Senior Farewell

Ras-I DowlingThe Virginia football team wraps up its season under coach Mike London this week. That means several seniors will be playing their last game for the Hoos. TheSabre.com guru and photographer Mike Ingalls has put together a nice 34-image gallery of the fourth- and fifth-year seniors that were introduced before the Senior Day game with Maryland. Check out that EDGE gallery: click here.

At 4-7 in 2010, the Cavaliers are not bowl eligible so the final game will be at Virginia Tech on Saturday. That game is set to kick off at noon on The ACC Network. London said Sunday night that the Hoos are looking at this contest like a bowl game.

"For us, it's kind of like a bowl game," London said. "We're not going to a bowl this year, they're a really, really good team, and this is our last game."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

On the EDGE ...

In lieu of the Division 1 men's basketball Early Signing Period, I spoke with Jim Young of ACCSports.com for further thoughts on the University of Virginia's 3-prospect haul as well as thoughts on ACC men's basketball recruiting. EDGE subscribers can read Jim's takes now on the EDGE.

On the football recruiting front, there are rumblings that Phoebus (Hampton, VA) linebacker/defensive end Daquan Romero may be having second thoughts. Might the reigning Peninsula district Player of the Year be reconsidering his commitment to UNC? I hope to have more on this as soon as possible - is UVa in the mix?

This Week

It certainly will be a happy Thanksgiving for the Good Counsel Falcons.

Good Counsel (Olney, MD) defeated DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) 42-3 for the WCAC Championship on Sunday. University of Virginia-bound Vincent Croce, who started at middle linebacker and tight end for the Falcons this season, leaves the high school level with two championships. I hope to catch up with the 6-4, 265-pound senior, a defensive lineman prospect for the Hoos, this week to reflect on his latest championship and look ahead to helping the Virginia program rebuild.

CB/WR Brandon Phelps, another top Virginia 2011 recruit from the state of Maryland, helped Damascus (MD) to a big playoff win over Quince Orchard last week. The 6-0, 175-pound senior, perhaps a player you'll see on the field next season for the Cavaliers, had two receiving scores in his team's win. I hope to have more with Phelps this week, so stay tuned.

I'll continue to hit the 2012 recruiting trail as well. In case you missed it last week, be sure to read up on a couple of in-state junior targets in Brookville (Lynchburg, VA) defensive lineman Korren Kirven and Patrick Henry (Roanoke, VA) offensive tackle Ryan Revia.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Hill: UVa Just Felt Like "The Right School"
D.J. Hill was intrigued enough by the University of Virginia to make the 7 1/2 hour trip to Charlottesville for an unofficial visit in August. Days following the visit, the Newton (Covington, GA) star said the following about the experience: "The location is real nice. I didn't think it would be like it is. I loved everything about it. The academics are real good. The academics are some of the best in the country. The stadium is nice. The locker room is nice.

Quick Take: ACCSports.com's Jim Young
In this latest "Quick Take," Jim Young, Editor of ACCSports.com, answers questions regarding the ACC schools and the Early Signing Period, which ended last Wednesday. Young discusses Virginia's 3-recruit haul, which school came out on top in the ACC according to ACCSports.com, and more.

D'Brickshaw Ferguson Commits to UVa

D'Brickashaw Ferguson, a 6-5, 250-pound athlete, is New York's top offensive linemen. He committed to the Cavaliers this past weekend.

"I think UVa's an excellent academic institution," Ferguson said. "Also, I was very impressed with the coaching staff. I was impressed that I was able to have a relationship with these guys. I was impressed with the plan that they had for me. I just think it was a great fit for me personally.

"I also thought of Virginia as a good University. At the point that I really knew that this was the place for me was probably a few days after my Michigan State visit. I say that because, after I saw what was out there, I was able to make a better decision. I knew that I liked the University, but I wasn't sure whether this was the best possible choice for me. Once I saw what other places had to offer, I realized that those places just didn't compare."

Ferguson's older brother is a fourth year at UVa, and that may have had a little influence on his decision to attend Thomas Jefferson's University.

"It was real nice situation, because I had somebody who was there for the four years to tell me how life at Virginia was."

Ferguson said that he had been to UVa on several occasions to visit his brother. Did that give him enough information to make his decision?

"I want to say yes and no. Yes, I learned more about the University, but no, because I never really had an opportunity to see the football facilities until I was being recruited. That sort of gave me a new outlook."

UVa has several openings to fill on their offensive line do to graduation from four seniors who have all played since they were freshmen. Ferguson will likely get a chance to play early.

"I'd love the opportunity to play as a freshman, but we just have to see how the system goes. I'm going to come in there and try my best and see what happens."

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

The Sunday Sampler - BC
Image: Will HillTaking a look at the statistics from Virginia's game at Boston College on Saturday, the line for sophomore Will Hill doesn't jump off the page. Hill's first career sack is the only tackle to his credit. Yet, the 6'4" Williamsburg native showed signs that he could be a solid, and important, option at defensive tackle in the years to come.

Help Wanted: Explosive Scorers Needed
Explosive scorers wanted: Division 1, FBS school in search of explosive offensive players to provide scoring punch. Candidates should have speed, wiggle, creativity, or nose for the end zone from longer distances. Proven track record preferred. Inquiries and DVD resumes should be directed to McCue Center, Charlottesville. Immediate positions available.

Eagles Edge Hoos
A Hall of Fame coach once said, "If you go for a field goal when you need six points, you just know that dadgum ball is going to go wide right." Bobby Bowden never spoke a truer word, and the Cavaliers learned that lesson the hard way on Saturday in Chestnut Hill, falling 17-13 to Boston College.

Game Preview 2010: BC
Image: Robert RandolphFor the Virginia football team, November has become a challenging time of year in recent seasons. The Cavaliers, after all, have not won a game in the regular season's final month in more than three years. The last victory? The improbable 48-0 eruption over Miami to close out the historic Orange Bowl in 2007, a win that was part of the Hoos' Gator Bowl run and last winning season. So is there any wonder that UVa is focused on trying to get any win it can as Mike London's first season winds down?

Cavs Falter In Road Game At Stanford
Image: Jontel EvansVirginia's first road trip of the 2010-2011 men's basketball season ended with a disappointing thud at Stanford on Thursday night. After leading in the early stages of the game, the Cavaliers hung tough through the first half before a shooting onslaught propelled the Cardinal to an 81-60 win. Stanford slammed UVa with 54.4 percent shooting to eventually pull away.

Photo Gallery: 2010 Season Opener
Image: Billy BaronThe Virginia men's basketball team opened its season with a win over William & Mary at the John Paul Jones Arena. It was the first real game for the Cavalier freshmen, including Billy Baron, who stole the show with a 3-point barrage and 19 points against the Tribe. Check out 56 photos from the victory!

JHoo's 10 Things I Learned 2010 ... Maryland
I hate losing to Maryland. I really, really hate losing to Maryland. So, as you might imagine, I was grumpy on Saturday night, was grumpy on Sunday, and still am grumpy now. But being grumpy about a loss really does not help in terms of trying to break down what happened in the game. So I will try - hard - to put aside my grumpiness.

Hoos Upend Upstate Squad
Image: Billy BaronTony Bennett's Cavaliers firmly established themselves as a second-half team Monday night after rallying to a 20-point win over USC Upstate at the John Paul Jones Arena. Virginia's Pack-Line defense did little to frustrate the Spartans early in the contest, as the Cavaliers gave up several 3-pointers and a few key drives to the basket. In the second half, Virginia came out as a much more cohesive unit, aided by clutch play from the Wahoo bench.

Press Conference Notes 2010: BC
The theme of the day at Monday's press conference was penalties. Virginia has been racking up the yellow flags in recent weeks, leaving fans hungry for answers. Cavalier head coach Mike London was busy breaking it down for the press at the John Paul Jones Arena.

Greg's Game Report: Maryland
Image: Keith PayneThe Maryland game highlighted what must be the biggest frustration of the 2010 season among fans that follow the Cavaliers - habitual mistakes. The items that cost the Hoos a win against Maryland are the same issues, with a few minor exceptions, that have haunted coach Mike London, his staff and this football club all season. Lack of discipline, manifested in incredibly stupid and untimely penalties, weak tackling and poor execution.
