This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Gilman (Baltimore, MD) star Darius Jennings, one of Virginia's top remaining targets, as well as Virginia commitments Daquan Romero and David Watford were in Charlottesville on official visits this past weekend.

I caught up with the 6-0, 175-pound Jennings on Sunday night to discuss the official visit and much more, including Gilman's 2010 season. Virginia scored the first of five official visits Jennings plans to take. He'll go to Ohio State this coming weekend and plans to visit UCLA, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest in January. Maryland rounds out the stellar athlete's final six.

EDGE subscribers can read Jennings' comments in an article posted Monday morning. The Baltimore native was hosted by Jeremiah Mathis and spent a lot of time with wide receiver Tim Smith as well as the coaches, including head coach Mike London and wide receivers coach Shawn Moore.

After the visit to Ohio State, Jennings is slated to play in two all-star games - The Chesapeake Bowl on Dec. 30 and the Under Armour All-American Bowl on Jan. 5.

I'll have more on Watford and Romero this week as well, including an article on the Hampton (VA) quarterback Tuesday. According to Watford, both he and Romero are set for January enrollment, something sure to help the staff's flexibility in terms of the 2011 class.

Also, stay tuned for an update on Phoebus (Hampton, VA) linebacker Caleb Taylor. Taylor, along with teammate and fellow linebacker prospect Romero, defeated Stone Bridge in the Group AAA, Division 5 State Championship Game this past Saturday. Phoebus has now won three straight state championships.

"Coming into high school, I just thought of playing and winning, but I never thought of state championships and rings. To get three out of four state titles is great," Taylor said. "It felt good to win the 3-peat."

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Top Target Update: Jennings Visits UVa
As a senior, Darius Jennings showed why he earned over 30 major FBS scholarship offers. The 6-0, 175-pound standout, Gilman's (Baltimore, MD) starting quarterback, totaled 2,017 yards of offense including 1,592 yards rushing on 165 carries this season. He had 24 touchdowns (14 rushing, three passing and two kick-off returns). For his career, he had 4,338 yards rushing and 53 total touchdowns

Recruiting Roundtable
JHoo, Kamikaze Hoo and Greg Waters join me in this latest Roundtable piece, to analyze the most pressing needs within the football program and discuss which players from the 2010 red-shirt class and the 2011 class could make an impact next season. We'll revisit some of these questions shortly after Signing Day, but in the meantime check out our analysis with less than months remaining until Signing Day 2011.

Golden Hired By Hurricanes

The Miami football program has turned to former Virginia assistant Al Golden as its new head coach. The Miami Herald reports that Golden accepted the job with a five-year contract; terms were not disclosed.

"Nobody has more energy, excitement, enthusiasm in this country than Coach Golden," UM athletic director Kirby Hocutt said Sunday in The Miami Herald. "What he has done at Temple University is [nothing] short of miraculous. He has taken a program that was at the bottom point of the football world and has built them to a respectable program and is going to do great things here at the University of Miami."

Of course, no one understands that energy and enthusiasm better than UVa fans. Before taking the helm at Temple, Golden was considered one of the top recruiters on the staff of former coach Al Groh. Golden was part of a young and energetic staff, along with current Cavalier coach Mike London, that helped the Hoos pick up some impressive early recruiting classes that jumpstarted Groh's tenure. With that recruiting track record and the lure of the storied Hurricanes' program, Golden's Miami team likely will be a force to deal with in Coastal Division battles in the years to come.

   SabreMail History

Issue No. 157 - September 24, 2004

Cautious optimism.

If there is a prevailing mood on the message boards these days, that's what it is. Not giddy excitement about Virginia's three straight routs. Not cynical negativity about how this can't last. There are a wide range of thoughts and attitudes about UVa's football season so far, but I'm struck by how many fans seem to be falling into the category of the cautiously optimistic.

Alvin Pearman and the Cavs are off to a running start.
Then again, that mood probably makes the most sense. After all, it's true that the Cavaliers haven't faced a quality opponent yet, so why get carried away? But it's also true that the team has looked awfully impressive, even better than most of us expected. The offensive line. The running game. Marques Hagans. The tight ends. The d-line. The linebackers. All are performing at what sure looks like a championship level. Some other areas need work (the secondary, the punting game, the receiving corps), but it's been a long time since we've seen a Virginia football team play this well for three straight weeks.

The Cavs are earning national respect - ESPN's Mark May predicted a UVa upset of Florida State in three weeks - and it's tempting to throw caution to the wind and expect this season to turn into something truly special. But for most fans I don't think that will happen until Virginia actually beats the Seminoles in Tallahassee (oh, and Syracuse and Clemson before that).

If the Hoos are 7-0 heading into November, I bet things get a whole lot giddier around here.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Cold-Shooting Cavs Repel Radford
Image: Joe HarrisClang, clang, clang. Cavalier coach Tony Bennett will be hearing the sound of missed shots hitting the rim in his sleep tonight. Fortunately for the second-year coach, his Virginia men's basketball team defeated in-state foe Radford 54-44 at home Tuesday night, despite only shooting 27.7% from the field. The Hoos head into the exam break having won four of their last five games.

Scott's Passing And More From The VT Win
Image: Mike ScottThanks to two double-doubles and an outstanding performance on the road in Blacksburg on Sunday, Virginia's Mike Scott received recognition as the ACC Player of the Week. Against Virginia Tech, Scott posted 21 points and 13 rebounds to help the Hoos start 1-0 in conference play. Just as important as his scoring and glass work, however, has been Scott's passing ability.
