Women's Basketball Schedule

Last week, SabreMail featured the men's basketball schedule. This week, the women's schedule is in SabreMail. From the UVa Athletics Media Relations official release:

A 16-game regular-season home schedule and at least five televised games highlight the Virginia women's basketball team's 2010-11 schedule released Wednesday (Sept. 8) by the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Among the teams scheduled to visit UVa's John Paul Jones Arena during the 2010-11 season are ACC opponents Boston College, Duke, Florida State, Maryland, Miami, Virginia Tech and Wake Forest. The Cavaliers also host non-conference opponents Drexel, East Tennessee State, Holy Cross, Longwood, Mount St. Mary's, North Carolina A&T, Pennsylvania, Radford, Richmond and UMBC.

Additionally, John Paul Jones Arena was selected as one of 16 sites for the first and second rounds of the 2011 NCAA Championship and will host two games on Sunday, March 20 and one contest on Tuesday, March 22. Game times will be announced at a later date. Should the Virginia women's basketball team earn a berth to the tournament, the Cavaliers would automatically be slated to play in JPJA for the first two rounds.

"It's a very challenging schedule this year," Virginia head coach Debbie Ryan said. "And John Paul Jones Arena is a great place for the NCAA Championship because our fans are so great. It's a fan-friendly arena and it's going to be a tremendous thing for the community, the state and for women's basketball."

The Cavaliers' home games against Maryland (Jan. 21), Florida State (Feb. 7) and Boston College (Feb. 20) and their away contests at North Carolina (Jan. 28) and Virginia Tech (Feb. 27) will be televised by the ACC's Regional Sports Network (RSN).

After the season-opener at Hofstra (Nov. 12) and a road contest at Tennessee (Nov. 18), UVa's 2010-11 road schedule features the Paradise Jam in the U.S. Virgin Islands, where the Cavaliers will face Iowa State (Nov. 25), West Virginia (Nov. 26) and TCU (Nov. 27).

In the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, Virginia heads to Ohio State on Dec. 2.

The Cavaliers are scheduled to play ACC games at Clemson, Georgia Tech, Florida State, Maryland, North Carolina, NC State and Virginia Tech.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

There will be some news on the basketball recruiting front this week. Whether it's positive or negative remains to be seen.

Landon School (Bethesda, MD) head boys basketball coach Andy Luther said late last week that senior Darion Atkins will make an official visit to the University of Virginia this week. Coach Luther believes the visit will begin Monday.

Atkins, a 6-8, 210-pound power forward prospect, took an official visit to Notre Dame over the weekend. The Fighting Irish and the Cavaliers lead for the athletic prospect, a player Luther calls "extremely long and athletic. He has incredible timing as a shot-blocker. He has impressive vertical abilities and he gets back up off the floor really fast, which probably explains his gifts as a shot-blocker. He runs the floor very well. He's very active on the offensive glass. He has a good nose for the ball."

A decision from Atkins may come as soon as this week. Stay tuned to TheSabre EDGE for the latest on this situation later this week.

Virginia has secured some perimeter help in this class with commitments from Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA) guard Malcolm Brogdon and Merrill (WI) wing guard/forward Paul Jesperson.

Football recruiting ...

On Saturday, I stopped by St. Christopher's School (Richmond, VA) to see the Saints take on St. Stephen's and St. Agnes (Alexandria, VA) in what turned out to be a highly competitive contest on the gridiron. The game featured two of UVa's 2011 recruits - DE/TE Thompson Brown (St. Christopher's) and LB Darius Lee (SS/SA).

Brown, a 6-4, 225-pound prospect with tremendous athletic ability for his size, turned about a 10 to 15-yard pass into a 43-yard touchdown reception to start the scoring. St. Stephen's answered with a touchdown of its own before a safety gave St. Christopher's a 9-7 lead at the half. A third quarter touchdown - set up by a bobbling, circus catch by Lee - and a field goal gave St. Stephen's a 17-9 lead before St. Christopher's scored 18 unanswered points in the fourth for the 27-17 win.

Defensively, Brown finished with seven tackles and a forced fumble. Lee, who starts at safety and tight end, was in on a number of tackles throughout the day in addition to hauling in several passes on offense.

I'll have more from this game later in the week, so stay tuned to TheSabre.com for the full report.

Also coming up this week on the football recruiting front, I'll have the latest on Bayside (Virginia Beach, VA) cornerback Demetrious Nicholson, Newton (Covington, GA) linebacker D.J. Hill, and more.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

4-Star RB Firms Up Commitment To UVa
Image: Clifton RichardsonMike London's first big recruiting splash as University of Virginia head coach came in early March, when Clifton Richardson, one of the state's top 2011 class prospects, pledged to the Cavaliers. The news was tempered by Richardson declaring the commitment to be "soft," stating that he would continue to consider other programs. Following UVa's season opening win over the University of Richmond, however, the Menchville (Newport News, VA) product now says he is firmly in UVa's camp.

PF Darion Atkins Set To Visit Top Two
The University of Virginia is in the top two for Darion Atkins, a 6-8, 210-pound senior power forward out of Landon School in Bethesda, Maryland. At this point, this recruiting race appears to be an ACC/Big East battle with the Big East school, Notre Dame, set to host Atkins on an official visit this weekend.

Blog Banter: Moore Remembers Clemson Win

Shawn MooreWednesday marked the 20th anniversary of Virginia's first win against Clemson, ending a 29-game streak against the Tigers. On Sept. 8, 1990, No. 14 UVa topped No. 9 Clemson, 20-7. To this day, it's a game Hoo fans remember fondly. Read about it in the EDGE archives!

On a teleconference Wednesday, Moore remembered that the Cavaliers went into the game with a lot of confidence after crushing Kansas 59-10 a week earlier.

"What I remember about that game is that we had a tremendous amount of confidence coming off that first game at Kansas. We were playing with a lot of veteran leadership, guys that had played a lot of football, a lot of fifth-year seniors," Moore said. "I don't think anyone thought about the streak. The only thing we thought about was playing this Clemson team and trying to figure out how to get an ACC win so we could defend our ACC Championship."

VMDO Architects receives awards for design of UVa's baseball stadium
Official Release

The Virginia Society of the American Institute of Architects (VSAIA) has bestowed VMDO Architects of Charlottesville, VA (116 2nd St.) with an Honor Award this year for their well-received design of the University of Virginia's Davenport Baseball Stadium. The Central Virginia Chapter of the VSAIA has also acknowledged the local firm with a Merit Award for the Cavaliers new baseball facilities.

"We feel proud that our colleagues have chosen to recognize the quality of our work on the baseball stadium project," says lead VMDO architect Joe Celentano. "It is especially satisfying given the extremely compressed design and construction schedule and could not have been accomplished without a completely integrated team effort between the owner, architect, and contractor."

Davenport Field, now considered to be one of the best places to watch and play baseball in the Atlantic Coast Conference, was funded in part from $2 million in gifts from anonymous donors, which enabled the University of Virginia to move ahead with the baseball field's renovation and expansion.

VMDO's design included such amenities as a canopied grandstand with 1,600 seats to replace the existing metal-seat bleachers, and six skyboxes for lease by fans and corporate sponsors. New stadium lighting was also installed, as well as an on-site locker room and clubhouse, a press box, concession area, and a grass-filled seating area.

VMDO Architects was founded in 1976 and is the 2003 recipient of the T. David Fitz-Gibbon "Architecture Firm of the Year" Award from the Virginia Society of American Institute of Architects.

The Sunday Sampler - USC
Image: Joe TorchiaTwo games into the Mike London era at Virginia, it certainly seems like the tight ends are back to playing a critical role in the game plan. After all, Joe Torchia and Colter Phillips have each logged significant snaps so far in 2010 and they're contributing to both a rejuvenated running game and the receiving stats.

Cavaliers Fall Short At USC
In many ways, Virginia's 17-14 loss at Southern California on Saturday night is encouraging. In others, it's disappointing. But one thing is for certain as the Cavaliers head into a bye week with a 1-1 record: the road ahead, even in 2010, looks more promising than it did one year ago.

Phillips Coping With Tragedy
Image: Colter PhillipsFor Cavalier tight end Colter Phillips, this season is all about family and football. The sophomore from Darnestown, Md., comes from a tight-knit football family; all three of his brothers play football, and two of them also play at FBS schools. This year, the Virginia football family has rallied around Phillips and his immediate family after they suffered an unspeakable tragedy during the offseason.

Game Preview 2010: USC
Image: Coach Mike LondonLast Saturday's home victory over the Richmond Spiders did much to wipe away the sad memories of 2009's 3-9 campaign. The Cavaliers put together a solid offensive outing featuring an even balance between the running and passing games. There is still plenty of room for improvement, though; this week's game will be a greater test of how far Mike London's team has come, and how far the Hoos still have to go. Coach London is taking his team on the road to Southern California for what should be one of the most difficult challenges of the season. The goal is always to win, but improvement is still the name of the game for the Cavaliers.

This photo gallery features 151 images of the Cavaliers with everything from pregame activities to fans to former players. There are also great shots of current players like Marc Verica, Nick Jenkins, Dontrelle Inman, John-Kevin Dolce, and more!

Press Conference Notes 2010: USC
Image: Trey WomackWhen Virginia travels west to take on USC this week, it will mark the first time the football team has ever played a game in California. UVa coach Mike London wants to make sure the Cavaliers are prepared beyond the X's and O's for the coast-to-coast trip. The players have received tip sheets about things that can help with cross-country air travel and London has taken steps to learn about the potential issues.

10 Things I Learned 2010 ... Richmond
Image: LaRoy ReynoldsAfter Virginia's 34-14 win against Richmond on Saturday, there are about 2,651 storylines available to discuss. New schemes, new plays, new plays, new results, new enthusiasm ... there was a lot of "new" and that certainly was a good thing. For now, however, we will stick to 10 Things and hope that we have more "new" to discuss down the road.

Greg's Game Report: Richmond
Image: Offensive LineThree things really stood out clearly to me Saturday, starting with the raw enthusiasm of the Virginia players. Second, the offense shined - Bill Lazor called a solid game with timely play-action passing off a productive running attack while moving the pocket with bootlegs and rollouts to adjust to early Spider corner blitzes. Finally, this was a good win. A 21-point victory over the No. 6 team in the nation in the pre-season FCS poll does not necessarily scream "New Year's Day Bowl here we come," but it does offer hope.
