UVa The Perfect Fit For Moore

Paul Montana, last year's intern for TheSabre.com, is working at The Martinsville Bulletin in southern Virginia. Martinsville, of course, produced Shawn Moore, one of the greatest players ever to suit up for UVa's football program. Montana caught up with Moore, Virginia's new receivers coach, recently for an exclusive story with his hometown paper.

Check out this quote from the article and make sure to give the former Sabre intern's article a full read by clicking here:

"When I look at our installation on a day-to-day basis, I almost look at it from a quarterback's perspective, thinking about progression. So I share that with my receivers," Moore said. "I think they feel like they have a better grasp when they come off from practice each day, because they're looking at it from a quarterback's eyes.

"Every time I see what we're installing, I go, 'OK. Here's the progression, here's what we're going to do.' I don't think there was a better fit for me than working with the receivers, especially for my first college job."

Moore also shared some thoughts on the receivers in The Sabre's Hoo Preview article on the receivers - check that out here. Remember, the Sabre's annual "Hoo Preview" is taking an August-long look at the football team. The Sabre will have stories every week day through Friday, Aug. 27. The Hoo Preview includes exclusive position-by-position analysis, columns, features, and interviews about the Cavaliers. Make sure you have an EDGE subscription so you can follow the action. The Sabre's regular game week coverage begins on Monday, Aug. 30 for the Richmond game.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Basketball recruiting

UVa hosted Greater Atlanta Christian (Atlanta, GA) senior guard/forward Malcolm Brogdon on a visit this past weekend. Initial attempts to reach the 6-5, 205-pound prospect were unsuccessful, but stay tuned to the EDGE for more later this week.

Brogdon, a talented scorer that has turned in a strong spring and summer on the AAU circuit, is considering offers from Virginia, Butler, Clemson, Georgia, Harvard, Minnesota and Vanderbilt according to Georgia Stars AAU coach Christopher Richards. He averaged 20 points per game as a junior at GAC this past season and continued the stellar play for the Georgia Stars.

Football recruiting

When Diamonte Bailey entered Hermitage High School (Richmond, VA) in 2007, he considered himself more of a basketball player. Weeks before the start of his senior year, Bailey, a 6-3, 220-pound defensive end, has accepted a scholarship to play football at the University of Virginia.

Bailey is an important piece in what will be a talented Panthers squad, one that should contend for a Group AAA, Division 6 State Championship.

"Going into the ninth grade, I wasn't sure I'd played football. I decided to come out because a lot of my friends were playing. I came out and played quarterback. It didn't work out too well. I was moved down to the freshman team while my friends played on the JV. It bothered me and pushed me. My sophomore year I played defensive end on the JV and had something like 15 sacks. My junior year I had a breakout season and that got me to where I am now," said Bailey, who had 52 tackles including nine sacks in 2009.

Bailey discusses his commitment to Virginia, the development he has shown since last season, who sparked his interest in football, and more in an EDGE article so keep an eye out for that one.

Keeping on the commitment front, read the latest on H.D. Woodson (Washington, D.C.) tight end Darius Redman on the EDGE as well. The 6-4, 230-pound prospect discusses his future, including whether or not he'll enroll at UVa in January of 2011.

A pair of commitments will be in action this week. DT/OG David Dean and Green Run (Virginia Beach, VA) will take on Bayside (Va Beach) this Saturday. Bayside is led by top senior cornerback prospect Demetrious Nicholson. DL Vincent Croce and his Good Counsel (Olney, MD) teammates travel to Cincinnati (OH) to take on St. Xavier High School on Sunday at 3 p.m. The game will be televised on ESPN.

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Whitmire Attends UVa Practice
T.C. Williams (Alexandria, VA) star offensive tackle Jay Whitmire attended practice at the University of Virginia last Saturday. The visit wasn't quite what he initially planned, but the 6-7, 290-pound rising senior did get a closer look at the football program.

Preseason Report: Q&A With Adrian Gamble
Image: Adrian GambleVirginia's lone 2011 class wide receiver commit, Independence (Charlotte, N.C.) prospect Adrian Gamble, is the subject of the latest "Q&A." The 6-3 1/2, 186-pound standout answers questions about his upcoming senior season, his relationship with UVa coaches, the possibility of early enrollment and more.

Hill Recalls UVa Visit, Talks Future Plans
Over the course of last weekend, Newton (Covington, GA) linebacker prospect D.J. Hill toured the Grounds, the football facilities, saw a practice and met with head coach Mike London. The 6-1, 220-pound rising senior said he "had a real good feeling" about the overall experience.

Blog Banter: Ducks Coming To Charlottesville

Jontel EvansThe Oregonian’s John Hunt blogged Friday that the Oregon men’s basketball team will play Virginia on Dec. 17 at the John Paul Jones Arena. The full UVa schedule for Tony Bennett’s second season will not be released until late August or early September even though tickets are already on sale – read more here.

Still, as The Sabre first put together in this blog post, you can figure out much of the non-conference schedule from other published reports. Here it is again:

  • at Stanford (Nov. 18)
  • vs. Washington at The Maui Invitational (Nov. 22-24) – the second-round match-up will be with either Oklahoma or Kentucky; other teams in the field include Chaminade, UConn, Michigan State, and Wichita State
  • at Minnesota (Nov. 29) for the ACC-Big Ten Challenge
  • vs. Oregon (Dec. 17)
  • vs. Iowa State (Dec. 30)
  • vs. LSU (Jan. 2)

The Hoos have 17 regular-season home games, including nine non-conference opponents. Expect the remaining six opponents to be against teams away from the power conferences.

Issue No. 84 - April 25, 2003

Spring game a highlight for freshman Brooks

While there were quite a few impressive players at last Saturday's spring football festival, one in particular stood out above them all. Freshman linebacker Ahmad Brooks made his Cavalier debut and had the crowd gasping on just about play in which he was involved. Brooks showed his speed, power and instincts as he racked up tackle after tackle, including one hard hit on backup quarterback Anthony Martinez, deflecting his intended pass. Brooks certainly lived up to all of the hype that surrounded him when he was considered the nation's best defender coming out of high school.

Heisman Trophy quarterback Matt Schaub led the Hoos offensively and never seemed to miss a beat. In these types of contests, it's really hard to distinguish whether or not the offensive was really good, or the defense really bad. But, if the defense was indeed playing well, opposing teams had better start worrying about number seven this season.

Virginia put heavy emphasis on their running game throughout most of the day, and backs Marquis Weeks and Wali Lundy had stellar performances.

Even with the threat of rain, the fans turned out well for the festival. There were well over 6,000 in attendance, which was far better than in previous years when the games were played at Klockner Stadium and Albemarle High School.

In Case You Missed It ...

Sabre articles since the last SabreMail

Hoo Preview 2010: Special Teams
Image: Jimmy HowellThe Cavalier special teams unit saw a lot of action in 2009 with mixed results. There were elements of the special teams game that were the very models of consistency, while others struggled throughout the year to find a certain comfort level. 2010 will be a year of fierce competition for playing time on special teams, and a few key position battles are heating up as the summer draws to a close.

Hoo Preview 2010: Offensive Line
Image: Austin PasztorWhen it comes to preseason breakdowns, team predictions, and general discourse about the Virginia football team in 2010, no unit is more scrutinized than the offensive line. Maybe the linebackers, but even that is usually a distant second thought. How good will the Hoos be this year? The discussion begins and ends with the offensive line. And rightfully so.

Hoo Preview 2010: Cabbell Brings Experience
Image: B.J. CabbellLittle boys playing Pop Warner football all dream of being the guy who can make the big hit or score the big touchdown to win the game, but it's the big men up front, pushing and sweating it out play after play who make the difference. Playing in the trenches doesn't allow many opportunities for individual accolades, and senior offensive lineman B.J. Cabbell has never been one to seek attention. However, he does strive to set an example for the entire team through his work ethic and attitude.

Hoo Preview 2010: The Schedule
If you're looking for the same old boring schedule preview you're going to be disappointed. But if something a little different, a little zany fits your interest with just enough information to feed the need, you might find the 2010 schedule preview just up your alley. Music is such an integral part of lives, I thought I'd put the 2010 schedule to song - sort of.

Hoo Preview 2010: Running Backs
Image: Max MilienVirginia coach Mike London wants to run the football. Offensive coordinator Bill Lazor wants to run the football. The quarterbacks want to run the football. The receivers want to run the football. The offensive line definitely wants to run the football. And you can bet your bottom dollar that the running backs want to run the football.
