Duo Named to National Team

Virginia Athletics Media Relations, Official Release

Virginia field hockey players Paige Selenski and Michelle Vittese have each been named to the United States National Team, USA Field Hockey announced recently. They are two of 24 players named to the squad following play at the U.S. National Championships last week in Virginia Beach, Va.

"It has been a goal for both Paige and Michelle to represent their country on the U.S. National Team," Virginia head coach Michele Madison said. "To finally get their names called, I don't think they will really understand what they have accomplished until the first time they step on the field wearing their jerseys and start getting international caps."

Selenski, a native of Shavertown, Pa., was a semifinalist for the Honda Award as a sophomore last season. She was a 2009 first team All-American and led the Cavaliers with 27 goals, the third-most in program history. Selenski was tabbed the NFHCA South Regional Player of the Year in addition to being named a first-team all-south region and All-ACC selection for the second consecutive year.

Vittese, who hails from Cherry Hill, N.J., joined Selenski on the All-ACC and All-South Region first team. She was named a third team All-American by the NFHCA as a sophomore in 2009 and contributed six goals and nine assists.

Both Selenski and Vittese have a wealth of international experience as past members of the U.S. Junior National Team.

"They are only going to get better after being tested at a higher level," Madison said. "They are ready and they need that to take the next step. They have been in the pipeline for a long time and now here they are with an opportunity. I am very proud of them."

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

Hampton (VA) quarterback David Watford announced on Saturday that he had committed to the University of Virginia, giving Mike London and company their 12th in-state commitment of the 2011 class. Virginia now has six commitments from the Tidewater region, including two from Hampton, where London attended Bethel High School.

Watford's commitment is significant on several fronts. First and foremost, he is a talented quarterback prospect. At 6'1”, 185 pounds, he has the tools to develop into a good college quarterback. There is no question that he brings an ability to create plays on the ground, but let's not diminish his potential as a passer. He has a good arm. He admits he is still developing in other areas such as reading defenses, but the potential is there to be a good passer.

The Crabber signal caller's decision is significant as well because it's another in-state commitment in London's first full class as UVa head coach. With an obvious emphasis on recruiting the state, London and company have to be pleased with the success they have had so far. Virginia may only have one recruit from my current in-state top 10, but it has recruited good in-state players including 10 from my top 40. Scoring all of the top, top guys may not be realistic given where Virginia's program has been in recent years, but what the staff has done so far in this class is certainly a step in the right direction as far as in-state recruiting.

Stay tuned for more on Watford's commitment, including quotes from the talented prospect on his decision.

This week, more in-state rising seniors could make their decisions. The watch is on with Cave Spring (Roanoke, VA) linebacker Michael Cole, Colonial Forge (Stafford, VA) tight end Eric Frohnapfel and Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) offensive tackle Sam Marshall. All three prospects have indicated they would like to decide soon, with Cole and Marshall highly likely to commit this month. Virginia is in the running with all three.

Outside of the state, New Jersey tight end prospect Ryan Malleck is likely to decide this week. The 6'5”, 235-pound rising senior, an athletic tight end prospect with sub-4.6 speed in the 40, is working toward a decision. At last check, Connecticut, Maryland and Virginia were the three favorites.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

Watford commits to Virginia
Image: David WatfordChalk up another in-state commitment for the Virginia football program. Rising senior quarterback David Watford announced today that he has committed to UVa, which scores its first Hampton High School (VA) signal caller since Marques Hagans. Coincidentally, Hagans is a cousin of Watford.

Promising OT Close To A Decision
Chancellor (Fredericksburg, VA) star Sam Marshall has seen his recruitment flourish throughout the spring and summer, accumulating scholarship offers from Duke, East Carolina, Louisville, Marshall, N.C. State, Virginia and Western Michigan. The 6-8, 265-pound offensive tackle prospect doesn't figure to be on the market much longer, though, as he plans to decide his college future as early as this week.

This Week In Recruiting

In case you missed it, the University of Virginia men's basketball team has picked up its first commitment of the 2010 class. 6-8, 220-pound power forward Will Regan pledged to head coach Tony Bennett and company last Sunday but kept the news to himself, his family, close friends and the Virginia staff until last Friday.

Regan, who attends Nichols School in Buffalo, New York, participated in the NBAPA Top 100 Camp and stayed around one day with his mother and father to tour the grounds and speak with the Virginia coaches.

"Everything was great," Regan told TheSabre.com last Friday night. "Virginia is a great school. It has the number one business school. They play in the best conference. They have the best weight training coach. I talked to an academic advisor and the weight training coach on Sunday. Everything going together just made it a great fit."

Named Buffalo News Player of the Year last season as a junior, Regan averaged 22 points and 13 rebounds per game in 2008/2009. A hard-working, smart player, Regan also has the ability to score inside and outside. He feels he'll be a good fit in Coach Bennett's system, one of the reasons why he went ahead and committed.

JHoo's Summer Reading 2010: Defensive Tackles
Image: John-Kevin DolceFor the last couple of years, I have referred to UVa's nose tackles as defensive tackles. Now, however, there is no need for me to stretch. Now, we have defensive tackles. And somewhat surprisingly, given that UVa is switching defenses and has to find 4-3 defensive tackles when none were recruited, I think the Hoos will have some pretty good defensive tackles.
