This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

First Up

Earlier last week, Kempsville (Virginia Beach, VA) star linebacker Travis Hughes scheduled an official visit to the University of Virginia for the weekend of Oct. 30. On Saturday, he decided to make an unofficial stop by UVa for the Florida State game. The 6-1, 215-pound senior took time to discuss the visit and the possible repercussions with respect to Virginia, and I'll have the full report out on the EDGE.

Other visitors included commitments Rob Burns, David Dean, Kevin Green, Anthony Harris, and Brandon Phelps, as well as standout wide receiver target Daniel Adams. In addition to the report on Hughes, I'll have updates on Dean, Harris and Phelps posted soon. I hope to have more with all of the confirmed visitors throughout this week.

This Week

2011 class basketball recruits Darion Atkins and Paul Jesperson took their official visits to Virginia this past weekend. For Jesperson, a 6-7, 185-pound wing forward out of Merrill (WI), getting to know his classmate and future teammates was the highlight of the weekend.

"Me and Darion were pretty much together in everything we did," Jesperson said. "The big thing to me is how easy it was to get along with the guys. Both Darion and I liked all the guys. No one had a huge ego. They are all hard workers wanting to be part of something bigger than themselves. How they treat me and Darion is the biggest thing that stood out to me."

Stay tuned for a full report with reaction from Atkins and Jesperson later this week. ...

On the football front, 6-7, 290-pound offensive tackle Jay Whitmire will provide the latest on his recruitment as well as his senior season. Whitmire, a star for T.C. Williams (Alexandria, VA), hopes to be cleared to play this Saturday against Annandale. He has missed all of his team's regular season games thus far, so he is hoping to see his first action of the season.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. To sign up for an Edge subscription, please check out the Sabre Edge Sign Up and Information Page. If you're already on board as an Edge subscriber, click the links below to catch up on recruiting.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Commit Spotlight: FS Kameron Mack
Image: Kameron MackUVa-bound senior Kameron Mack has seen action at free safety, wide receiver, cornerback, tight end and kicker for an undefeated I.C. Norcom (Portsmouth, VA) squad this season. "We move him around the field and I think that is something that will help him as far as moving to the next level," Greyhounds head coach Larry Archie said. Free safety, though, is the position the Virginia coaches project the 6-5, 205-pound standout to play initially.

UVa Continues Push For Star 2012 PG
Image: Marcus PaigeThe Contact Period for Division 1 men's basketball recruiting began on September 9 and University of Virginia head coach Tony Bennett didn't waste any time heading to Marion, Iowa, to see Linn-Mar High School point guard Marcus Paige. The 6-1, 160-pound junior received an offer from UVa in June and appears to be one of the Cavaliers top targets in the 2012 class.

  • Cavaliers Down No. 1 Boston College: The No. 6 Virginia women's soccer team recorded its first-ever win over a top-ranked opponent, downing No. 1 Boston College 3-2 in overtime Sunday at Klockner Stadium. Meghan Lenczyk's goal in the 97th minute lifted the Cavaliers to the historic victory. For the team, the win was a great way to bounce back from its first conference loss of the season, 3-2, at No. 5 Maryland in the midst of tropical storm Nicole on Thursday.
  • Second-Ranked Tar Heels Edge No. 3 Virginia: No. 2 North Carolina edged No. 3 Virginia, 1-0, in Atlantic Coast Conference men's soccer action Friday night. With the loss, Virginia's record went to 6-2-1 overall and 1-2-1 in the ACC.
  • Kohles Claims Medalist Honors as UVa Cruises to Koch Title: Virginia men's golfer Ben Kohles won the fourth tournament of his career as the 25th-ranked Cavaliers cruised to a nine-shot victory at the Gary Koch Intercollegiate in Tampa, Fla. Virginia shot 5-over 293 during the final round to post a 54-hole total of 15-under 849. Auburn finished second at 858.
  • Virginia Men Claim 37th-Annual Brooks-Paul Short Team Title: The No. 22 Virginia men's cross country team edged No. 24 Georgetown, 132-149, in the 42-team field to win its first title at the 37th-annual Brooks-Paul Short Invitational on a rain-soaked Friday morning. The women's team, ranked 12th nationally, finished runner-up to No. 6 Georgetown by a score of 34-98. Senior Emil Heineking led the Cavaliers in his season debut, finishing second overall in the men's 8k race with a time of 23:49.
  • No. 1 Maryland Tops No. 3 Virginia in Overtime: The third-ranked Virginia field hockey team (9-1, 1-1 ACC) suffered its first loss of the season in a 2-1 overtime loss to top-ranked Maryland (9-1, 3-0 ACC) Friday at the University Hall Turf Field. Junior Paige Selenski scored the lone goal for the Cavaliers.
  • Cavaliers Earn First ACC Victory: Behind three players in double-digit kills, the Virginia volleyball team earned its first Atlantic Coast Conference win Sunday afternoon, defeating Clemson, 3-2 (19-25, 25-26, 24-26, 25-19, 15-10), in Memorial Gymnasium. The win came on the heels of a 3-1 loss to Georgia Tech on Friday.

FUMA's Pasztor Commits

Fork Union Military Academy offensive lineman Austin Pasztor made an official visit to UVa this past weekend. The 6-6, 310-pound prospect had an excellent official visit experience and, earlier today, gave a verbal commitment to head coach Al Groh, according to The Daily Progress and other reports. Pasztor becomes Virginia's 15th verbal commitment for the 2008 recruiting class. He is the fourth prospect projected to play on the offensive line.

A native of Langton, Ontario, Canada, Pasztor was discovered by Fork Union postgraduate head coach John Shuman in August, when Fork Union scrimmaged against the Canadian National team. Pasztor decided to come to Fork Union and, even though he is classified as a true senior, played for Coach Shuman's postgraduate squad this season. He played well, starting every game at left tackle.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

The Sunday Sampler - FSU
Image: defensive lineBoth before and after Virginia's ACC opener, a lot of the conversation has talked about the Seminoles' speed and talented playmakers. And rightfully so. But one of the biggest storylines in FSU's 34-14 win on Saturday came in the trenches where Florida State dominated the action for most of the afternoon. The Cavaliers couldn't get any push or protection on offense and they couldn't get much penetration or pressure on defense. The results? Well, they weren't pretty.

Virginia Stumbles Against Florida State
Image: White OutThe Cavaliers got a bitter taste of football reality on Saturday, as the Florida State Seminoles rolled into town and dealt the team a crushing 34-14 defeat. Virginia underperformed on both sides of the ball, allowing FSU 428 yards of total offense while only accumulating 25 rushing yards on 26 carries.

For Better Or For Worse, There's Hope
I admit it. I didn't see this coming. The thing is that I should have. There's a long way to go in this rebuilding project after all. The problem is that hope got in the way.

Students? We're Back And Excited!
Image: Virginia CelebrationThere's something different about Charlottesville this fall. For the first time in a long time, the student body is excited about football. The last time we had an organized game day event was back in 2008, when the administration banned signs at sporting events and we all held up blank pieces of paper in protest. The sign ban was overturned, and then everyone pretty much gave up on organized football activities. UVa students got all up in arms about having their First Amendment rights infringed upon, but we couldn't care less about football for a while. Until now, that is.

Game Preview 2010: FSU
Image: Perry Jones Anticipation is running high for this one. First, after two wins against FCS teams and a strong showing at USC, UVa fans are anxious to see how their team stacks up in ACC play. Second, the athletic department has declared this game as a "white out" and it will distribute free t-shirts to most of the fans in attendance (first come, first serve at the gate). Plus, of course, the Cavaliers haven't played the Seminoles since 2006 and everyone is excited to face FSU again. With that in mind, let's take a closer look at the Seminoles.

Photo Gallery: Virginia 48, VMI 7
Image: Marc VericaThe Virginia football team rolled to a convincing 48-7 victory against VMI last weekend and a lot of Cavaliers saw time on the field. Quarterback Marc Verica helped things go well for the Hoos with a career-high three touchdown passes, while many other players like Dontrelle Inman, Cam Johnson, and Robert Randolph had good outings as well. Check out 123 photos from the big win.

10 Things I Learned 2010 ... VMI
Image: Dontrelle InmanWith a game like UVa's match-up this past weekend with VMI, you can argue that there is only so much to learn. I beg to differ, especially when you are dealing with a team in transition like Virginia's 2010 squad. In this game, like each on this year, there will be plenty to learn. Let's look at 10 things from the game with the Keydets.

Press Conference Notes 2010: Florida State
Image: Chase MinnifieldThings are really kicking into high gear for the Virginia football program this week. The Cavaliers will open ACC play this Saturday at home against a traditional conference and national power, as well as a rival with some bad blood. Jimbo Fisher and the Florida State Seminoles are on the warpath this season, hoping to return the program to its former pedestal.

Greg's Game Report: VMI
Image: Perry Jones"Almost complete" is the impression left after the Cavaliers 48-7 victory of visiting VMI on Saturday. With the Keydets determined to stop the run, Virginia took to the air to deliver its most complete passing performance since the 2005 Music City Bowl as the aerial attack produced 341 passing yards and 5 touchdowns. Not to be outdone, after a sluggish start in the first half, the UVa defense limited the Keydets to 20 total offensive plays in the second half and just 32 yards of total offense. Finally, the UVa special teams produced points in the kickoff return game, improved its kickoff coverage and finally connected on a field goal.
