This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Nolte

This coming weekend is a big one on the football recruiting front, but the men's basketball team hosted one of its early top targets in the 2012 class this past weekend. 6-8, 190-pound forward Evan Nolte, a prospect out of Milton High School (Alpharetta, GA), was in Charlottesville on an unofficial visit.

Nolte, who has been offered by UVa, Georgia, Iowa, Ohio State and South Carolina, averaged 14 points and seven rebounds per game last season as a sophomore on Milton's Class 5A State Championship squad. He is also receiving interest from Duke and UNC.

TheSabre.com will have more from Nolte later this evening.

This Week

This weekend will be a big one for Mike London and company, who are scheduled to host a handful of official visitors including Irving (TX) defensive end Horace Arkadie, North Cobb (Kennesaw, GA) linebacker Troy Gray, Newton (Covington, GA) linebacker D.J. Hill, Kempsville (Virginia Beach, VA) linebacker Travis Hughes, Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, VA) wide receiver Demitri Knowles and Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) cornerback Demetrious Nicholson.

This is a huge weekend in terms of finishing out strong in the 2011 class, in which the staff has received 21 verbal commitments. Stay tuned for more coverage of this weekend throughout the week, as well as reaction from recruits following the weekend.

Also this week, stay tuned for a piece on Virginia High School (Bristol, VA) placekicker Ian Frye, who has accepted a recruited walk-on spot with UVa. The 6-6, 190-pound senior, known for his strong kicking leg, discusses his future with the Cavaliers among other things.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

2012 PG Okereafor Checks Out UVa
Point guard Teddy Okereafor's character and game impressed Christchurch head coach Ben Thompson prior to this summer, when the England native transferred into the Virginia prep school. Now, the 6-3 junior is primed to show what he can do on the hardcourt as the Seahorses' starting point guard.

Clover Hill Star A Top Junior
Clover Hill (Midlothian, VA) has its biggest matchup of the 2010 season on Friday, when the Cavaliers take on L.C. Bird for first place in the Dominion district. Quarterback/defensive back Joel Caleb, already one of the most highly recruited prospects in the state's 2012 class, has had his fingerprints all over Clover Hill's 6-0 start.

Former Cavalier Swimmer Fran Crippen Passes Away

University of Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Former Virginia swimmer Fran Crippen passed away Saturday while competing in the 10K World Cup open water race in Sharjah, United Arab Emirates. He was 26 years old.

Crippen, a native of Conshohocken, Pa., was an 11-time All-American at Virginia and was named the Atlantic Coast Conference swimmer of the year in 2003 and 2004. He also earned the league's freshman of the year award in 2003 and was the most valuable swimmer of the 2004 ACC Championships.

After finishing his Cavalier career, Crippen went on to compete in open water swimming. He earned a bronze medal in the 10K swim at the 2009 World Championships in Rome and collected silver medals in the 10K at both the 2006 and 2010 Pan Pacific Games.

In September, Crippen was named the Male Open Water Swimmer of the Year by USA Swimming.

In his career, Crippen won six United States national titles - two in the 800 freestyle, two in the 5K and two in the 10K.

Crippen's sister, Claire, is currently a fourth-year swimmer at Virginia. Another sister, Teresa, currently swims at Florida. His oldest sister, Maddy, swam at Villanova and was a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic team and an NCAA Champion.

"The University of Virginia swimming and diving family wishes to express our deep love and concern to the Crippen family during this time of tragic loss," said UVa swimming and diving coach Mark Bernardino. "Fran was our son and our brother in life and in sport. His presence, vitality, courage, toughness and endearing persona have left an indelible mark on the lives of all of us who knew and loved him. There was and can only ever be one Fran Crippen. He brightened the world with a heart that was as big as the world.

"We will do all we can as a team to share our strength and love with Pat, Pete, Maddy, Claire and Teresa. We thank them for sharing Fran with us and for allowing him to be a beacon of human and athletic greatness in our midst. My family and I love Fran as one of our own and we will cherish him forever."

This Week in Recruiting By Chris Horne

Game ball

This week's Sabremail game ball goes to defensive tackle/offensive lineman Nick Jenkins. The 6-3, 285-pound four-star standout racked up 10 tackles including one tackle-for-loss in Good Counsel's 38-13 win over Paul VI. The win puts Good Counsel at 9-0 heading into its match-up versus DeMatha this week.

For the season, Jenkins has tallied 81 tackles, including 10 tackles-for-loss and 8.5 sacks. He has added 10 quarterback hurries and has forced one fumble. Jenkins is being recruited by Virginia as a nose tackle/defensive tackle and, coupled with current true freshman Nate Collins, gives the Hoos a bright future at the position.

Jenkins, who chose Virginia over 30 Division 1A offers, is known for his toughness and athleticism.

"He's the best tackle I've ever had in all my years of coaching," Good Counsel Head Coach Bob Milloy said. "He's an avid weight-lifter and he works out five days a week. He really wants it. He's a good leader, role model and the whole bit. We're fortunate to have him."

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

The Sunday Sampler - EMU
Image: Trey WomackThe Virginia punt coverage team put together another strong performance on Saturday night in the 48-21 win against Eastern Michigan. There was, of course, the perfectly executed fake that led to a Trey Womack touchdown. The unit also locked up the Eagles on three other kicks as the special teams had an all-around great night in Scott Stadium.

Hoos Take Down Eagles
Image: Terence Fells-DanzerHalloween is still more than a week away, but Scott Stadium looked a lot like ghost town on Saturday night. The 37,386 fans in attendance saw the Cavaliers struggle through a scary-looking first half before they easily dispatched Eastern Michigan 48-21. Four different Hoos scored touchdowns, including the career firsts for Terence Fells-Danzer, Paul Freedman and Trey Womack, as they rolled to the home win.

Game Preview 2010: EMU
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsThe first ever meeting between Eastern Michigan and Virginia in football isn't exactly the kind of thing for the grand marquee. EMU snapped an 18-game losing streak last week ... and it took the biggest comeback in school history to do it. None of that matters right now to Virginia coach Mike London. He wants to win a game - any game - and the next chance to do that is against Eastern Michigan, making its first ever trip to the state.

Sherrill Steps Into Senior Role
Image: Will SherrillAs the Nov. 12 season opener against William and Mary rapidly approaches, the Cavalier men's basketball team is hard at work on the practice court at the John Paul Jones Arena. One of the hallmarks of this season's squad is the sheer youth present on the roster; there are seven incoming freshman players, including one walk-on. It will be up to veteran players to both set the tone for the season and to bring the younger guys along, a role that Will Sherrill is ready to embrace.

10 Things I Learned 2010 ... UNC
Image: Keith PayneTo me, this run of home wins against UNC was not a "streak." Beating Clemson for the first time after ... oh ... 400 years of losing to them was breaking a streak. This was a bit of an oddity, an interesting tidbit to throw out there for discussion purposes. So I am not terribly worked up about the end of the "streak" ... but there was an awful lot that went wrong in the game itself and there is plenty to be learned from it. On top of that, we are halfway through the season, and some perspective hopefully has been gained.

Press Conference Notes 2010: EMU
Image: Trevor GrywatchAfter a home defeat that left the Cavaliers precious little to celebrate, one player was highlighted at Monday's press conference for his achievements off the field. Junior linebacker Trevor Grywatch made a special appearance at the John Paul Jones Arena to speak about his recent experience of becoming a bone marrow donor.

Greg's Game Report: UNC
If you like clinics on how not to manage a game as quarterback and how not to defend the passing game, then you got your money's worth Saturday at Scott Stadium. A quick glance at the statistics over the last three weeks reveals just how far Mike London's rebuilding process still has to go. You have to go back to 1975 to find the last time the Cavaliers surrendered 33 points or more in three consecutive games. As you can imagine, the grades aren't very good in this weekly game report.

Photo Gallery: UNC
Image: Coach Mike LondonThe Cavaliers gearing up for another nighttime contest this weekend with Eastern Michigan. As always, football under the lights is a blast - check out some photos from the UNC game to get a feel for the atmosphere at Scott Stadium. There are 76 pictures of Mike London, Bob Davis, the cheerleaders, Raynard Horne, Cam Johnson, and more!
