeller.

Defensively, defensive back Chris Williams, tackle Justin Walker and linebacker Melvin Massey led the Hoos with six tackles each. Linebackers Angelo Crowell and Raymond Mann, as well as safety Jerton Evans recorded five stops each.

The highlight for the team defensively seemed to be the play of Thomas, who, in addition to his interception for a score, broke up a beautiful pass to receiver Billy McMullen that would have resulted in another offensive score.

It was the first time the Cavaliers have had access to their home stadium for a spring game since 1998.

In 1999, the Hoos played the game at Albemarle High School. In 2000 and 2001, they played at Klockner Stadium, which is designed primarily for soccer and lacrosse. Last season, the Dave Matthews Band concert prevented the Hoos from using their home field. The two springs prior, the stadium was under renovation and closed to the public for safety reasons.

The Hoos' return to Scott Stadium was nothing short of a success. The rain held off until near the end of the event, although the remainder of the scrimmage was cancelled do to a threatening storm system in the area.

Cavaliers Lance LSU
Image: KT HarrellThe statistics panels on the John Paul Jones Arena scoreboard did not light up when the Virginia men's basketball team faced LSU on Sunday. No, the Cavaliers didn't shoot the lights out. Fortunately, however, the Hoos did somewhat shake off an offensive slump - six players scored at least 8 points as the team shot 40.4% from the field, including 45.8% in the second half - in a 64-50 win that snapped a two-game skid.

Resolutions And Wishes For A New Year
Image: John HicksIs that "Auld Lang Syne" I hear, ushering in the New Year? Nah, that's just The Good Old Song. The nostalgia is starting to creep over me as I enter my last semester as a UVa student, and some of my hopes and resolutions are indicative of my approaching status as an alumnus. While I have plenty that aren't necessarily sports related (a real-world, adult job would be nice, along with world peace and bipartisan agreement, of course), some Wahoo athletic triumphs continue to make the list.

Cyclones Breeze Past Virginia
Image: KT HarrellWith Mike Scott sitting again, the Virginia men's basketball team's recent struggles continued on Thursday night as Iowa State popped into town and dropped the Cavaliers 60-47. UVa scored a paltry 15 points in the first half and managed just 45 overall, both home records for futility in the John Paul Jones Arena as the December doldrums on offense extended through another miserable shooting night.

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2010 ... Season
Image: Keith PayneUVa won more games in 2010 than it did in 2009 ... but if you were judging progress in 2010 by the number of wins, you likely were disappointed. Still, there was much to learn from what we saw from the program off and on the field this year. Here are 10 things that jumped out to me and I will tell you this: despite my own Chicken Little tendencies, I am finding myself feeling far more optimistic about the future than I might have thought I would.

Cavaliers Stumble Against Seattle
Virginia had flirted with disaster twice in recent home games before escaping with wins against Radford and Norfolk State. Well you've heard the old saying about playing with fire. The Hoos got burnt on Wednesday night by another sluggish performance as Seattle swiped a 59-53 victory in the John Paul Jones Arena, simultaneously the first home loss and first road win of the season for the two teams.

Winning Isn't Easy
Image: KT HarrellBefore my team's game on Monday night, I reminded the players in the pregame talk that "it's never easy to win." It takes effort and execution every time out against any team you ever play to leave with a victory. As I watched the second half tick away of Virginia's eventual 50-49 win against Norfolk State, I kept reflecting on that phrase and how it applied to the Hoos on this forgettable December night.

Sene's Score Salvages Win For Hoos
Image: Assane SeneThe sluggish post-exam break outing Wahoo fans expected to see against Oregon made a late arrival Monday night in the John Paul Jones Arena. Fortunately for Virginia, Assane Sene's tap-in of KT Harrell's missed free-throw with 4.8 seconds left turned what could have been a devastating loss into a disappointing 50-49 victory over 1-8 Norfolk State on Monday night.
