Blog Banter: A Workout Warrior

From The Good Ol Blog ...

Thompson Brown, the latest high school senior to commit to the University of Virginia, has no problem working hard in the weight room.

"His work ethic is exemplary," St. Christopher's head coach Michael Turner said. "He broke his wrist right before the season last year and we caught him sneaking into the weight room when he should've been resting (laughs)."

At 6-4, 225 pounds, Brown is a phenomenal athlete as well. At the Charlotte Under Armour Combine earlier this year, he posted a 4.59-second 40, a 4.29-second shuttle and a 32.5-inch vertical leap. After starting for the Saints as a freshman and sophomore, Brown was limited as a junior due to the broken wrist and a hamstring injury. When healthy, he starts at defensive end and running back.

Brown earned an offer after attending UVa's one-day camp. Turner believes that Virginia offered as a defensive end. He committed to the Cavaliers over offers from Boston College, Duke, Maryland and Ohio.

UVa now has 16 commitments in the 2011 class. Stay tuned for more on the EDGE.

This Week In Recruiting
By Chris Horne

UVa football is truly on a roll, scoring two more commitments this past week to bring its total to 16 for the 2011 class. Last Friday, UVa scored its most highly recruited prospect in the class to date in 6-0, 170-pound Damascus (MD) cornerback Brandon Phelps. The Cavaliers won out against some of the nation's best programs, including Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Penn State and Virginia Tech. Phelps, whose father, Gary, played football at Virginia in the '80s, committed following an unofficial visit.

With the addition of Phelps, UVa now has two excellent cornerback prospects in the fold for the class. DeMatha (Hyattsville, MD) prospect Jordan Lomax, a speedy corner, verbally committed in the spring.

Following his third one-day camp of the month, Virginia head coach Mike London extended an offer to 6-4, 225-pound defensive end prospect Thompson Brown. The St. Christopher's (Richmond, VA) has accepted the offer, choosing Virginia over offers from Boston College, Duke, and Maryland, among others. An excellent athlete, Brown posted a 4.59-second 40 and a 32.5-inch vertical leap at an Under Armour Combine this spring.

Virginia has also done an excellent job of recruiting defensive linemen in this class. In addition to Brown, Coach London and company have reeled in defensive ends Diamonte Bailey and Marco Jones, defensive end/defensive tackle Vincent Croce and defensive tackle David Dean.

Later on the EDGE, check out the latest on Cave Spring (Roanoke, VA) linebacker Michael Cole. The 6-2, 200-pound rising senior scored an offer from Penn State over the weekend and is now in decision mode, considering offers from the Nittany Lions as well as Connecticut, Duke, Maryland, Virginia and Virginia Tech. Look for a decision to come within the next few weeks.

Colonial Forge (Stafford, VA) tight end Eric Frohnapfel hopes to commit this summer as well. The 6-6, 210-pound rising senior is considering offers from Connecticut, Marshall, Virginia, West Virginia and others. His brother, Blake, attended Virginia's camp this past Saturday and is hoping UVa comes through with an offer. I'll have a full report on the brothers this week on the EDGE.

Decisions are coming fast and furious for the Cavaliers, who have scored eight of their 16 commitments in the month of June.

Sabre Edge recruiting updates from the past week ...

London's Message Resonates With Phelps
Brandon Phelps wanted to make a commitment before the start of his senior season, but by no means was he in any rush to decide his college future. By the time he left an unofficial visit at the University of Virginia, though, the Damascus (MD) star cornerback/wide receiver prospect would be the latest prospect to pledge to head coach Mike London.

UVa Currently On Top For Bird's Harris
Rising senior cornerback/wide receiver Anthony Harris will likely make a commitment before the start of L.C. Bird's (Chesterfield, VA) preseason practice, which begins on August 9. In fact, it wouldn't be a surprise if a decision comes sooner rather than later.

2012 PG Paige Scores UVa Offer
Image: Marcus Paige6-1, 160-pound point guard Marcus Paige averaged about 15 points per game as a sophomore this past season, but at last week's NBAPA Top 100 Camp he was asked to play the role of a traditional pass-first point guard. This was just fine with the rising junior standout, who has guided Linn-Mar (Marion, IA) to back to back second place finishes in the state.

Dowling Named to the Nagurski Trophy Watch List

UVa Athletics Media Relations Official Release

Virginia senior cornerback Ras-I Dowling has been named to the 2010 Bronko Nagurski Trophy Watch List, announced Monday by the Football Writers Association of America (FWAA). One of the more than 70 players on the list most likely will receive the trophy, which is awarded annually to the nation's best defensive player by the Football Writers Association of America and the Charlotte Touchdown Club. The trophy has been presented since 1993 and is awarded in memory of the legendary Nagurski, an All-America lineman at Minnesota in 1927-29 and a star for professional football's Chicago Bears in the 1930s.

Dowling is on the watch list for the second-straight season after earning his second-straight second team All-ACC nod, anchoring the ACC's No. 4 and the nation's No. 21 pass defense in 2009. The Chesapeake, Va., native finished the season ranked No. 6 in the ACC in passes defended (11) and No. 11 in interceptions (three). After recording a career-high nine tackles, including his first career sack, against Indiana, Dowling earned the ACC Defensive Back of the Week nod by the league. He also averaged 3.4 tackles per game and had two tackles for loss.

Dowling enters his final season at UVa with eight career interceptions and 145 total tackles. He has 36 career pass defenses.

Players may be added or deleted to the Bronko Nagurski Watch List during the season. Each week during the 2010 season, the FWAA will choose a Defensive Player of the Week. If that player is not on the Watch List, he automatically will be added. The FWAA and the Charlotte Touchdown Club will announce five finalists for the Bronko Nagurski Trophy on Nov. 18.

The annual Bronko Nagurski Trophy Banquet will be on Dec. 6 at the Westin Hotel in Charlotte, N.C. Besides the 2010 winner being announced, the banquet will also celebrate the winner of the Bronko Nagurski Legends Award, presented by CSX Intermodal. Defensive tackle Mike McCoy, a standout for Notre Dame, is being honored from the FWAA's 1969 All-America team.

Martinez likes the Hoos

Sometime in January of 2002, don't be surprised if highly touted quarterback recruit Anthony Martinez commits to the University of Virginia. UVa is a strong favorite with the Martinez family, and if the Hoos land a few blue chip recruits, it will make the decision much easier for Anthony.

"I like those guys down in the Chesapeake area," Martinez said. "Kai Parham, that linebacker - he's a player. Maurice Stovall, the wide receiver. Those guys can play ball. If they were to go to Virginia, it would be hard not to commit there, because those guys can play and I think they could bring a lot to that team."

Martinez is considered by many to be one of the top ten quarterbacks in the nation. This was evident when he performed well at the Nike Combine at Penn State last spring. Although ill with the stomach flu for most of the camp, Martinez still gave a strong showing - strong enough to get himself invited to the Elite 11 Quarterback Camp in California.
