Cavaliers Sweep ITA All-American Titles

University of Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

The Virginia men's tennis team swept both titles at the ITA All-American Championships as play concluded Sunday at the Case Tennis Center at the University of Tulsa. First-year Alex Domijan won the singles title, while Drew Courtney and Michael Shabaz won the doubles title at the year's first major tournament.

Domijan rallied from dropping the first set of his collegiate career to defeat eighth-seeded Eric Quigley of Kentucky 4-6, 6-4, 6-3. He becomes the third freshman in the 32-year history of the tournament to win the singles title, joining Scott Davis of Stanford in 1980 and Ryan Wolters of Stanford in 1995. Domijan also became the first Cavalier to win the ITA All-American singles championship, as it had been the only major individual title that Virginia had not previously won.

Courtney and Shabaz, the tournament's No. 3 seed, defeated Chase Buchanan and Blaz Rola of Ohio State 6-3, 6-7, 6-3 in the final. Courtney and Shabaz, the reigning NCAA Champions, have now won 10 consecutive matches against collegiate competition dating back to last season. They become the second Cavalier team to win the title, joining Somdev Devvarman and Treat Huey, who won the championship in 2007.

Virginia became the fifth school to sweep both titles at the tournament.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Gray, Atkins, and more ...

North Cobb (Kennesaw, GA) senior linebacker Troy Gray took some time to update his recruitment. For now, things look pretty good for the University of Virginia. The 6-1, 215-pound prospect plans to make an official visit to UVa on the weekend of Oct. 30 and, though it will be his first ever trip to Charlottesville, he is already very high on the Cavaliers.

Arkansas, Central Florida, Kentucky and Middle Tennessee State are Virginia's prime competition for the speedy linebacker, who has run the 40-yard dash in 4.53 seconds. Gray is enjoying a successful senior season, as his team is 5-1.

EDGE subscribers can read a full article on Gray this week.

Also on the football recruiting front, EDGE subscribers will be able to read an overall look at the 2011 class, including which prospects are still available and what needs remain the most pressing. Twenty high school seniors have committed to Virginia's 2011 class, but in reality there are 21 commits in total, counting Fork Union Military Academy (VA) safety Kyrrel Latimer. A 2010 DeMatha Catholic grad, Latimer committed in the summer of 2009 but did not sign a letter of intent in February of 2010. If he does what he needs to do academically, though, it appears Coach London would take him as a recruit in the 2011 class.

Shifting to the hardwood, UVa's latest men's basketball commitment, Landon School (Bethesda, MD) power forward Darion Atkins, enjoyed the official visit he made on the weekend of Oct. 2. The 6-8, 210-pound senior called the camaraderie with the players - including fellow 2011 commitment Paul Jesperson - the highlight of his experience.

On Sept. 17, Atkins verbally committed to Virginia over Notre Dame. He was solid in his commitment, but last weekend's visit served to reaffirm his decision.

Atkins is the third and possibly final recruit of the class, though Tony Bennett has another scholarship at his disposal should he choose to use it. If not, Atkins, Jesperson and Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA) guard Malcolm Brogdon will make up Bennett's second full recruiting class as Cavaliers head coach.

Commits React To FSU Game
Image: Anthony HarrisGreen Run's (Virginia Beach, VA) David Dean, L.C. Bird's (Chesterfield, VA) Anthony Harris and Damascus' (MD) Brandon Phelps, three of the top commitments in UVa's 2011 class, were in Charlottesville last Saturday to see Virginia take on ACC-rival Florida State. All three prospects took some time to discuss the game, the program and more.

Cain Set to Visit
Report by Chris Horne

Virginia will entertain 6-9, 205 pound forward Jason Cain of John Bartram High School (Philadelphia, PA) this weekend on an official visit.

"He's leaving tomorrow," said John Bartram head coach Lou Biester. "He's excited - at least as excited as Jason can get. He's also considering UNC Greensboro, Indiana, and Villanova right now."

Cain, who began his high school career as a 6-1 guard, has grown eight inches over the last three years. Possessing the size of a center, his skills are suited more for a small or very athletic power forward.

"Jason is very athletic," said Biester. "He can handle the ball and he was the team's best passer. He averaged 15 points, 12 rebounds, six blocks, and eight assists in leading us to a Public League Championship title. He's not a center, though. He faces the basket. The player he reminds me of in terms of style is Arizona's Luke Walton. He can do it all - even shoot the three. Jason needs to work on his three-point shot, but he can do it."

According to Biester, neither Villanova, Indiana, nor Virginia have officially offered Cain a scholarship, however he feels they all will soon. Cain is one of Virginia's primary remaining targets for the Spring 2002 signing period.

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

The Sunday Sampler - GT
Image: Joe TorchiaAs reported on The Washington Post's Cavaliers Journal blog Saturday before the game, senior tight end Joe Torchia is out for the season and expected to have surgery in the near future on an ailing shoulder injury. Virginia coach Mike London said Sunday night that Torchia's shoulder problem has been a recurring issue and that he reaggravated the injury against Florida State last week. That means his on-field career at UVa likely has come to an end.

Cavaliers Come Up Short Against Georgia Tech
The Cavaliers were outmatched in Atlanta on Saturday, falling 33-21 to Georgia Tech in the team's second ACC contest of the 2010 season. The Yellow Jackets put up staggering numbers on offense, while UVa's offense showed signs of life in the fourth quarter, but like against Florida State, the efforts came far too late. Mike London's team has yet to get its first ACC victory, and falls to 0-2 in conference play.

The Painful, Yet Healing, Phase Of Acceptance
Image: Coach Mike LondonThe prognosticators predicted before the season Virginia would be bad in 2010, the worst team in the ACC's Coastal Division and perhaps worse than a year ago. The last two humbling weeks are certainly pointed in that direction. At some point, however, there isn't much to say. I guess it's the "shut up and take your medicine" phase of rebuilding that's sinking in.

Catching Up With The Freshmen, Part 2
Image: Billy Baron"Catching Up, Part 1" featured K.T. Harrell, Akil Mitchell and Will Regan. In Part 2, it is guard Billy Baron, guard Joe Harris and power forward/center James Johnson who discuss a variety of topics including the transition from high school to college, their fellow first years, academics and more.

Catching Up With The UVa Freshmen
Image: K.T. HarrellThe University of Virginia's freshman class, ranked No. 19 in the nation by Scout.com and No. 20 in the nation by Rivals.com, is head coach Tony Bennett's first full class as the Cavaliers head coach. Certainly, it goes without saying that this group is expected to be a big part of the program going forward. TheSabre.com caught up with all six freshmen to discuss various topics including expectations, adjusting to college life and much more. Today, we feature guard KT Harrell, forward Akil Mitchell and forward Will Regan.

Game Preview 2010: Georgia Tech
Image: Keith PayneIt's hard to avoid. The Al Groh vs. Virginia, one-time mentor vs. student storyline that is. After all, Georgia Tech defensive coordinator Al Groh spent 9 years on UVa's sidelines as the program's head coach. He hired current Cavalier coach Mike London. Twice. The Commonwealth's newspapers have been stacked with Al Groh articles so far this week. And while Groh, London, and the players are all downplaying the match-up, TheSabre.com's message boards are not where Groh, not surprisingly, has been a hot topic. But what about the game? Let's take a look at the Yellow Jackets.

Cavaliers Ready To Get Started
Image: Tony BennettThe leaves are turning brown and the air is getting crisp in Charlottesville. Nevertheless, it's toasty warm inside the John Paul Jones Arena where Tony Bennett and the Cavalier men's basketball team are hard at work preparing to open official practices for the 2010-2011 season. Coach Bennett and the team had a rough first season last year, finishing with a 15-16 record and missing out on postseason play, but optimism is growing with a full freshman class in town to join veterans with a full year of experience in Bennett's system.

Photo Gallery: Virginia vs. Florida State
Image: Colter PhillipsCheck out 73 new photos from the Florida State game. Great shots of the game along with some fan favorites of recent years, like Elton Brown, Kevin Ogletree and Brandon Albert. Both of Virginia's touchdown scores are documented as well, including Colter Phillips' second touchdown catch in as many games.

10 Things I Learned 2010 ... FSU
So far this season, UVa has won the games it was supposed to win and lost the games it was expected to lose. Frankly, there have been no surprises whatsoever, unless you consider the fact that Virginia kept it close against USC to be a surprise. But after this loss, I think there is a sense of surprise at how things went. But perhaps there should not have been.

Press Conference Notes 2010: GT
Image: Coach Mike LondonThis week, the Cavaliers look to rebound from a tough home loss against traditional power Florida State. Coach Mike London will take his team on the road to Atlanta where the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets await. Virginia has plenty to improve on this week, and will have to make those adjustments against a team that runs both a 3-4 defense and a triple-option offense; it's a whole new ballgame, everyone.

Greg's Game Report: FSU
Image: Marc VericaVirginia's offense failed its first real test against an imposing defense. FSU's defense slammed the door on any upset ideas early forcing the Cavaliers into seven straight punts and limiting the Hoos to a yard or less on four of their opening six drives. The Seminole secondary smothered Virginia's receivers and the nation's leading sack team harassed the quarterbacks all afternoon. Read about that and more in Greg's Game Report.
