2010 Season Tickets Contest

University of Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Virginia head football coach Mike London has purchased 100 season tickets in section 117 at Scott Stadium. Coach London will give away these season tickets for free to fans as prizes awarded through an essay contest. The winners will be a part of Mike London's Fanatic Cavalier Club.

"Virginia fans have really embraced the coaches and student-athletes in the program during my first seven months here as head coach," London said. "The passionate support of our fans will make a difference at Scott Stadium this fall and I want to do my part to help that effort."

To enter the contest fans must submit an essay that answers these questions: what makes you the most loyal, passionate Virginia football fan and how do you show your Cavalier spirit? The submission must be 1,000 words or less. A picture of the fan in his or her best Virginia gear must be also submitted to support the essay. The submission deadline is Friday, August 6 at 5 p.m.

A committee, including Coach London, will judge the submissions and determine the winners. The contest winners will be announced on Friday, August 13. Each winner will receive up to four 2010 Virginia football season tickets and four 2010 official fan t-shirts by Nike. The number of season tickets awarded will be based upon the number of immediate family members in the winner's household. One grand prize winner will be chosen to receive a trip for two to Los Angeles for the Virginia football game at Southern California on Sept. 11.

Each winner must make a commitment to attend all seven home games and use each ticket in his or her allotment. Members of Mike London's Fanatic Cavalier Club are expected to be role models for other fans throughout the stadium in showing their support for the Virginia football team.

To enter the contest and for more information, fans may click here. Entries may also be submitted by mail to:

University of Virginia Sports Marketing and Promotions Office
Attention: Mike London Fanatic Cavalier Club Essay Contest
P.O. Box 400854

Season tickets awarded as prizes through the essay contest can neither be moved from this area nor returned to coincide with an existing season ticket purchase. Existing 2010 Virginia football season ticket holders are eligible to receive a credit towards the purchase of 2011 season tickets if they are chosen as a winner. Fans may only win season tickets as part of the club for one season.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

I'll be on vacation this week, but there certainly could be some action on the recruiting front. Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) offensive tackle Sam Marshall, a 6-8, 265-pound rising senior, could commit at anytime. He has narrowed his list to Duke, N.C. State and Virginia but has not yet picked one of the three. It wouldn't be a surprise to see him pick one this week.

Also, Point Pleasant (Borough, N.J.) tight end prospect Ryan Malleck hopes to commit by Friday at the latest. The 6-5, 235-pound prospect, an athletic tight end with 4.6-second speed in the 40, is considering offers from Central Florida, Connecticut, Maryland, N.C. State and Virginia with Connecticut, Maryland and UVa being the frontrunners. I think the decision will likely come down to the ACC schools.

I'll return with more coverage from this past weekend's one-day camp and analysis on UVa's class to date and where it may go with the remaining scholarships. In the meantime, have a great week everyone!

Chris Horne, our resident recruiting expert, provides updates throughout the week for Edge subscribers about UVa's commitments and recruiting targets in football and men's basketball. Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Q&A With LB Recruit Darius Lee
Image: Darius LeeOn July 2, UVa received a commitment from 6-1, 205-pound linebacker prospect Darius Lee. The St. Stephen's and St. Agnes School (Alexandria, VA) star pledged to head coach Mike London while on an unofficial visit to UVa, settling on the Cavaliers over offers from Duke and Kansas State and interest from Connecticut and UNC, among others. The standout rising senior took some time to discuss his college choice and more in this edition of "Q&A."

Watford Breaks Down Decision
Although West Virginia University offered as well, the race for Hampton (VA) quarterback David Watford ultimately came down to in-state rivals Virginia and Virginia Tech. On July 10, the Crabbers rising senior announced to a crowd at the Peninsula All-Star Football Camp that he "would play my college football at the University of Virginia."

UVa Continues To Push For Wisconsin G
Image: Paul JespersonBoston College, Iowa, Notre Dame and Oregon State have been added to the list of schools that have offered 6-7, 185-pound wing Paul Jesperson, who had previously been offered by schools including Arizona State, Butler, Minnesota, Northern Iowa, Northwestern and Virginia.

Groh Not Surprised By Albert's Rise

Image: Branden AlbertWhen Virginia junior Branden Albert declared for the NFL Draft in January, it wasn't too surprising. After all, at 6-7, 315 pounds, he had the physical build to be ready for professional football. He displayed the ability to pass block and get out in space as a pulling guard as a Cavalier. Plus, Albert had already shown the ability to handle both the guard and tackle position during the season.

In the weeks since the announcement, Albert's decision certainly has looked like a good one. He is now projected as a likely first round pick by most draft pundits. That's not too surprising to at least one person: UVa coach Al Groh.

"There are some underclassmen that everybody all can see it coming, that this player is probably not going to be back for his fourth year so there's a buzz around that player from the start. There are other players that make that decision at the end of their season so as a result, if we want to use this phrase, the establishment of their stock value is really starting from scratch at that point so it's going to rise. That was the case with Branden," Groh said Monday. "As teams do more study of him and become more aware of him, either through study of his tape or personally working him out or watching his workouts, his skills clearly show and the upside he has as a player is becoming very evident to teams. As a result, yes there seems to be increasing interest in him."

Todd McShay of ESPN and Scouts Inc. says Albert "could be the top interior offensive lineman selected in 2008 draft" while Eric Edholm, Pro Football Weekly Senior Editor, says he "could see him going as high as 15, but definitely first round."

UVa's Cup Climb Required Plan, Persistence
Image: UVa Soccer: 2009 National ChampionsA rain-soaked field and bitter cold day did nothing to diminish the enthusiasm for a collection of student-athletes as they experienced the elation of success. Months later on the opposite coast, more feelings of euphoria engulfed a group of champions on the sun-kissed waters of Lake Natoma. The NCAA Championship accomplishments of the men's soccer team and the women's rowing team highlighted a banner year for the University of Virginia Athletics Department. In addition to the two NCAA titles, UVa programs captured seven ACC Championships, the most of any league school this past year and the most ever for a school since the conference fully expanded to 12 teams. As a result, Virginia finished third in the Learfield Sports Directors' Cup, the highest finish in the 17-year history of the competition for the Cavaliers.

JHoo's Summer Reading 2010: Defensive Ends
Image: Zane ParrSpeed. It is the key to the defense that Mike London and Jim Reid want to put on the field, and if there are any two positions where you can see UVa's new emphasis on speed, it is at defensive end and outside linebacker. This week, we will take up the former and while there are a lot of unknowns when it comes to the new crop of 4-3 defensive ends, there are two knowns: they are a heck of a lot faster than the old crowd and they are not short on potential.
