Zeglinski To Undergo Knee Operation

University of Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Virginia red-shirt junior guard Sammy Zeglinski (Philadelphia, Pa./The William Penn Charter School) will undergo an operation on his left knee on Tuesday (Oct. 19). The operation will involve cartilage work and the duration of Zeglinski's rehabilitation will be determined after the surgery.

Zeglinski injured the knee during a workout in early October.

"I feel for Sammy," said Virginia head coach Tony Bennett. "He has worked hard to get ready for this season and he's an integral part of our team. I know he'll work hard and be diligent about his rehabilitation.

"Sammy is one of our more experienced players and our other guards will need to step up in his absence."

The 6-1 Zeglinski has led the Cavaliers in three-point field goals made, assists and steals each of the last two seasons. Last season he played in all 31 of the Cavaliers' games, starting 29, and averaged 8.9 points and 3.8 rebounds a game. Zeglinski led the team with 61 three-point field goals made, 80 assists and 38 steals. He has started 44 games the last two seasons.

Zeglinski missed 25 games during the 2007-08 season, including the last 24 games, with an ankle injury. A medical hardship waiver request was approved for Zeglinski in the summer of 2008.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Three commitments, including Good Counsel (Wheaton, MD) defensive end Vincent Croce, L.C. Bird (Chesterfield, VA) defensive back/wide receiver Anthony Harris and DeMatha Catholic (Hyattsville, MD) defensive back Jordan Lomax, as well as senior wide receiver target Timmy Keith will be featured in an EDGE report this week.

All four prospects were in Charlottesville on Saturday, attending UVa's game against UNC. Croce, Harris and Lomax discuss the game atmosphere, their commitments and more, while Osbourn (Manassas, VA) head coach Steve Schultze provides the latest on his star senior receiver, who earned an offer from the Cavaliers in the spring.

Despite UVa's struggles, there doesn't seem to be a big impact as far as the commits I've spoken with. Especially Croce.

"I'm just waiting for the [letter of intent] to come so I can sign," said Croce, who will be able to sign on February 2, 2011. "I have not talked to anyone at another school. Some have stopped by our school, but [Good Counsel Assistant] Coach [Kevin] McFadden knows I'm solid. He knows where I want to go."

A large number of talented prospects, from the 2011 and 2012 classes, were in attendance on Saturday. Check out The Good Ol Blog report for more names. I plan to have many updates throughout the week on these prospects, so stay tuned to the EDGE for much more.

I'll also start to look ahead to the weekend of the Miami game, which will be a big one on the recruiting front. Liberty Christian Academy (Lynchburg, VA) senior wide receiver Demitri Knowles is just one of a handful of prospects expected to make official visits that day. I plan to have more on the speedy prospect later this week.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Atkins, Jesperson Reflect On Official Visits
Image: Paul JespersonMerrill (WI) wing forward Paul Jesperson was the first player to commit to the University of Virginia's 2011 class. Landon School (Bethesda, MD) power forward Darion Atkins was the last. While making their official visits the first weekend in October, the two met for the first time and hit if off immediately.

Commit Spotlight: DE Marco Jones
Boys' Latin School (Baltimore, MD) defensive end Marco Jones hopes a second trip to Charlottesville in as many weeks will be better than the first. The 6-4, 240-pound senior plans to attend a Virginia Cavaliers football game for the first time on Saturday, a week after his team lost at St. Anne's-Belfield (Charlottesville, VA).

Reynolds makes ACC All-Freshmen Team Official UVa Athletics Media Relations Release

University of Virginia guard J.R. Reynolds is a member of the 2004 Atlantic Coast Conference All-Freshmen Team. He is the first Virginia player to earn the honor since Travis Watson in 2000.

Reynolds is averaging 8.4 points, 2.0 assists and 1.6 rebounds a game in the 25 games he's played in this season. He is shooting 43.3 percent (71-164) from the field, including 36.9 percent (38-103) from three-point range, and 75.6 percent (31-41) from the free throw line. He has scored in double figures nine times, including eight times in the last 12 games.

Juniors Elton Brown and Devin Smith made the All-ACC Team as Honorable Mention members. Brown is UVa's leading scorer this season, averaging 15 points per game. Smith is averaging almost 13 points per game despite having a back injury. Both Brown and Smith have come on strong late in the season to help Virginia win five of their last seven games and an outside shot at making the NCAA Tournament.

The Sunday Sampler - UNC
Image: Devin WallaceNot a whole lot went right for the Virginia football team on Saturday as North Carolina rolled to a 44-10 victory and halted its long Charlottesville losing streak in the process. The Cavaliers' night started on the wrong foot when the Tar Heels scored in just 17 seconds and things scarcely improved the rest of the way. When asked after the game how giving up a big touchdown play so early affects a team battling a losing streak, UVa coach Mike London said it does have an impact but that you have to learn to bounce back against adversity.

A Tittle Tale For Verica
Image: Marc VericaMarc Verica shuffled off the field Saturday, his shoulders slightly slumped. His head tilted toward the ground. Boos trickled down from the stands clad in his own colors. No one dreams of being Y.A. Tittle, kneeling in an end zone, helmetless and spent. Yet, that's all I could think about Saturday when Verica solemnly trotted to the sidelines.

Heels Hammer Hoos To Snap C'Ville Streak
Image: Keith PayneMike London and his Cavaliers met at midfield following Saturday's game against North Carolina. The entire team grouped in a circle around the head coach and stood for a moment, taking in the atmosphere around them. The hometown fans were all but gone, the other team was celebrating, and the opposing fans were raucous after a 44-10 win.

Game Preview 2010: UNC
Image: Marc VericaAs Virginia football fans are well aware, the past two-plus seasons have been a rough ride. The Cavaliers slugged through two straight losing seasons and now have lost eight consecutive ACC games after all. But even as Al Groh's tenure limped to the finish line, there's one thing Hoo fans have been able to count on: beating UNC. Virginia has won four straight, seven of the last eight, and 10 of the last 12 games with the Tar Heels. Can the Cavs keep that hot streak going? Let's take a closer look at the match-up in the weekly game preview.

10 Things I Learned 2010 ... GT
Image: Coach Mike LondonIn recent years, going against Georgia Tech's rushing attack is no fun for many a good team. For a team in transition like this year's Hoo squad, it proved to be far too much to handle. The Cavaliers eventually yielded 477 rushing yards and fell 33-21 to the Yellow Jackets. So what did we learn from the loss in Atlanta? Let's take a look.

Greg's Game Report: GT
Image: Chase MinnifieldYou probably felt the same way I did at times Saturday. Georgia Tech, which has looked vulnerable at times this season, turns the ball over to negate some early drives - maybe this is our day. The Cavaliers play tough; they hang with a stronger, more talented opponent but always seem unable to execute at the most crucial times. Yes, we've seen this before. Close - and yet so far.

Press Conference Notes 2010: UNC
Image: Marc VericaIt has been a rough two weeks for the Virginia football team with two losses to open ACC play. The Cavaliers, who have now lost eight straight league games, fell 34-14 to Florida State and 33-21 to Georgia Tech. In those games, they have fallen behind by large margins on the scoreboard and struggled to stop the run. So how do the Hoos stay positive and turn things around with North Carolina headed to Charlottesville this weekend? Read about that and more in the notes recap from UVa's weekly meeting with the media.
